SparkPeople Member on 'Today'

SparkPeople member Leah Nicholas (LMNICHOLAS) (note - link has been corrected) will appear on NBC's "Today" show this Monday, September 15! She is scheduled to appear during the fourth hour of "Today," which begins at 10:00 A.M., Eastern and Pacific.

We hope that her fellow SparkPeople members can tune in, tell their friends, and support Leah as she shares her amazing weight-loss story (over 110 pounds shed) and Spreads the Spark to millions of viewers across the country! Leah has been a member of SparkPeople for over a year and a half. Since then, she has been an avid user of the food tracker and fitness resources.

Here's how Leah used SparkPeople, in her own words:

“I first began counting calories on SparkPeople and working out three times a week doing light cardio and weight training. After I lost about 50 pounds, I moved to Indianapolis and started my new job as a speech pathologist at a nursing home. I began packing all my lunches and pre-portioning all foods to be prepared. I then began increasing my cardio, doing cardio four times a week for 60 minutes, including running, biking, yoga, cycling and Pilates. I also worked with a personal trainer two times a week for about three months to gain new ideas for weight training and toning my body. I recently completed a sprint triathlon (500m swim in open water, 10 mile bike and 5K run), which I trained intensely for over two months on the race's course. I would adjust my caloric intake as the weight came off to continue losing, never going below 1,200 so I wouldn't lower my metabolism. I also monitored fat, carbs and protein on a daily basis, making sure I was within the appropriate ranges.

The areas of SparkPeople that helped me the most are the food diary, and being able to save your food and its values. This saves so much time, especially since most people tend to eat similar things on a daily basis. I also enjoyed the area that assists you in how many calories you should burn a week depending upon how many days you work out. I also liked the tracking areas, which give you a good visual of where you are compared to your goal. I also used quite a few of the recipes on the website.”

New tool - Gym Finder to find local gyms & get free pass

Hi everyone

We launched a new tool/link on our Fitness Resource Center where you can enter your zip code and to find gyms near you that offer a free pass. To use the finder:
- Click on Healthy Lifestyle, then Fitness
- Look at the end of the center column on the page for the "Find a Gym" section
- Enter your zip code and click search (works for people in US only)
- You'll be taken to our partner Gymticket.com's site to see gyms near you
