As promised, I took Brenda Starr Trek out for a shake-down spin, having successfully re-installed the repaired tire, and reattached the brake cable. This was the front wheel, so it should be the easy one... you know, with the click-it quick release and all that. Yeah, mechanical wimp here.
Being me, I opted to start out on the same side of town as the bike shop. Just in case. But I left the house so much earlier than the bike shop opens that it would not have made much difference.
Still, things went smoothly, and by the time I got to the turn off for the bike shop, I had pretty much made up my mind what kind of trip it would be: a 20 miler, at least. I was going to explore the connections between the bike trails and see if I could get all the way to my son's house. I wanted to see how much street travel might be involved in such a ride, and how awkward the transition between the trails that don't directly connect.
Turns out I was wise to allow myself a little leeway to get lost, because I explored a couple of nooks and crannies. But I did make it all the way to my son's house, with the odometer saying 12.5 miles when I cruised by. No, I did not ring the doorbell... I'm not that kind of a mother-in-law! It was too early for the kids to be receiving.
I just rode on by a bit, then turned around and explored my way home. Total miles on the day, about 23.5. Then I quick changed into running shorts and did a brief mile and a quarter of walk/jog... for my second brick of the season.
Yes, I may not have as stringent a training plan for my upcoming triathlon, and I may be doing it "just to finish" and "as a workout, not a race"... but I'm at least making sure I'm still fit enough to go the distance, as time allows.

Plan A for Friday was to commute via bicycle for my half day plus and hour OT. However, y'all know that warning they put on the walls of your bicycle tires? The one that says "do not overinflate"?
Well... I... kinda sorta... tested that yesterday morning. One boom too far. One spooked, embarrassed old lady here.
So... Plan B... I would drive it over to the bike shop, get them to fix it, and still have time for the bike commute. And if worse came to worse and they had to keep it because they were too busy to fit it in right away? I could walk to work in the time I had, from the bike shop, walk back to pick up the bike after.
Only I got to the bike shop to discover it wasn't open yet. Its summer hours have it opening at 10 a.m.! Which is late for an early bird like me.
So, out comes plan C... I know why the bike is my least favorite leg of the triathlon, it is my fear of equipment failure. If I understood more of the mechanics, maybe I wouldn't be so nervous about it. I decided I would go home and try popping the wheel off and see if I might consider, have the right tools to replace the tube myself.
I got as far as getting the wheel off and reading the instruction manual for replacing a tube before my resolve poohed out. I'm scared of breaking it. So... plan D... walk to the bike shop, drop off the tire, walk to work, then walk home after? Buzzzzz... thank you for playing... the clock is ticking.
In the end, I drove to work, dropping the wheel off on the way, picked up the wheel on the way home, and figured out how to put it back on the bike. The real victory was getting the brake cable reconnected. The test will be this morning when I take it for a shake down spin.
Slowly, people, slowly... the old lady learns slowly. But she *does* learn.
Oh, and I almost forgot to share some great news: Kelsey is OFF the heart-lung machine! Off the rvad, too. Still on a ventilator, still with tubes for drainage. But this is huge progress to be off those machines. It's been a month today since she first started having symptoms of what they have now called the hhv6 virus. I'm incredibly grateful, and still praying for continued recovery.

I made my son and his cousin (our hostess) pose for a cousins shot so I can send it to his dad. Figured I'd share it with my buds, too. This is the little girl who wanted so bad to hold the baby when he was first born and she was four... and being the nervous new mom, I was so scared she would drop him!
Her brother's daughter came up to me about half way through the gathering and said she thought my son was coming, and I said, he's right here... she hadn't recognized him! Of course in her defense, the last time she'd seen him was all dressed up in a suit and still in his military haircut. He teased her that he would not have known her either, as she's grown about two feet since his memories of her.
The weather was cooperative, there were plenty of little kids and big kids, found another Spark person there (don't know her Spark name, she's of that younger generation, and logs her fitness minutes here). My niece introduced her telling me she Sparks and has done Insanity, which made me think of MJREIMERS, of course, who has also done that really challenging program. Automatically impressed.
This friend had brought along another friend who had... get this... had been in some of the same events as me in the past year... the Color Run in Omaha, and the mud run I blogged about last year, too.
In short, a traditional 4th of July cookout, and I bailed early because I really was starting to feel the eyelids get heavy by 8:30 or so. I was in bed while things were still popping and booming outside... which pretty much has become tradition for me. I don't fight my inner early bird much anymore. One of the perks of being "mature".

Today I took a half day of vacation, I've had it scheduled for a while. The morning half. Which is also tradition for me: police the yard, process the memories, and then go to work.
The mini-pep talk for today:
1. Don't get ahead of yourself. You have time to pick up a few grocery items and pack before biking to work.
2. Drink your water.
3. Savor the day, tie up loose ends, and remember YOU are worth nurturing!

I slept in, then simmered the steel cut oats and contemplated just what form of active I wanted to be today. I opted for the long and slow run-walk intervals. The graph above is what runkeeper had to say about the pacing and elevation.
It was sunny, not horribly HOT yet... I ran mostly bike trails, and enjoyed seeing others out biking, walking alone or with others and pets, or jogging like me. I went about as far as I wanted, ten miles was my goal. I will not let the OT steal my happy active days... there are things that have to give, but being fit and active is not one of them!
In a couple of hours I will be putting together my healthy Greek Salad to take to my niece's 4th of July gathering. It's a BYOF (bring your own fireworks) event... but I don't know if I'll take any. Kids will have taken care of that. Since I usually hit the sack between 8 and 9 p.m., this will be a challenge to my system.
So, today's pep talk, for holiday gatherings:
1. Focus on the people, they are what you're there for!
2. Make the best decisions you can about the food... and don't sweat it. Remember: portion control, and savor every bite!
3. Drink your water!
4. Make memories... that's what it's really all about.

What turns it around? That moment when you go from "I don' wanna" to "I decided I am gonna"?
Usually it's reading, seeing, or writing something that reminds you what you really, really want.
And what do I really, really want? To feel physically good, and be able to do what needs doing and what I choose to do... for as long as God grants me the grace to do so. And today that means going to work and doing my job. To be able to do my job, I need to be well rested and mentally alert.
What makes me well rested and mentally alert?
1. Enough sleep: remember to go to bed on time.
2. Drinking my fluids - having a dehydration headache will NOT keep me alert or focused.
3. Eating nutritious foods in appropriate amounts spread across the day.
4. Getting up and being active periodically, to clear the mind and sequence priorities.
Rinse and repeat! Oh, and
5. Do something for fun, both active (take a walk, swim, bike)... and restful (reading a great book).
LIFE is good. Live it fully. Spark on!
