Save the Date: Show Your Spark Book Club Weekend!

Wednesday, December 02, 2009

One of the biggest and most important"Show Your Spark" Weekends is coming this January 22nd- 24th, 2010. This is your chance to show others that you're part of a worldwide movement in fitness, nutrition and healthy living!

As many of you know, one of the biggest reasons that SparkPeople is free is because our members do such an amazing job of Spreading the Spark! This allows us to keep our costs low and keep resources focused on making the site better for you and your friends. That's why we encourage you to tell others about SparkPeople. Show Your Spark Weekend is an easy way to get the word out and find even more SparkFriends to share your journey.

So, why is this one of the most important Show You Spark Weekends – because we are trying to get on the New York Times Bestsellers List and you can help! We are holding a Show Your Spark Book Club Weekend as well as a contest to have Chris "SparkGuy" Downie call into your local book club!

We are currently developing a bonus book site that will hold all the details needed to host your very own book club that weekend, but we wanted to provide a "Save the Date" post so people can begin to plan ahead! More details will be posted soon, but below are details on the contest.

  • SparkPeople will hold a STS Book Club Weekend January 22nd-24th, 2010

  • SparkRallies posted for this weekend only will be entered into a drawing to have Chris “SparkGuy” Downie call into their book club meeting or SparkRally

For more Spread the Spark ideas, visit this page. And to Show Your Spark every day of the year, check out our branded products and apparel at SparkPeopleStore.com. We hope that we can count on you to Show Your Spark this January 22nd- 24th, 2010. As always, thank YOU for making SparkPeople such a positive place!

I was touched by how Chris inadvertantly encouraged his (former) co-worker, Pat, into changing her lifestyle. I'm three chapters in, and it hit some heartstrings enough to make me cry and nod my head in agreement with some of the statements!

My best wishes to everyone at SP, especially Chris, for doing right by SO MANY PEOPLE. That's a true humanitarian right there! Good luck everyone, we can do it! emoticon

-A fully illustrated workout program created by SparkPeople's certified fitness trainer, Coach Nicole

-A stunning 16-page color insert featuring before-and-after photos and the stories of some of SparkPeople's dedicated members

I had pre-ordered the Spark and was so excited when my UPS man delivered it. I read a chapter each night before bed and it reaffirmed all the reasons why I joined Sparkpeople in the first place. The success stories inspired me to be a success story too! As I read, I kept saying "Yes, yes, yes". Reading the book in conjunction with doing the program on line strengthened my belief and commitment to the program. Thank you Chris!

emoticon Just finished reading the Spark. This book gives the tools to plan & stay with the changes needed for your lifestyle plan. I have been a member of SparkPeople since March 2008. I joined mainly to change my eating habits. I now eat 3 meals & 2 snacks a day instead of 1 meal (dinner). I know that sounds stupid but I had a lifetime of 1 meal a day and it was hard for me to change, to much food to eat. I had to change for my health. I have learned a lot about health, eating the right food & the importance of exercise. I use the meal tracker daily. I am now starting the diet. This book & website will help me reach my goals. Thank You SparkPeople for our home full of support members.

Start Earning Awards Today with the New and Improved SparkTrophies

Tuesday, December 01, 2009

Good morning SparkPeople!

Today we launched a new feature: SparkTrophies. Previously, members could earn trophies by accumulating SparkPoints. Beginning today, members can earn a variety of trophies for reaching new milestones such as SparkVersaries (your anniversary of joining the site), being a Trivia leader, and losing weight! Here's a list of the new motivational trophies you can earn on the site:

  • Spread the Spark* Awarded for referring at least 5 people to SparkPeople in a month (only given once a month)
  • Fitness minutes* Awarded for logging at least 1,000 fitness minutes in a month (only given once a month)
  • SparkPoints* Awarded for earning at least 500 SparkPoints in a month (only given once a month)
  • SparkPeople Trivia leader Awarded for answering at least 30 trivia questions and getting at least 90% correct
  • Consistency Awarded for spinning the SparkPoints wheel during the month. There are two levels for this award: one for spinning at least 20 times/month and another for spinning every day of the month
  • Popular blog post Awarded when one of your blog posts becomes "popular" due to other members' votes (see a list of popular blog posts)
  • Weight loss Select your own trophy based on your weight loss progress
  • SparkVersary Select your own trophy to celebrate when you joined SparkPeople
  • Community Team Awarded for joining the Community Team

*These trophies are given at the beginning of each month for the previous month's accomplishments.

Trophies will be displayed on your SparkPage and you'll be notified by email each time you earn a new trophy. To learn more about how SparkTrophies work, please read this article.

We hope you enjoy earning SparkTrophies and find them to be fun and motivational as you continue on your healthy lifestyle adventure!

I had well over 500 Spark Points in July, but did not receive the 500 Spark Points Trophy . . . also, I spun the Spark Points Wheel at least 20 times (perhaps everyday of the month) and I didn't get the consistency trophy either . . . I know, no big deal right? However, it's like everyone is saying, these small rewards for doing SP make a big difference in staying motivated!!

What is the Perfect Attendance trophy? I've noticed people getting it, but don't see it here and it doesn't turn up on a sparkpeople web search.

Track Calories Burned for Wii and Wii Fit Activities

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Hi everyone!

We know that many members enjoy exercising and getting active by using the Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit. We have received many inquiries about how to track these exercises on the site, but until now, we didn't have any data available about the calories burned for these activities.

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) has published two research studies about the fitness benefits of various Wii activities, and these studies also included the average calories burned based on study participants. Now that this information is available, we have added several Wii and Wii Fit activities to our cardio tracker so that members can estimate how many calories they burn. You'll now be able to track and estimate your calorie burn more accurately for 11 Wii (baseball, bowling, boxing, golf and tennis) and Wii Fit (advanced step, free run, free step, island run, rhythm boxing and super hula hoop) exercises, thanks to this recent research.

To estimate your calorie burn and/or add these activities to your Fitness Tracker, simply click the "Add Cardio" button and perform a search for "Wii" or "Wii Fit." Enter the number of minutes you performed the exercise and then "Show Calories Burned" or "Add Exercise." It's that simple!

If you'd like to review the studies conducted by ACE, you can download the PDFs from ACE by clicking the links below. Please note that you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open these documents. We recommend reading these links for more information about using a Wii for fitness.

We hope you enjoy this update to the SparkPeople Fitness Tracker!

well I tell you I shed some sweat on my Wii and I really do love it, yes I'm obese (yes,I said it) and am trying to stay motivated and it is fun to see progress and to try to compete with my granddaughters who are pencil thin !! I just want to track it on my fitness tracker and what may be nothing to someone thin, means a WHOLE LOT to someone like me, so I am going to continue to MOVE and lose this weight !!! Yea Wii !! emoticon emoticon

Once again they tested on college students--did they ever think of testing this for older people? Perhaps the "mild workout" would be just the ticket? And I have to agree with the author's closing comment--the best workout is one that you will do. I really love the Wii Fit. I'm exercising DAILY because it is fun. I don't have to drag myself to do it. I have to believe that this is a very good thing.

PROVERBS31JULIA 8/6/2010 6:31PM

After thinking I was going to be the last person on earth to get a Wii, my brother recently bought the newer (black case) Wii which came with the Resort Sports or some such. We eventually bought the balance board with the older Wii Fit (on eBay, good price! yay us!), and then just a few weeks ago, my husband and son bought me the Wii Fit Plus. I like it more because it goes ahead and puts up the calories burned, based on what it has already determined for your weight and BMI and what you've told it for gender, height, age.

So today, I noticed on the iPhone app, it still shows the old Wii entry for an exercise and defaults to its own calorie calculation (which may mean that I need to adjust my weight on Sparkpeople to agree with what Wii tells me, even though that number is different from what my scales tell me (I've got one of those digital ones that measures BMI through electrical impedance)?? I just came on here and did the entry for free step based on time and calories burned (the Wii version of my calories burned).

"Exercise loves me so, for the Wii screen tells me so!" (okay so it doesn't really rhyme with the old Sunday School song...)

HOLLYQUINN 6/22/2010 8:15PM

I have a qualm with this study and the system set up now in the Cardio count... are the calories burned really so much less than the Wii Fit Plus system says? I find that even their estimation feels like less than I'm actually burning, but then this system says I'm burning even less?
I would burn around 230 for 20 minutes under the "Dance: Fast, Ballet, Twist" thing, even though I was actually doing Pump It Up and Dance Dance Revolution, and that got me through weight loss easily before, so it was accurate enough.
This, though? The calorie burning counts are way off from each other for each activity...

How do I track the Muscle, Yoga & Balance exercises from my Wii fit Plus Workout?

These don't fall into the cardio categories that you currently list.

I would like to list the Muscle ones under Strength Training as that's what they are BUT although we can add our own exercises, under Strength there is no option for 'own bodyweight' resistance excercises.

I can't add them under Cardio either as I'm not sure of the calorie burn rate for these as the WiiFit just calculates all at the same calorie burn per minute :( (and they aren't cardio anyway).

PALMETTOWREN 4/9/2010 5:52PM

I have a question about the Wii Fit study. The participants were 20-24 year olds. The article doesn't give any information on their weight. So how can they say that "this activity burns this many calories"? Doesn't that depend a lot on the person's weight? Every calorie-burn estimator I've seen takes the person's weight into account. I'm pretty sure it takes a lot more energy to move 300 lbs through 30 minutes of stepping than it would to move 150 lbs through that same 30 minutes. So couldn't these calorie burns be way off if a person weighs a lot more or a let less than average?

This is really good for SParkPeople is the best in the world web sight never have I seen anything like it. It has everything, they help plans your meals, exercise, have blogs pages for you to talk to people, you choice a team to be on and you really get acquainted with the leaders of the team and they answer your questions, you get recipes they are sooooo good, this isn't all......but it is the GREATEST!!!! place to be.... there is not greatest....Hey, I been to Nutri system,,,,La Weight,,, Wanted to got to Jenny Craig but they were too busy the tow times I wanted to talk to someone in person at the store and no one else was around at the times I went but worker wanted to talk with each other...well here at SP you can just talk and get it off....Can't say enough about this web sight....SUPER FANTASTIC.... emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
