FINISHED - with the 98 Day Challenge that is...

Oh, this "journey" will never be FINISHED, as I believe it's all a part of life. Me attempting to take care of this temple the Good Lord resides in.

On June 10th, 2013, I entered a 98 Day Challenge and this past Mon., Sept. 16th, I took my final measurements (where the challenge is concerned).

I have to say I am quite relieved it's behind me now, as life has been just a bit too stressful to think about... tracking food, tracking workouts, bodyfat, tape, and scale measurements. NO, I'm not going to stop doing any of them, I just don't need the stress of HAVING to. I believe I've written down (or typed) almost EVERYTHING that has gone in to my mouth. Oh, there were those days when it didn't make it into this journal, and yet... it was always on my planner, a post it, in the dirt, ;o) or written... somewhere.

I learned SO much in the past 98 days. In addition to the value of the health aspect of the challenge, I learned so much about myself …my good health is important and up to me. With God, my husband on my "team," & the support of my online friends, I CAN do anything I commit to doing, goal setting is NOT as difficult as I always believed it to be, I have put new habits in to place that will carry on long after this challenge. I am a WINNER in more ways than one. Yes, I have transformed my body & decreased my fat by 13.05% of fat, (or 19.35 lbs.) in addition to increasing my lean by 9.55 lbs., removing (no, I didn’t lose it, as I have no intentions of finding it) over 19 inches, and REMOVING 9 lbs. More importantly, I am a WINNER because I saw this challenge through living out of suitcases & boxes for six weeks, job hunting, knee pain, my husband’s recent health “issues,” and living on the same land & working out with family who have little or no encouragement to give. Oh yes, and I’m more comfortable in my own skin than I have been in…50 years.

I have not "arrived" by any means. I still have SO much work to do on this body, and again... it's a "journey" and one that I'm on forever. The journey might look different at times, and I realize it's a lifestyle not something to do for... 98 days.

Now, for the pictures... I do have to say, I wish I would have kept the "pose" the same, and I didn't...







I am SURE that ALL of the remaining bodyfat I'm carrying is in my butt & thighs!

    emoticon How awesome that you completed a 98 day challenge especially with all the roadblocks you mentioned. I had to go back and look to make sure it didn't say 28 days! WOW - 98 days!! Suzi just posted that from 9/22, it's 100 days until the New Year, so with you as inspiration, I hope I can do my own personal challenge for 100 days and start the New Year off right. You look great!

    Way to go Kiko!! You really nailed it with the challenge - not only did you reach your goals, but you passed them and went on to new goals. The challenge was quite a learning experience for us all. Thank you for showing us the way to setting goals and accomplishing them!!!

    Great job Kiko! 19" lost with only 9lbs! That's a whole lotta muscle added and it is noticeable!

And because you sat funny while you tanned you can see a tan line!

Hope DH is on the mend. What a way for him to end this challenge - by creating a whole new one!

NOW, about my goals...

I will be REMOVING 5.62% of fat
I will be REMOVING 10.5 pounds
I will REMOVE 1" off of my chest
I will REMOVE 2" off of my waist
I will REMOVE 2" off of my hips
I will REMOVE 1" off of both thighs
I will REMOVE 3/4" of an inch off the area above my left knee (recovering from knee "issues" & they're out of balance)

I am going to achieve these goals by 9/16/13 by...

Strength training Monday, Wednesday & Friday (along with a min. of 20-30 mins. of cardio) & stretching

Cardio training Tues. & Thursday & stretching
WOO HOO, I'm am... DOING THIS!

I'm SO excited as my best buddy (husband of 32 yrs) and I have just registered for the Burn the Fat Summer Challenge, both individually & as a couple and we are going to have a great time cheering one another along on our 98 day "journey" together.

April's close & May's month of Movement...

First of all, how was your April? Did you put goals in to place? Did you work toward achieving them? Remember, if you… fail to plan, you plan to fail. I know, I know, it sounds so… trite & I never believed it until I recently started writing down my goals. Prayerfully determining what I need/want, dialing it in & going for it.



To really put a visual on the entire idea of goal setting, here’s what the past year has looked like for my husband and me. We were living in CO, decided we were tired of talking about… “one day” living out an 18 yr old dream of ours to move to Hawaii. So, we prayed about it, got the clarity & confirmation we needed from God & started planning. We put it on paper, we made a visual board that hung on the side of our refrigerator, along with the specific street we would walk down, the wall at the ocean we would sit on, and within six months those pictures on that board ALL became a reality.

Here’s a similar version of what hung on our refrigerator…



Oh, and I might add I made 5” x 7” of the same larger board, laminated them & both my husband and I had them with us at all times. We always start our morning in prayer, and we prayed that if it was His will… that what was on that board would become a reality.

NOTE: we had never visited the Big Island of Hawaii, only Oahu & Maui over the past 18 yrs. & after a great deal of ‘homework” we just knew we wanted to live here.

Okay, so I write this why… to tell you that you too can do it!



Fast forward to today… I truly feel like I’m on the other side of my knee “challenges.” It seems it’s still a bit temperamental at times, and the other one is even having some “sympathy” pains lately, and yet… I am not going to let them slow me. I am guessing the left one is hollering a little as I’ve been over compensating for like… 7+ months now. Some mornings my day starts out with a 20-30 minute walk, stretch, ice, and then a workout, stretch and ice again. It’s what seems to work for me right now.

When SARALEE11 (one of the 17 DD leaders & my little gerbil buddy emoticon ) posted the challenge for April, I decided to climb on board & so glad I did. Fortunately, the “challenge” was personal, in that I could challenge myself in what ever area I needed/wanted to & I did just that. I’m not real “compliant” with the 17 Day Diet eating lately, and I knew I wouldn’t be, so… I set my own goals in areas that I knew I wanted/needed to work.

Here were the goals I set at the beginning of April… to move 5-7 days every week, increase my lean mass by 3%, remove a minimum of 3" overall & 5 pounds - and here are the results...

I moved 24 of the 30 days (through quite a bit of knee pain at times, not always looking "pretty," and I MOVED)

My lean mass is UP by 3.5% (WOO HOO, as my body composition seems to be one of my greatest challenges)

I removed 7.25 INCHES overall (the hips did NOTHING I might add, & I believe that might be where 20% of the 25.5% body fat might be)

My weight - well, that's another story... it went up 1/2 pound, which I find interesting as I’ve always said, the scale should be your last measurement & it was. I'm okay with the weight as I'm only about... 7 lbs. from goal and if the body composition & inches continue to improve, I'll even take my present weight.



Now, for a month of movement in May… I started my day out with a walk, some HIIT, foam roll work, stretching & now… I’m off to lanai to enjoy some time with a good book at dogs we are dog sitting.

If you’ve never been one to set goals, consider it, as it REALLY WORKS!

Lastly, one of my favorites, I find it to be a great reminder...



I am re-visiting this blog to acknowledge all who I am thankful for, in helping me help myself to get focused. First & foremost... God (thankfully He's SO patient with me), my husband for his support & encouragement and my Spark-lers in my life. Every one of you who have come alongside me, supported & encouraged me along the way. YOU are the ones who have taught me the value of taking care of me. Of SMART goal setting. Oh, a lot of what I've learned on these boards has been a refresher, and yet... you're the ones who put it into place, the ones who showed me I too could do it.

THANKS, I'm forever grateful to every one of you.

I will REMOVE 2% of body fat

I will REMOVE a minimum of 4 inches overall

I will REMOVE 2-4 pounds

I will do this by....

Strength Training - M, W & F
High Intensity Interval Training - Tues & Thurs
Eating 4-6 small, healthy meals per day

    Great vision of moving to Hawaii - it's my dream to live near the ocean one day too - hopefully with a 'mate for life' (which I'm still working on connecting with lol).

You are an amazing example of what can happen when you really put your mind to something! Glad you regrouped after a little weekend detour. We all have those.. so did I!! The trick is not getting derailed.. and boy - we're figuring that out, huh? I've been practicing for maintenance now, for several months! haha.

So far this month, I am learning to LOVE letting go of all that is holding me back! It FEELS GREAT!! emoticon

A Glimpse of my Jan., 2013...

Okay, about my month. I’m not REAL pleased, & I have to acknowledge I have “logged” quite a few fitness minutes, & my new job is SO physical for this... woman who has suffered from knee “challenges” and turned FIFTY all in the past few months. :D

Seriously, I wore my heart rate monitor to work the other day, and in 5 hrs. I burned 1153 calories, & I even made the mistake of taking it off not realizing that I would then have to reface & block the entire store on my own (11,000+ products), along w/dust mopping the entire store & wet mopping 1/3 of it. So, I am guessing I probably burned at least 1300 calories or more, in one shift. I find so many other muscles ache lately that the knee pain is being “drown” out. Probably not a bad thing, & w/every new day, the pains all seem to be decreasing. Oh, and w/several new products I’ve purchased, yes… for knee pain, leg cramps, nerve pain (sciatica), etc. emoticon I believe I will be working pain free in… another week or so?! Okay, it’s a HUGE prayer of mine.

My weight is not doing much, I did actually see 131 at one point this month, & it was SO short lived, I didn’t even change my ticker. I have traveled from my 132 up to 136 and back. I don’t believe I am properly feeding myself w/the level of activity in my life, and I’m adjusting daily.

Oh, one other thing, in my cycle 1 of the 17DD during Jan., I removed a ˝ percent of body fat (in SEVENTEEN days), & I was quite disappointed. So, w/some additional reading & some input from another SparkPeep (thanks Imelda), I decided to do an “intermittent fast” (IF). I ate all of my calories for one day in an 8 hr. period & by the next day I removed ˝ percent of body fat. I will be looking at this a little further & I am considering an “IF” once every week or every other week, as this seems to be a way to really change body composition, which is where I am really struggling. I just thought I would share that bit of info.

    Yes! Fabulous February is exactly what is on the brain right now ;-)!

You really are burning a lot of calories. Not enough food and or not enough rest could be the problem. Or at least part of it... Hope the pains go away soon :-(. I know how frustrating that can be.

Wow half a percent in one day? That is awesome!!! I do hope you can find a way to keep implementing IF. I know for me it has helped. And even during my not so focused time I at least know I should cut myself off from food early enough to get a full 12 hours in a way that does not make me have to push breakfast later in the day. Especially since I am up at 5 every day.
What do you use to check your body fat percentage?
Thank you for telling me I motivated you! I didn't think my food tracker would be much help to anyone honesty because I had just started tracking again and I knew I could end up getting overwhelmed by it again. So I thought the info on IF could serve you more purpose ;-)

I am ready for that fabulous February! Let's get a plan in place and stick to it! emoticon
