Doctor put me on the DASH Diet weight loss solution to lower my high blood pressure. Read the book and stocked up on groceries according to the meal plans. Phase 1 is restrictive in what you can eat and lasts for two weeks. I started the DASH diet on Sunday, 11/17/13. The only "cheats" I have had are not giving up my hazelnut creamer in my coffee (2 cups of coffee each morning with 1 tbsp creamer each) and eating Dannon light & fit greek strawberry yogurt. I've read countless testimonials of how much weight people lose in just a few days, and thought "yea, right". I was going to wait until this Sunday to have my weigh in, but decided to weigh this morning...down 4.8 pounds!!! Could not believe it....kept stepping on the scales just to make sure! Really gave me motivation! So hopefully Sunday's weigh in will be even better! Was really tempted today to have a soft pretzel, but remembered my excitement over losing 4.8 pounds in only 4 pretzel for me! No carbs, no sweets/sugar, gluten hurting belly after eating! Thought I would have carb and sugar withdraw headaches, but nothing really to speak of. Do keep track of my calories (on Spark People) and each day is less than 1,000 calories, usually around 700-800, yet not hungry. Feel satisfied, motivated, and energized, and realized that I can do this! So...WOOHOO for me!

    Thanks Renie! I appreciate your kind words! Hang in can do it too! I have always been a junk food and sweets addict, so was not sure how I would do on DASH. Even just doing it for 4 days straight is an accomplishment for me! But somehow I have been faithful. Hopefully my streak will last a long time!

    I am sooo very proud of you for maintaining and not giving into your temptation for junk food. Now if I could just follow suit. Sigh. I haven't given up yet, though.

Some days I am so good and everything goes right and other days I am just horrible and not on track at all....My best times for tracking and eating properly and healthy are at work. Once I get home it all goes out the window.....just can't seem to find my willpower or motivation or whatever it is that I am lacking. I hate to talk negatively to myself, and that is what I end up doing, which just makes me feel worse, which makes me eat the wrong foods. Feel like I am spiraling downward.

Went to the doctor's today for my physical and annual exams. Lost 1.2 pounds since I was there last week, and my blood pressure was down! Woohoo for me!!! Have been trying to eat healthy, although this evening I didn't do too well with that. My weigh-in day is always my "anything" day, so that was today....if I have a craving for something I wait to have it on my anything day...and by the time that rolls around I have forgotten all about the craving! Works for me!

Purchased the DASH diet book that was recommended by my doctor. DASH stands for Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension. Made the stuffed pepper recipe. Was good, but not like the stuffed peppers we all think of. My husband did eat it. I was prepared to make my supper and his different supper. He said he would eat what I was eating...that if it was good for my blood pressure that it was good for his too! He is such a sweetheart!!

It has been a week since I've been on SP. Have not been able to use my right hand and type...Have been having trouble with my hands the last few months and finally today saw my doctor. Have carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands, but right hand is the worst and now is really bad. Can't use thumb anymore and now have to wear brace until I can have surgery...makes it hard to type! Didn't realize how much we use our thumbs, something we just take for granted! From getting dressed to undoing seat belt, I have found just how much I can and can't do...frustrating and very painful at the same time. So must take it easy and be patient and realize my temporary limitations.

Also been diagnosed with hypertension, and have been put on medication and the DASH diet to lower my blood pressure. Was told that even losing 10 pounds could help lower blood pressure. Got the DASH diet book downloaded to my Kindle so I can start to read and follow it. So tonight was "the last supper" with extra cheese!!

I've done pretty well (for the most part) with my eating choices and my tracking, but now feel that my health really depends on it. So no more "well, maybe I'll just eat a little of this, etc. etc." NOW is the time that I really have to buckle down and get serious. The high blood pressure explains why I have been plagued recently by many migraines and can even affect your kidneys, which I just recently had kidney stones.

I have renewed my commitment to myself to eat healthy and exercise. Before I was kind of doing it because I knew I SHOULD. I HAVE TO, so tomorrow morning I start my new journey to my healthy life....I know I can do this, I don't have a choice anymore....I'll be successful!

    First I want to say how sorry I am that both hands are effected by carpal tunnel. Ouch! no, double Ouch!!

As to your high bp, you are very luck you got this wake up call now instead of after it was too late.

I got my wakeup call and got it into high gear fast - a little too fast and I'm now at square one again, but my health is greatly improved.

Forgot to weigh in this morning before I left for work, so will have to write myself a note to weigh tomorrow morning.

Had a "wellness" day at work on Tuesday. One of the tests I signed up for was the blood glucose and cholesterol test. Was concerned since there is diabetes in my family and since I am overweight....actually considered obese by the medical charts...was so hoping for positive results. Well.....blood sugar was 94 and cholesterol was 179!! Woohoo for me!!!

Had several other tests and all were great....I am healthy....except my blood pressure was high. It is usually about 110/70 or 80 and it was 146/90. So will check it a few times over the next two weeks by going to CVS or Rite Aid and using the blood pressure machines. Will have to seriously watch my diet and start exercising more to bring it down. I actually think it was a fluke since I was nervous about all the other testing being done. Anyway, I will watch it. I don't want to take medication for it if it is high. I don't take any meds now and really don't want to start!

Another Woohoo! for me is that since rejoining Spark People back in September I have really been trying to eat healthy. And my husband finally noticed! I had not told him that I was trying to lose weight, although he does know that I track my food. When I told him what my cholesterol was he was thrilled he said he had noticed that I was eating more healthy foods and that must be why my results were so good! He even tried a new recipe I made which was kale salad, and he liked it!

So I am excited that my good eating choices are beginning to pay off! Now I just need to start exercising, other than walking, so my weight loss will kick in! This has really given me even more motivation!
