It's 4:47am and I am up...

Tuesday, July 09, 2013

The dog woke me up about an hour ago and I cannot fall back asleep. My sleep patterns are so irregular. I wish I could get solid sleep for a few days in a row :( I made it thru the 4th weekend with no problems. We went up north for a nice, long weekend with my cousin and her husband and new baby. My husband had to work so he could not join us :( Paige and I ate low carb and it was not too bad. I made some of Paige's g0-to snack and she did run out by the last day but she was a trooper and found other things to eat that are within her plan. I am glad we had a "trial run" of eating while on the road - we leave for a 2 week vacation in 2 weeks. Now I need to start planning on what foods to prepare in advance!

Sorry about the lack of sleep, hope it settles down for you! Great idea to prepare food in advance! Its most people's downfall not finding enough good things to eat on a vacation.
Keep up the great work!

A few days have passed...

Tuesday, July 02, 2013

It's been a few days since I have posted in my blog but they have been busy! And I am happy to report I made it thru the 1st weekend on my new way of eating with success. We had a family wedding and I was able to enjoy dinner and not miss the delicious-looking cake. I am struggling with finding appropriate recipes for my daughter who is a vegetarian and on a modified Atkins diet for epilepsy. I think after the 1st month when her diet will allow a few more cards, we may see some light.

Whew, that's a tough combo. Hang in there, it's bound to get better! If you need some recommendations on cookbooks post in the Living Low Carb forum. I'm sure you'll get plenty of appropriate advice.

Day 3 is off to an early start!

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

I woke up at 4:44. I think it was a sign. Too bad I forgot to make a wish. My son and daughter like to make a wish on double digit times. 1.5 hours later I am still up. I know I will pay for this later today! Today marks day 3 of the Atkins way and my re-spark to the spark. So far so good. I am pleasantly surprised that I am drinking 128 ounces of water! Seems like I need to tweak my calories a bit but otherwise all is good. Paige is doing ok with her new diet. I am trying to get the extra fat into her whenever I can. It is the fay intake that makes the difference for her. My research shows that the first month is very important to have high levels of fat. Last night when she was taking her nighttime meds I let her take it with diet dr. pepper ( I know, I know!) and I added a tablespoon of olive oil to her cup. The oil floated on top and she was laughing at how I was trying to "sneak" the extra fat. She was a trooper and drank it all!!!!!

I agree with WOUBBIE - try to incorporate coconut oil into as many things as you can. And you're right about the fats. I can't remember the source, but there's a website promoting the Fat Fast that Atkins mentions. It's full of recipes with high fat content. It looks like pretty good stuff! I'm sure it will Google™. There's a lot of research out there these days about the benefits of a ketogenic diet for epilepsy. You're definitely on the right track.

What a great situation, that your whole family is on "the plan." Makes it so much easier to manage! I'm sorry for the necessity... but I believe all of you will find your health much improved.

LOL! Coconut oil would probably taste better! Has lots of good stuff in it too, fatwise.

Good going!

Yeah for you! I too follow the Atkins program and it has been a wonderful experience. First few days were rather rough - but today is day 26 - and I'm still doing induction - cause, well, frankly, I enjoy it and I don't feel as if I'm missing anything. I lost 12.4 pounds the first week, and a total of 18 pounds in the first 3 weeks. I know the program works. . . I am living proof! And like you - I add "fat" every chance I get. .. cause it makes all the difference! I wish you well and much continued success. emoticon

Day 2 and How the heck I got here...

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

I have been an on and off Spark People member for a few years. Yesterday was a day of change for my family. So, I re-joined spark people and started fresh. It was a day of change because my husband and I started eating the Atkins Way. I am thrilled my husband is joining me on this new adventure. The reason we decided to start eating the Atkins was was to support my daughter. Paige is 15 and was diagnosed with epilepsy 1.5 years ago and we still are working on full seizure control. Yesterday we started a diet therapy with her in hopes of seeing better control. We have met with a dietician and and I researched more than I care to admit. Paige was ready and willing to try the therapy and so here we are. Paige is using the Modified Atkins Diet approach, which is the induction phase of Atkins with a modification of increasing the fats even more then what Atkins recommends. We made it through day 1 and I am ready to see what day 2 brings.

Excellent! It's wonderful that you and your husband are both on board. That makes it feel like a family lifestyle rather than a burden of some kind. Here's to glowing health for all of you!
