Getting Outside

Tuesday, October 08, 2013

Loved this Biggest Loser Dazzling Diamonds challenge to get outside. So simple and easy just to get outside at least 5 minutes per day! But it made me conscious to make sure I got outside each day. I am so glad because the weather in Michigan in fall is just beautiful. The weather has been warmer than usual, although finally starting to cool off some. Most days have been sunny, although there were a few rainy days this week. But even in the drizzle, it was nice to be outside and smell the outdoors. One of the things that is nice about being outside is that you awaken all your senses. Obviously there is so much to see and observe. But the sense of hearing is a big part of being outside, as the sounds are so different from the sounds of indoors. You hear the wind or breeze, the bird songs, the leaves rustling, the sounds of animals scurrying through the woods, and insects chirping. I love the fresh smell of the outdoors, the smell of the pines.
Finally, being outside is a chance to just enjoy the environment and be away from the normal daily cares. I think I may adopt this practice every day, just to make sure I get outside every day!

It's all too easy to get cooped up in your home. Getting outside is good for you. I was feeling the same way. I now have an alternative reason to get outside. I've got chickens now and a duck. I have to go outside at least twice everyday to get them in and out of their coop. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I love to get outside every day. I walk all year long, even in the snow and just revives my soul. Some days it might be a push for me to get out the door, but I am always so glad to have done it when I get back home. I agree with you that this is a wonderful time to be outside and enjoy the great outdoors!

Thanks for all the great comments! Lilydog11, I live in the woods, so all I have to do to get out in the forest is step outside! I see deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, fox, coyote, skunk and many birds, bluejays, cardinals, crows, hummingbirds, squirrels, chipmonks, turtles, frogs, snakes all without leaving our property! I do often go over to a nearby path through a nearby park to have a better place to walk, as I live on a narrow dirt road that is a bit dangerous to walk on (you'd be surprised at the cars driving 50 mph on this type of road). DR1939, I do like the idea of taking a cup of coffee outside to my deck in the winter. Winter conditions are very snowy, icy and cold here, so sometimes it is hard to get out. I may try to at least walk 10 minutes or so outside even when it is cold. May be invigorating and there is something about experiencing nature!
Amy, PawPaw is about an hour south of where I am in Grand Rapids. Not far at all and they experience winter too!

I love this time of year: although I am sure that your season change is much more beautiful than mine here in Louisiana

ps - my husband used to live in Michigan as a child and loved it and wants to go back one day. (I think he lived in Paw-Paw, Michigan)

In the winter when it is so cold and windy that walking outdoors is not good, I take my coffee out on the front deck and stand for five minutes. It brightens my day.

Biggest Loser Fall Challenge Goals: Sleep and Strength Training

Thursday, September 26, 2013

This is my first time doing the Biggest Loser challenge. I have done 5% challenges many times, but decided I needed to change it up this fall (I will still be doing the 5% Fall Challenge with my long-time Cloverleaf team). I am hoping doing two challenges will lead to a very successful fall on my weight-loss journey.

As part of the BLC challenge, I am to write a short blog on my challenges for the fall.

I am going to focus on two main things. The first is sleep. I have not been getting enough sleep. I think this has slowed me down on my weight loss, as I am doing well in following a low carb, higher protein diet.
I have two ways I am going to try to meet the sleep goal. I am using an app called Sleep Bot on my Iphone to track my sleep. I am hoping that will make me more aware of how much sleep I am getting. The second thing is to try to get to bed earlier. (Here I am working at this blog at 3 am LOL). I am a night owl, and always find things to do late at night. (Truly I am productive in the wee hours). But I don't think that is conducive to getting a good sleep.

My second major goal is to build strength training into my daily routines. I already do 50 pushups a day, but I need to get a solid 20 minutes of strength training in at least 3 days per week. I have purchased some weight training DVD's and also have Jillian's Beginner DVD that I will be following.

So here's to some progress on these goals during Fall 2013!

Great goals. I use the Fitbit Flex to track my steps but it also tracks my sleep effeciency. It tracks how long it takes me to fall asleep and how many times I wak up during the night. I was surprised at how restless of a sleeper I am. Though I do have a pretty good sleep efficiency.

5% Challenge Daily Exercise Habit Just Jumping Jacks!

Friday, March 08, 2013

My week started out well. I did the Jillian Michaels Beginner Video. Wow, it's supposed to be for beginners, but it challenged me! Circuit 1 starts out with 3 circuits of 30 Jumping Jacks, 10 squats, and 10 Push-ups. So total of 90 Jumping Jacks, 30 squats and 30 Push-ups. OK I remember in grade school how easy Jumping Jacks seemed. but not anymore. By the end of that circuit, I was tired! I will never take Jumping Jacks for granted again!
My strength training was hindered because I had a business trip to Chicago (Yes got to be in the foot of snow that fell while I was there). I did get in some walking as well as plenty of exercise cleaning the snow off my car!
Improvement plan: Back in the office, Need to move at least every few hours, Also try to do Jillian Michaels at least 3 times per week.

5% Challenge-New Habit

Saturday, March 02, 2013

The new habit I want to work on is daily exercise. This is the part of my health that I struggle with the most. I especially have trouble with this because I have a job that is sedentary in nature (taxes.) I go for many hours without getting up from my computer. At the end of the day I am exhausted and find it hard to get motivated to start exercise.
I need to overcome these obstacles and work daily exercise into my routine.

Walking is the best remedy for a sit down desk job. I sat 12 hrs a day, there were no lunch breaks, but we were allowed to eat at our desk. We got 10 min breaks every 2 hrs. I wore my tennies to work and I was out the door every break for a 1/2 mile walk. I also got to work an hour early to hike for 3 miles. I didn't use my breaks to go to the sandbox either........that I did on company time.

U can do it.

You just reminded me, I still need to have my taxes done....THANKS.

Hey there, YOU can do it!! I am exactly the same way. Spend at least an hour commuting to work and back, work for nine hours plus, get home and all I want to do is sit in a corner all by myself, lol. I tell myself I can have one day off a week. Just do the 10 minutes.

I have the same problem and I have found one thing that has helped my cardio (walking).

I don't know if you have a smart phone or not but I got one for Christmas. I found an app called RunKeeper that has Audio cues every 5 minutes to tell me how far, how fast, my pace and how many calories I have burned.

It makes me feel like I have a partner walking with me and I want to walk more (weather permitting). It can be used indoors too.

Hugs,
Charlie

I started by improving my strength at my desk using discreet isometrics.

The "drink more water" recommendation is excellent! It covers two bases, hydration AND activity. I try to do what I call the "Ladies Room Inspection" tour, where every hour I try to hit a different bathroom (I work in a big complex, obviously).

If you need a sterner warning to "just make time to get up", remember that dangerous blood clots can form in your legs from sitting in one place for too long.

Just a thought - because I too have a very sedentary job - set a timer or drink lots of water! so that you get up at least once every hour and walk to the restroom and pick one that is the furthest from your desk. Then you can at least get some steps in on those crazy busy days!

Good luck with your habit!! emoticon

You can do it! I started very small, ten minutes a day. And it was gentle, yoga stretches. Now I swim on the masters swim team and continue my yoga practice. I do not tend to work out on the days that I work, because I have 12+ hour days, but other days, it's a habit now.

My New Scale

Saturday, January 14, 2012

My new habit is related to a new scale I recently purchased. It is the EatSmart GetFit Body Digital Body Fat Scale made by HealthTools.
What is cool about this scale is it uses a low-level electronic impulse to measure your body fat percentage, body water percentage and muscle mass percentage as well as bone mass in pounds.

I thought this would be a great way to not just view the weight in pounds but also pay attention to how the weight is composed. Two people who weigh 160 pounds could have very different fitness levels. One who has a higher muscle mass percentage and lower body fat percentage will be more fit than one who has a high body fat percentage and a low muscle mass.

What I found out is that currently my body fat percentage is too high and my muscle mass percentage is way too low. Also, my total body water percentage is below normal.

The way to lower the body fat percentage is a combination of watching the calories/healthy diet and exercise. Increasing the muscle mass percentage involves strength training. And increasing the body water percentage means drinking more water. I will address each of these in more detail in future blogs on new habits.

My new habit for today is daily weighing and recording of all 4 items on my new scale, that is body fat percentage, body water percentage, muscle mass percentage, and total body weight. Using this scale will help keep me from being discouraged if my overall weight doesn't go down as fast as I want, despite exercising. I may be able to see improvement in body fat percentage or muscle mass percentage even if the weight doesn't drop, so will know I am making progress. Or if one of the measurements starts going in the wrong direction, I will be able to troubleshoot my fitness plan to try to see what I need to change.

By the way, I have no affiliation with this company. It is just a scale I saw recommended on Amazon. Cost was a little over $50 on Amazon.
