Channeling the 'rents

Monday, August 12, 2013

Yesterday during my finish line volunteer gig, I found myself channeling my mom. The instructions for finish line volunteers said what was required was lots of enthusiasm in congratulating the athletes as they arrived off the course. And there was a great announcer (named Shawn or Sean, depending on how he spells it)... rocking some terrific music, including at one point Queen's "We will Rock You!"

So I found myself dancing and exchanging moves with him throughout that number. Later I requested that he play "We are Young" by Fun... and he made a deal of it being requested by someone who was NOT a kid. He chose to play it when a special runner was crossing the finish line, someone he knew. So cool.

The athletes (I should not say runners, as they swam, then biked before the run part, of course) finished some totally spent, some with bounce remaining. Family members/supporters were allowed to run through the chute with them if they chose. One guy carried his dog across, several runners (moms and dads alike) were accompanied by their kids. One enthusiastic young woman had the energy left to do a cartwheel! And one fella dropped to his knees to kiss the ground.

I did not mention this in yesterday's entry, but it started to rain partway through the swim leg, and continued into making it a very dangerous bike leg... the word I heard most at the finish from the lips of the participants was that the bike leg was "brutal".

I was so proud of every single finisher. This volunteer gig was joyous, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

This morning, I channeled Dad... up at 3:30, on the road before 5 a.m. This after telling Robert and Katherine that I would sleep in until "at least 6". HA! Nope, I am my father's daughter.

Anyway, I'm holding back to let Robert tell his OWN race day stories, but that was mine. I'm now still a bit East of Des Moines and taking a break from the highway to have my "eat what's in the bag" lunch. Yes, I packed the bag for the road trip, out, back and while there. Now I need to pack up, take a leg-stretcher and get back on the road. There's another 3 1/2 hours on the road to home!

Spark a great day, friends! emoticon

He did it.

Sunday, August 11, 2013

You knew he would, and so did I.

Robert (ON2VICTORY) crossed the finish line about half an hour ago... a little longer. And no doubt he'll tell the tale himself, in outstanding fashion... but in case you were holding your breath... I *did* get to hang a finisher's medal on his neck. Can I get a huge woo-hoo?

Now trot on over to HIS Sparkpage and tell him what a Rockstar he is! emoticon emoticon

This one's brief

Saturday, August 10, 2013

I'm between stops... internet access from my motel is non-existent. However, I'm at a friendly McDonald's (no, I'm NOT pigging out, but they have some pretty decent coffee, premium roast)... AND their internet access seems to work.

I HAVE been in contact with ON2VICTORY, and in fact, he and his wife and daughters hosted me to watermelon and rotisserie chicken last night. I went for a lovely walk this morning at sunrise in Wisconsin, and saw the lake for the swim portion of this TRI during a practice swim this morning. Lovely, sheltered lake... quite a nice venue if I decide to make this event next year's destination for an Olympic TRI.

I left Prisoner on his own with plenty of food and water and will be back to see him Monday afternoon/evening if all goes as planned. He came back inside just in time for me to leave.

AND I'm volunteering! I will get to hand out finisher's medals between noon and four p.m. tomorrow, and with any luck, I'll get to hang Robert's medal around his neck! Doesn't get much better. Now I have to head out... there's a professional Q&A at the expo in about half an hour & need to get my coffee.

Spark a great weekend friends... this one's shaping up nicely on this end.

Miscellaneous

Thursday, August 08, 2013

Yesterday morning I felt drained of words, and did not post a blog. This is unusual for me, and may indicate one of those periods of "transition", when the next blog "series" or "pattern" hasn't quite developed in the brain yet. So in the meantime, this is filler! And miscellaneous stuff in life.

First, an update on Kelsey. I hadn't seen as many as when we were on vigil day to day... since she's been in rehab and doing as well as she has, I had not posted as frequently. Yesterday, Jen posted on my Spark page here that she's been back to the cardiologist and got the outstanding news that her heart, after ALL THAT... is now recovered, back to NORMAL! Woo-hoo! Still to be heard from, the virologist types to hear the status of the virus that started all this mess back in June. I'm ever so grateful for this, and offer this snap (snagged from her mom's FB) of her little girl visiting her at the rehabilitation facility where she's making great strides in recovering.

Second... what can I say about the Fort Hood trial continuing mess? Zipping my lips and continuing to pray.

Third... I managed to leave work with a clear conscience, everything delegated as it can get, and am "letting go of it all" for a whole week. I don't go back 'til next Wednesday. As is my habit in such times, I allowed myself a prep day on the front, and a recovery day on the back of my plan to drive up and cheer ON2VICTORY across the finishline of his Half Iron distance triathlon this coming Sunday.

You have to admire the Spark people who take on life and tackle it full bore. ON2VICTORY is one of many. I regularly remind the folks where I work that "these people exist... and I've met them". Fellow Sparklers, you have no idea how far the ripples go... encourage a fellow human being today. You'll be glad you did.

My prep day includes four loads of laundry and trips to the grocery store to pack all the healthy stuff (and bottled water) for my road trip. You'd better believe Brenda Starr Trek is going into the back of the car, and even my tri suit and running shoes... I'm going to take some time to explore the venue, even though I'm not a competitor. Who knows? There *is* a next year on the calendar, right?

For now, they are going to keep Kelsey on the anti-viral medications and do blood work every 2 weeks. Ivy went to help with Occupational Therapy this morning, and Kelsey got to change her diaper and clothes and also made some Easy Mac for her. She also pushed the stroller. Right now, plans are for her to discharge on Wednesday and do Outpatient Cardiac Rehab. Right now, it is a matter of regaining strength and endurance as she tires quickly.

About 12 years ago, I went on an adventure to Las Vegas to meet an online friend from a sewing group. We have remained friends all these years, even through periods of minimal contact. Our online friends are real, and they mean a lot to us in their support and encouragement.

Prayers for peaceful hearts in challenging situations

Tuesday, August 06, 2013

This morning I had my meditation first thing, before I even started the routine of dressing and packing the healthy eats bag. It was wonderful, refreshing, and peaceful to take this time to clear all the trash away and allow the soul to breathe.

A little later, bag packed, ready for the work day, and steel cut oats a-simmer, I checked my FB feed, and found an amazing post by one of the wounded from Fort Hood, asking for prayers. He will have to take the stand sometime during the course of this trial, and be faced by the man who shot him. The defendant, in case anyone missed it, has been given permission to act as his own counsel, which allows him to directly question the witnesses.

What my friend posted this morning, in part, was this:

"Are we strong enough to defeat hate? Or has time turned fear, discontent, malice, and hate I too (sic, I think "into" was intended) something far greater than that of just a simple word, feeling, or emotion. Preparing for the hardest thing in their lives to do my ft hood family prepares to testify. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers, along with my family and myself. Pray that hate or that thing that has grown to something more dissolves and we find guidance or resolution. "

So deep and truthful, and humble... please add your prayers to mine for the comfort and healing, the courage and ability, for these men and women who have waited nearly four years for the trial to begin.

Thank you, and may your hearts know peace, as well.

So once again, soldiers are required to be brave and honorable after already being wounded serving their country. It would be hard not to hate the person responsible and want to wring his neck the moment he is seen. But obviously, they will rise above it. Show the terrorist their spirit is not broken and never will be.
Four years is an outrageous length of time for a trial to be started. I feel for everyone having to wait so very long for justice. Though I don't think there is any punishment available that is fitting for that outrage. May they feel the peace, calm and comforting warmth from their guiding spirit to stand tall and proud as they face this test.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention..
Hopefully, your meditation will serve as a calming influence to get through your hectic day..
