My holiday indulgence

Thursday, July 04, 2013

I slept in, then simmered the steel cut oats and contemplated just what form of active I wanted to be today. I opted for the long and slow run-walk intervals. The graph above is what runkeeper had to say about the pacing and elevation.

It was sunny, not horribly HOT yet... I ran mostly bike trails, and enjoyed seeing others out biking, walking alone or with others and pets, or jogging like me. I went about as far as I wanted, ten miles was my goal. I will not let the OT steal my happy active days... there are things that have to give, but being fit and active is not one of them!

In a couple of hours I will be putting together my healthy Greek Salad to take to my niece's 4th of July gathering. It's a BYOF (bring your own fireworks) event... but I don't know if I'll take any. Kids will have taken care of that. Since I usually hit the sack between 8 and 9 p.m., this will be a challenge to my system.

So, today's pep talk, for holiday gatherings:

1. Focus on the people, they are what you're there for!
2. Make the best decisions you can about the food... and don't sweat it. Remember: portion control, and savor every bite!
3. Drink your water!
4. Make memories... that's what it's really all about.

LIFE is good. Spark on! emoticon emoticon And Happy Birthday, USA!

Today I'm staying home instead of going to the fireworks display, because it seems that a late night plus the necessary walking between the car and the display would be unwise. Under the circumstances, I really miss the small family gatherings with light your own fireworks.

Self-honesty: yes, I need a pep talk... every... day

Wednesday, July 03, 2013

What turns it around? That moment when you go from "I don' wanna" to "I decided I am gonna"?

Usually it's reading, seeing, or writing something that reminds you what you really, really want.

And what do I really, really want? To feel physically good, and be able to do what needs doing and what I choose to do... for as long as God grants me the grace to do so. And today that means going to work and doing my job. To be able to do my job, I need to be well rested and mentally alert.

What makes me well rested and mentally alert?

1. Enough sleep: remember to go to bed on time.
2. Drinking my fluids - having a dehydration headache will NOT keep me alert or focused.
3. Eating nutritious foods in appropriate amounts spread across the day.
4. Getting up and being active periodically, to clear the mind and sequence priorities.

Rinse and repeat! Oh, and
5. Do something for fun, both active (take a walk, swim, bike)... and restful (reading a great book).

LIFE is good. Live it fully. Spark on! emoticon

Four great reminders - and the having fun part is absolutely key too!!

I kind of just take it granted that a lot of the time (shamefully) I don't wanna. But I'm gonna anyhow . . . because as you and MOBY say -- then you wanna. It kicks in (kicks me in the butt actually . .. ).

Hmm. I usually can't identify the catalyst that turns it from "I don' wanna" to "I'm gonna." Sometimes I can't even identify the moment when it takes the turn.

But I know that when I make that turn, eventually motivation will follow. I usually can't identify the catalyst for the return of motivation, but I frequently can identify the moment when it returns. That moment tends to be while I'm out exercising, which requires that it turned from "I don' wanna" to "I'm gonna" first.

Looking forward to seeing you again. I may have to make a trip to Lincoln and we could do lunch!

Quick pep talk - short on time again

Tuesday, July 02, 2013

* Eat what's in the bag!
* Drink your water!
* Don't get so engrossed in your work that you forget to go to recess! Recess helps the mind, not just the body!
* Stretch and breathe, thoughout the day.

* And don't forget your coach is calling, take the cell phone and the headset...

Got it?

Got it!

Life's still GOOD, whatever else swirls about. Spark on! emoticon

Leavin' for the work day...

Monday, July 01, 2013

sung to the tune of "Leavin' on a Jet plane"...

The lunch bag is packed, I'm ready to go...
The car is waiting in the garage...
I hate to move the cat off of my laaaaap.

But the clock is ticking, in the morn,
Don't want to have to toot the horn,
And have to make it there to do the time.

So stay here and guard the house
Don't attack the computer mouse
Purr and nap and have a lovely ti-ii-iime.

Cause I'm leavin' for the work day
Don't know if it's all worth the pay
Ah, cat, you ought to know.

LOL... this is what happens when a tune gets stuck in one's head...

emoticon emoticon

Anyway, it's Monday!

Eat what's in the bag!
Drink your water!
Remember to go to recess!
Breathe, Barb, Breathe.

And remember... you're the tool. Not the Maker.

Have a Sparkly Day, all! emoticon

Conserving energy - physical, mental, emotional

Sunday, June 30, 2013

I put myself back to bed after the pill at 4 :20 this morning, sleeping 'til about 5:45. But a little extra sleep is only PART of "rest".

There is the need to mentally "stand down" from high alert. To release oneself from worries. That's where prayer and meditation come in. Focus on the breathing, connect with a power greater than oneself. Because after all, I'm not ALONE... if I am a tool of my maker, I am not the in control, in charge mind... it's not my job to "will" it done... just do the footwork.

So, today, I'm letting some of all of that go... in preference to just doing, living, breathing. Every decision today: is in the direction of that "rest"... standing down... storing up energy for the week ahead, and the weeks following that.
