Made it to Monday

Got the miles in... reluctantly on Friday, in the Sunshine on Saturday, and with determination on Sunday. And my lousy emoticon metal monster is doing "normal fluctuations" which I'm telling myself is at least partly related to daylight savings Spring forward messing with my routine. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Speaking of DST Spring Forward, I seem to be doing OK with it. I didn't have anything that couldn't be "adjusted" over the weekend, so I just went to bed earlier, got up when the alarm said, and went about my business. Only hiccup was the car's clock, that I didn't set ahead of time... so it lied to me about what time it was when I tripped over to the grocery store. No excitement here.

Today is an off day from mileage building... putting the bag in the car to swim after work. emoticon Now that I've said it, gotta do it, right?

I hate this time change. It made me miss my favorite online freecell tourney on Sunday, grr. I have enough trouble figuring out the different time zones for when it actually starts, but the clever programmer for the site has it now set up that it somehow shows the times of games for your own time zone. But I hadn't checked it of course becaue I wasn't expecting it to move. Yep, still in the dinosaur age..

I have to say, generally it takes me a few days to get adjusted to DST as well, but not so bad. Was tired on Sunday and went to bed a little earlier, so not so bad today.

    I don't recall having issues with time change last year, but I wasn't working then either. Hah. I couldn't fall asleep last night and I don't use the alarm to wake up ... I tossed and turned all night and when I peeked at the clock at 5:30 am it was too late to grab coffee and get to the gym. I've been a grouch all morning. Hmmmm...

Marching into the madness...

Yes, basketball fans, it is that time of year again! emoticon My siblings remember that basketball was my favorite spectator sport. My son would remember that it was MOM that patiently stayed at the playground with him until his kindergartner arms managed to make ONE basket while the sun set and it got dark.

I myself remember my own mom, shooting hoops with the neighborhood kids, showing us her Iowa State Girls' bench-warmer skills (underhand freethrows, anyone? They still do 'em!)

Anyway, if you're going to do 8 miles on a treadmill, it behooves you to have something to look at besides the walls, and for me, that's college basketball, today. Kentucky and Vanderbilt? Mixed, of course, with the fitness infomercials, because they really keep me pumping. Jillian Michaels was on for the first half hour of my stepping. Then basketball.

What's the point of this? I guess to find what will keep YOU moving. This is one of mine. Still love the thrill of a fast break, the breath-hold while you watch the arc of a jump-shot. Despite living in the Cornhusker state, where (American college) emoticon football is King... round-ball has always been my passion.

So for the next few weeks, my treadmill sessions will be to some amazing sights... the usual suspects and the Cinderella teams, the defensive and offensive efforts, the race against the clock... I shall march into the Madness with them... grinning all the way!

    Basketball was the only sport I participated in while at elementary school -loved it, for me it was all about wrestling the ball to get a jump ball lol -I was the center if you can believe it at only 5' 6". I did nothing in high school -the start of my couch potato days.
What ever gets your motor running -just do it! For me that is pounding music with a beat -the faster the song, the faster I go. I think I would be too distracted if I tried to watch TV. I especially don't know how people can read and workout on a machine...

    My in-laws are from Kentucky originally, and can hardly believe that anyone west of the Mississippi knows what basketball is. In their friendly bracket competition, it works best to choose the western teams, and then hope that they win.

And I'm always pleased when an underdog wins.

It does make for some great diversion--I hope it keeps you on the treadmill cheerfully!

Today I was just starting to get going on the treadmill and the phone rang. Didn't recognize the phone # so almost didn't answer it, but DH did. TURNED OUT TO BE MY SON! So we had a 2 min. conversation. He sounds good, but tired. Not unexpected. So, wanted to share that excitement with you.

    The only time I'm interested in college basketball is during the NCAA tournament. My two boys got me hooked and I do look forward to the games. I do enjoy watching the game -- probably because it's one of two (baseball being the other) sports that I actually understand the best. Enjoy your walks/runs while you watch the games!

A full Saturday

Today's activity included a gym session with the personal trainer: y'all remember the one I bought six sessions with to celebrate my birthday last November. This was the next to last session... the final one will come on April 14th.

This one was kind of fun, actually. It was mostly exercises with the ball, the Suisse Ball or Exercise ball we know and love. emoticon emoticon She had me do planks on the ball, squats a couple of different ways with the ball, lunges with the ball and a twist, reverse crunches, crunches, and a "ball toss" that kind of combined things. I made the mistake of thinking I could still do 10 pound bicep curls after a month's layoff... HAH! Had to reduce the reps. Sigh.

This afternoon my daughter in law came over for our weekly check in, and then, since the weather was soooo nice, I took son's car over to their place to leave it for the next few days. I walked the 4.38 miles home in the sunshine.

The rest of the day's plan? Early to bed... and remember what to do about the clock tonight! emoticon Because tomorrow is Sunday... and that means long walk day. Target: 8 miles. And the goal is to get it done early, since son comes home tomorrow and I don't want to be unreachable when he does.

Hey, got the "Dear Mom" postcard from DS yesterday. Of course, it was pre-printed and he signed it.

Told us:

1. He'd arrived safely (already knew that, thankfully!)
2. He'd receive his permanent unit tomorrow, Monday.
3. We'd eventually receive his APO address.
4. Emergency contact information (had that already, too.)
5. We'd get a graduation packet once that was closer.

So, that's that. Don't expect to be hearing from him for several weeks, but we'll take what we can get!

HUGS and have a wonderful walk, and visit with your DS.

    Sounds like a fantastic day! Love the ball personally, I do my crunches on it, and find it more comfortable to sit on then a chair.

No walking here, its turning to ice and sludge and I don't have rubber boots lol. Its amazing how much it is melting here.

Rest day

Yesterday after work I hopped on the treadmill for an hour... 4 miles being my target. I went a few minutes over, to an old episode of the Jack Lord version of Hawaii Five-O, and got in 4.25 miles.

Today is a planned rest day. I took my break walks at work, as is my usual "stress management plan", but I could tell it was time for a rest day. I don't even track those break walks on the Spark tracker any more... but one day I might again.

I ordered myself some new walking shoes. I can't remember if I mentioned here that I signed up for the ten miler the end of this month, but I did. Build that mileage. I'm going to be wearing those shoes out. That's what they are for, right?

Looking forward to the weekend. Saturday I meet with the trainer... I've already e-mailed her warning her I haven't done Strength training homework, while building walking miles. She e-mailed me back tips for what kind of exercises to do before/after the walking to help.

Sunday afternoon late... son will be arriving back in town... but I won't horn in on the kids' reunion. Daughter in law will pick him up at the airport, and I will see him later in the week.

Life is good. Spark on. emoticon

    Wow, can't wait until I am doing 15 min miles. The treadmill is still a good workout for me and my HR is going up to MAX. Not sure why. I am doing good to do 3.5 mph with hill intervals at 5.5 incline! I'm sure I'll get faster when more fat comes off. But wow, my hat is off to ya!

    I totally agree with you: them shoes are made for walking, lol...

I don't have access to the old version of 5-0, but the new one is a don't miss now. A bit hokey at times, but what the hey, it's a good action show with some nice eye candy, and the scenery can't be beat, to my mind.

    Good for you knowing when to rest! Walk breaks are fine throughout the day, as good as anything else!
Great idea to get new shoes so you can have them broken in before your race. You plan everything so well! Probably why you are an ace computer programmer!

Walking... and walking...

Some of you have been around long enough to remember that one of my training tricks to keep myself at it is "walking as transportation". The unseasonably warm weather that was forecast for yesterday put me in a mind to do just that.

In the morning, being up and at 'em early... I hike 2.55 miles to a bus stop. Then after work, I walked home. Observation in the morning: "It's lighter than it was the last time I did this..." Well, duh! The last time I did this was last April... after the daylight savings Spring forward. It WAS darker in the morning.

I left work promptly, exiting the building at 4:34 after a stop at "the necessary" (Asimov fans, anyone?).

Here's where I start:

It took 99 minutes to get home, and I snapped a few more along the way. Of significance - the uphill of the dam face, when I know I'm getting closer.

Once you climb that face, you are rewarded with this view:

As you might detect from the angle of light, I was racing sunset.

Anyway, the first walk home in this mileage building program is usually the quick one - when I'm staying totally in the environment, not wool-gathering, listening to tunes, or reading while walking (that one really slows me down, which *can* at times be a good thing).

Anyway, it was a great day, and of course, I slept well.

    I ran into a friend this morning who walks to and from work--about the same distance you're doing, I'd say. I'm going to think about doing this...maybe the bus one way, and walk home. I like that idea. I used to do that, and gave it up sometime. I trace my slow weight gain 20 years to when we moved and I quit walking to/from work.

Anyway--isn't the Capitol grand? I love its place in our skyline, and every time I walk around it, I see something new.

    This weekend is the switch to daylight savings time, so that should work out well for your future walking before and after work.

    Smart - I canīt really walk from work because it would take about five hours but maybwe I could park 30 minutes away and walk that distance... but then I need the car at work to go to interviews so I am sort of stuck with that car...

I am a Sci-Fi fan too, but haven't read any Asimov in ages. I actually met him and even got an autograph from him at a Star Trek Convention I attended in New York in the 1970's.
