Spark Activity Tracker - Day 2

Friday, October 04, 2013

I was very excited when the Tracker was introduced. I ordered it within the hour seeing no reason to fret over the decision as I sometimes do. I love technology! ...my inner geek... I have not been disappointed.

emoticon yes, I bought the black one!

I laced it into my sneaker. This is working very well. I know I will have to experiment with different locations since I don't wear sneakers all the time. Wishful thinking, that I could stay in the comfort of sneakers, but life calls for BIG GIRL shoes sometimes...back on topic...

I am an avid walker. My routes all all mapped out so I know the distance. The Tracker has been right on target.

emoticon emoticon emoticon

I also do yoga and Pilates. At this point I enter these exercise sessions manually as I have always done. I will put this on my experiment list but I don't mind the manual entry.

emoticon emoticon emoticon

Day 2 summary:
-Easy to use and install
-Accurate distance tracking
-Love the fact it integrates AUTOMATICALLY with Spark!

and most of all...

I am VERY excited when I receive my daily Glow Getter award! We all love recognition for our accomplishments.

I have it as well, and am not as thrilled as you - as I don't wear sneakers all the time and sometimes I'm barefoot - like when I do my walking video in the AM - so I have it like a pedometer and it doesn't give anywhere near the numbers or distance as my pedometer. Don't have time until after school is out to really mess with it.

How cool! Is it like Fitbit? My friend has a Fitbit and loves it. I was thinking it'd be cool to get something like this. I use Cyclemeter on my Iphone and it tracks when I bike and walk. I almost treat it like a game. Can I go faster than the last time? Can I beat my time? That sort of thing. Anyhow, glad you like it. I'll look into it too.

Single Digits Make Me Smile

Friday, July 26, 2013

Like most women my closet is full of clothes in multiple sizes. I don't like to admit it but it's true. Yesterday I was in an adventurous mood, exploring, venturing into an area of the closet that had been ignored....

The single digit sizes....

It's easy to understand why I have ignored and avoided this section. The last time I ventured there, my mood shifted to a bad place. It is very disheartening when buttons are strained, zippers won't close, sleeves are tight and you discover you have morphed into a giant blob who now hates mirrors and cameras.

emoticon

but...I was caught up in the moment, returning from a fun day, knowing I have been diligently exercising...

Walking emoticon emoticon emoticon

Pilates emoticon emoticon emoticon

Yoga emoticon emoticon emoticon

Cycling emoticon

eating well....portion control... not all rabbit food...

Having emoticon emoticon plus emoticon

Not emoticon plus emoticon

I have an important meeting next week. I wanted to look professional. So I took a chance and reached for a (once upon a time) favorite suit.

Size 8.... what am I crazy....

emoticon

First the jacket. Less likely to be the problem...
emoticon

Perfect.

Then the pants....

emoticon

One leg...second leg....zip!

Like a glove!
emoticon

Happy Friday!

My Inner Geek is Smiling

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

My inner 'geek' is smiling AND becoming fit. I have always loved technology. My career has evolved around it and I enjoy new gadgets, new apps and new software. As technology evolved, my life has been streamlined. Or, as I tell my customers, it's all about automation!

A couple of months ago I discovered 'wello' or as they say 'Bye-Bye Gym, Hello Convenience'. Wello lets you work out with a trainer via 2-way video on the internet. I thought WOW, really? I don't even have to leave my house? Yes, it's true...rain, snow, sleet or hail...

emoticon emoticon emoticon

How many times have you said, "I can't go to the gym, there is a cloud in the sky"....?

emoticon

This is an actual person, who knows your name and can help address your specific issues.

youtu.be/zo2usiaOCK8

There are a wide variety of classes and trainers. It is easy to find a good fit. If you are adventurous, you can mix it up! I have been taking Pilates sessions with a wonderful trainer named Kate.

emoticon emoticon emoticon

I started with group sessions and have since added a 1 on 1 session each week.

I like Kate, so I am willing to share....Here is a link to Kate on wello:
https://www.wello.com/profile/Kgodkin

Compared to working with a personal trainer at the gym, it is quite affordable. The cost is dependent on the trainer's experience and certification.

The fact I can roll out my mat, log on to the computer and begin ...won me over.
I have a Pilates group session this afternoon. The groups are limited to 5 participants plus instructor. For this 60 minute group session, it is $10.

I can see and hear Kate. She can see and hear me. She laughs (and encourages me) when she hears me say, 'I may not survive this.'

Your computer screen displays the instructor on the left half. On the right half, you will see yourself in the top quarter. The other folks (possibly 4 more) fill the bottom quarter of the screen.

I've attended the Pilates group class for 16 weeks. It's a fantastic workout, stretching muscles you may not know existed!

emoticon

and will definitely work up a sweat...

emoticon

The convenience has not turned me into a recluse, but it is a time saver on my busy days. I still head out to yoga class and the gym.

My mat is on the floor and waiting....my inner geek is going to work up a sweat!

If you have a garden and a library...

Saturday, July 13, 2013

The full quote is "If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need." --Marcus Tullius Cicero

Marcus was a Roman Statesman who lived between 106 BC and 46 BC. Obviously a very wise man from a long time ago.

I love my garden! It gives me pleasure to look at it and to work in it. I just wanted to share some photos:

I love the combination of textures and colors.

Is there anything more beautiful and delicate than a lace cap hydrangea?

Both of these hydrangea are at least 30 years old. The one on the left was transplanted about 3 years ago from another location where it wasn't growing well. It was a small twisted pretzel of a plant. As you can see it caught up!

My backyard view.....

Enough relaxing....time to get on those garden gloves and get some work done!

Very nice. I love hydrangeas. We had a hedge of them between the veggie garden and the lawn when I was a kid. Pink and blue. They're beautiful.

Are you a history buff? I'm a few episodes into a free podcast about Roman history. Or does that quote appeal to you simply because you love gardening?

Beautiful garden - I understand why you love it. Our Florida yard is a work in progress as we are transplanting different areas to have less grass and be more environmentally conscious. It takes tons of water and work to maintain grass here. I should do some pictures and see if I can figure out how to upload them.

Summer oatmeal

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Yes, I eat oatmeal in the summer! This is my 'go to' breakfast trend at the moment. It's easy, quick, nutritious, low cal! and most important...filling. This morning I added 1 cup of (organic) strawberries and 1/2 cup of blueberries. No added sugar, no added milk. The oatmeal is 100 calories. The strawberries are 46 calories and the blueberries are about 40 calories.

A great breakfast,,,under 200 calories!

I have some form of oatmeal almost every day. Sometimes the "regular" oatmeal flakes (not the instant stuff) of oats, or wheat, or other types of grains. Here the bio store (organics & fair trade items) has a wide variety of different "flocons"; my current one is einkorn. Sometimes I switch to steel cut oats, or actually the whole groats because I can't get steel cut here. So I buy the whole groats and run them through my spice grinder to break them up a bit. Not quite steel cut oats but good enough. I've also had buckwheat as a morning cereal, which is a different flavor and texture. I always use soy milk to cook whichever hot cereal.

And, of course, adding fruit is a must!

I eat oatmeal year around too. Looks like a lot of us do. I like the old fashioned or steel cut oats with a little unsweetened soy or almond milk, sometimes a tbsp of chopped or sliced nuts, some fruit, and occasionally add a tbsp of hemp seed or chia, flavor it with cinnamon once in awhile for a change of pace too. It keeps me going!
