From inside the Cave... Indy 500 day...

Sunday, May 26, 2013

Some days are just special on a person's calendar. Every one of us has that inner personal calendar. One of the stellar days on mine is the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I remember the cookouts after church, where several church families got together, picnicked in the park and all the fathers gathered around the car radio to listen to the great names of the day: A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Bobby Unser and others, announced as they led laps and won or lost that afternoon.

When I grew up and started programming computers for a living, one of my early cube-mates was a young man from Scranton, PA, who happened to have met the Andrettis... and who also happened to be a hobby race driver. So he's one who comes to mind this weekend as well.

So today... I will be walking the treadmill once again, with memories cherished and new ones being forged... ladies and gentlemen, Start your Engines!

    Indy 500 was a big day in our house growing up as well! I haven't watched it in years, but remember those days fondly. We never made it to the race, though my dad hit the time trials a few times because he knew a guy who worked for the track. We did, however, go to see the guys race in Milwaukee several times. I know many people don't understand the attraction, but there's nothing like being there. I remember one year we were having breakfast before race-day, and my mom's friend spilled scrambled eggs in her lap because she was gawking at Bobby Unser eating his breakfast! Good times :-)

Your memories of Memorial Day are evocative of many childhood memories.

    Great memories! I remember going to the parade. I live in a small town, so it wasn't very big, but it seemed amazing when I was little.

    I don't think I've listened to the Indy 500 since I moved out of my parents' house. If it were to play on the radio, I'm sure it would bring up memories of Dad gardening or washing the old 63 Rambler while the race played. He really enjoyed it, but it was always just noise to me as a kid. Now, it would be memories of Dad more than the race itself.

Just typing this out calls to mind that Dad was interested in Watkins Glen when he and Mom came here to visit, years ago. As an adult, I could grasp more of his description of car racing and how his interest formed than I did as a kid.

    I was telling DH that I miss the days of the whole family going camping. By the time Kel got up big enough to remember, every one started going their separate ways and the camping days were no more with the whole family. I feel she missed so much.

Hope your good memories brings lots of joy today. emoticon

    What good memories!

Enjoy the Indy! Car racing is one of the few sports I've never gotten into much, but I do respect the skill of the drivers and the excitement of the race. I have many friends who will be glued to it, though nowadays it'll be via the TV or Internet rather than the radio of yesteryear.

Opportunity day 2

Saturday, May 25, 2013

I had arrived home after my walk, showered and slept very well. Got up Friday morning, checking the clouds outside and saw it looked to be a fine day... so, biked in to work, with the thought at the back of my mind to "be flexible", and allow for a plan B.

Halfway through the day I was feeling kind of yuck... and hoped I'd be able to bike wherever I needed to (car shop or home). I persevered, got through my work day, and they called to say the car was done. So in the end plan B was not needed, the weather was still fine in the afternoon. It was 71 degrees, sunny and windy. A twinge warm for the bike ride 8 miles out to where the car dealership sits on the edge of town, but not beastly. The head and cross winds were the challenging bit.

Now let me say one thing about this city: we believe in recreational trails. There are miles and miles of 'em, and they are like having our own sheltered commuter highways... only without the angry drivers. They can be crowded at times, but not as crowded as I've seen the streets get at "rush 15 minutes". As I rode, I encounted some strolling dog-walkers, some other bikers, and some families just out enjoying the day. I was riding with a deadline: get there before they close at 6 p.m.

I knew that the bike trail ended a half mile to a mile before getting to the dealership, and I'm not that familiar with the residential streets in that particular neighborhood. I had looked at a map in advance and had a plan in my head. I ride defensively, and am not uncomfy on the broad suburban streets. Still, watch out for those massive SUV's!

But there were no hitches... might have taken one turn differently (and if I ever do this again, I'll try that other turn). I located my little Fit in the lot, and loaded the bike into the back before going inside to "settle up".

Oh, my heavens... nasty bill. BUT, the A/C now works as it should, and I enjoyed it all the way home. And felt good because I'd just biked and had a car that carries the bike inside with no extreme modification... flop down the seats, lift Brenda in and drive on. Love it. It's why I picked this vehicle.

This morning I was supposed to go biking with the "biker babes", but woke to

the sounds of thunder emoticon and falling rain. emoticon Between that and my sinus allergies that are starting to act up... opted not to do that. I'm having my steel cut oats and sipping my mug and sparking... and contemplating a swim in a bit... emoticon haven't had one yet this week.

LIFE is good... three day weekend stretches in front of me... thinking it will be a "cave" weekend... to recharge the introvert batteries. Spark on! emoticon

Coiled spring, meet opportunity!

Friday, May 24, 2013

I mentioned yesterday that I was feeling a bit of a coiled spring. I also mentioned that yesterday might turn into one of those days when the planned exercise didn't line up with circumstance. The reason for that potential bump was that I had the car in to the shop for a preventative recall (software upgrade)... and one never quite knows how those things will go.

While I had it there, I asked them to look at the A/C. It's not been the same since my trip to Florida last November, and in fact I noticed it on Thanksgiving day, when I drove in bright sunshine from Arkansas home... it just wasn't behaving properly. Of course, Winter in Nebraska one doesn't need A/C... so I ignored it until last week when Summer suddenly appeared, and it still wasn't doing its thing.

Of course, they found something... seems on that trip I must have encountered a rock. It damaged the compressor. $$$ Ouch. BUT, since they didn't have the part on hand, it gave me the chance to let them keep the car overnight... and WALK HOME. Now for me, that walk home varies depending on route, and I took one that is mostly the shortest (did take one minor detour in a park on the way). 6.3 mile afternoon walk. My current background shot is of the lake I run around from home in about a 4 mile loop (or more... I can add to that basic 4). You get this view as you get to the top of the dam face, coming up it from the west. What a reward!

Anyway, it was a great chance to let the coiled spring unravel a bit. Today's plan: bike to work and to pick up the car after. We'll see if THAT turns into a plan B... the weather can always intervene.

LIFE is good. Spark on! emoticon emoticon emoticon

    It's great when exercise can be worked into dealing with what life throws at you! Walking home and biking to work the next day is the kind of solution that makes a lot of sense to me.

And the car a/c . . . yeah. I once bought a used car in the fall, and found out the following summer than the a/c didn't work. Yes, fixing it cost; but I got it fixed.

Balancing week

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Not every day has to be UBER active to be fully lived. But the balance must be there. Balance is not always balance in a given day. It might be balance over the week.

This morning I'm feeling a bit of the coiled spring... Monday was a scheduled rest day. Missed working out beyond the walking breaks on Tuesday and again on Wednesday because there were "life" things that needed doing, and it got squeezed out. Today threatens to be the same. But... there's this lovely Holiday weekend coming up, and I have my mind set on three days of nice activity... we shall see. And the coiled spring feeling usually turns into a GREAT next workout.

Whatever happens with "the plan" versus "the actual", I remind myself... I am LIVING my life, not wishing it away.

On to today's pep talk:
* Drink your water
* Eat what's in the bag
* The cookies at the coffee kiosk won't make it all better. Really.
* Work is NOT the entire world (even though you know you love what you are doing)... remember to go to recess!
* Stretch, mentally and physically... and hold your head high.
* YOU are worth it!

Spark a GREAT Thursday, my friends, for LIFE is good. Namaste. emoticon

Plan B - the anti-perfectionist plan

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

I notice KALIGIRL called me out on yesterday's pep talk about keeping a promise to myself. I had gone away from that during a particularly tough patch, and moved to a more realistic: make the best decision you can. And she's right!

And particularly timely reminder, too, as this week looks like one of those "best decision" weeks. Last week the training plan lined up nicely. This week, not so much. Monday was fine, it was a planned rest day.

Tuesday said "bike" on the training plan, and I had already adjusted it to "swim before work". HOWEVER, I forget just what it was that kept me up later than usual Monday evening, and when I got up Tuesday, I determined I needed the extra sleep, and snoozed instead of going to swim. I couldn't swim AFTER work because I had an appointment call I needed to get home for.

Then a friend dropped off Uma Vertigo (remember my mountain bike?) that had been "living" at her house since last Fall. Then the neighbor and his son dropped over... this is the neighborhood youngster who is looking to mow my grass this summer (at a lesser rate than the pros I have currently hired and was considering firing in favor of a budget boon of doing it myself...) Well, I really don't care to mow that much, and so I'm going to boost the youth economy by hiring this 14 year old this Summer.

Anyway, long and little of it is that I ended up with an extra rest day. So... today's pep talk goes back to:

* Progress, not perfection.
* The most important decision is the one in front of you NOW.
* Just do the best you can in the moment.

* Drink your water
* Today, packed with meetings, and no time between: find a way to squeeze some recess in!

* Eat what's in the bag, that's why you packed it.
* REWARD yourself with something active after work... you deserve it!

That's it, Sparklers! TODAY is our day to LIVE in the moment. We cannot change things that have happened, good or bad. But we can influence someone's day for good with a word of encouragement or a smile! Spark on! emoticon
