In addition I have not received any surveys either (though as I just mentioned have been accepted 3 times) - I was looking forward to helping.

I answered a survey just the other day. This one was about coffee. So i checked the point status this morning. I had thought maybe the points don't get entered until you actually do a survey. Nope. Still no points. I don't think you should have offered the points if you couldn't really come through with them.

I am another person who has joined twice. Still Zero points for joining and zero surveys to participate in. Maybe someone could post an answer as to why this is the case. It is a little frustrating to keep reading about wanting people to join the survey team and then nothing comes of it, even promised points.

Is this open to all from all over the world? I couldn't find any rules on that. Is it like other things on SP, its really only open for those in the USA (because of the costs associated with making it international, totally understandable)? I'd hate to sign up and then, find out that it was a waste of my time. I looked for Terms and Conditions but I'm assuming it doesn't show up until you have registered. Since it's gc's being given away, more than likely this is only for USA members. I was hoping for more information by coming here and reading comments, makes me wonder what's going on with all this survey stuff too.

I joined on the first day you asked people to join, and I haven't gotten my sparkpoints. I thought I messed something up, so I "joined" a second time. (I was surprised that it let me do that.)     I took the survey a short time ago. Didn't receive 25 points or a reply of any kind. I just figured that SP didn't need feedback from a user who was not trying to lose weight and already enjoys exercise. I here to learn to be healthier in my living. Not very interesting. I was thinking, however, they points were awarded for completing the survey.

Reflections on Winning the Better Business Bureau Torch Award

Tuesday, February 02, 2010

Back in 2004, SparkPeople received the Torch Award for outstanding business ethics and integrity from the Cincinnati Better Business Bureau. Recently, the Cincinnati BBB asked if we would talk a little about winning this award and how it affected our company, so they stopped by to shoot a short video, featuring SparkPeople's Editor and Content Manager, Coach Nicole.

To view the 60-second video, please click here.

It's been six years since we received this award, and we're still working hard each and every day to reach our mission of SPARKING millions of PEOPLE to reach their goals and lead healthier lives. Like the video says, we were (and still are) excited to have a positive association with the Better Business Bureau and were happy to share this video with others to promote the Torch Award to other worthy companies. Thanks for watching!

I like the turn in some sparkpoints for the dvd... for people who bought the book early. I pre-ordered the book.. got it in January. Good book, I keep going over the chapters again.. just to get it through my head! I won't start the actual plan till I'm done reading the first part a few times.

Actually, I don't have a copy of it, but I thought the offer was (in January) that upon ordering thru the site (which I did, via the WalMart link), I would be receiving the DVD free. I did receive the 500 points, thank you. Now about that DVD..... (I think my experience is like Goldie041

Not to be mean, but when I buy a book, toy or clothing at any location and they then offer a different incentive, sale or promotion the next week, I don't get mad because I have something that I wanted and agreed to a purchase price for. If you were that concerned, I am sure your local library will get a copy soon. Otherwise, enjoy the book, learn a lot and don't be angry over a few bucks--

I bought mine at Walmart for $20 after seeing it listed online for $12. It upsets me a little but I brushed it off. I NEED the book to further my lifelong journey to a healthy living so it's $20 spent well. :) A free dvd would've been nice too but I don't shop online much.

Anyhow, you can send me a copy of the dvd if you'd like. What I did not like however was that when I looked to purchase it online it said Wal-Mart $12.00 when I got there it was $20.97 bummer for me.

I agree that those of us who ordered the book in Dec. or Jan. should also get the new DVD. The book was supposed to come with a video but we had to down load it.
I can't watch it as I have the same problems that CHOCMOM has.
If we could get the DVD -we would be more motivated to work harder. Please think this over. I hope you will have good news for us that ordered our books early.

Thank you!

Ok, I read this on FB before I saw it here. I did not see where it said you had to purchase the book between Feb 1st and Feb 14th. So I've already sent a copy of my receipt. I hope Spark will reconsider this rule. One of the awesome "freebies" on Spark, is all the work-out videos. But they are only awesome if you have high-speed internet service. When I pre-ordered the book, I was excited about all the great prizes that came with pre-ordering the book. One of them, I thought, was a download of this video. Later when I tried to "claim" my prize, I found out it is just for viewing - can't download. I can't view it - it stops, freezes, sputters, etc., the same problem I have with most videos on Spark (and Youtube, etc.) So my prize for pre-ordering the book, is to PURCHASE the FREE work-out video - is this correct. I used the gift certificate to purchase T's to spread the spark, I wish I had saved it to purchase this DVD. Thanks, for letting me vent.

    Hi chris,
Thanks so much for writing The Spark. I have been on spark for awhile and lost 120 pounds in 08 and 09. I won't go into all of it but I gained it back. I did a lot of stuff on my own. I would not follow the program like I was suppose to. I would not make a collage. I could not see the purpose behind it. I did not like blogging etc. I got your book when it first came out and something clicked. I am on a 28 day streak. I made my collage and understand how important it is. I followed the steps from day one. I am eating enough, exercising enough. OH the 10 minutes hooked me again. I can do 10 minutes. Now I can do 36 minutes. I put a picture of me on my page. Unheard of for me to admit I was fat. The book has touched me so much. I have read it again, underlining everything now. I will read it again until I believe what you have wrote is true. Sorry to be so long winded but you have done a thing that is very far reaching writing this book. Thank you so much. emoticon

NEW: Track Calories Burned for Kettlebell Training

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Hi everyone!

Exercising with kettlebells is a recent trend that is here to stay, and some members who use kettlebells have asked about tracking calories burned with this popular training method.

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) has published a research study on the average calorie burn for kettlebell training. Using this information, we have added "kettlebell training" to our cardio tracker so that members can better estimate how many calories they burn during their workouts.

To estimate your calorie burn and/or add kettlebell training to your Fitness Tracker, simply click the "Add Cardio" button and perform a search for "kettlebell." Enter the number of minutes you performed the exercise and then "Show Calories Burned" or "Add Exercise." It's that simple!

If you'd like to review the study conducted by ACE, you can download the PDF from ACE by clicking the link below. Please note that you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open this document. We recommend reading these links for more information about kettlebell training calorie burn (note the specific exercises, kettlebell sizes and speed studied, all of which affect calorie burn).

Kettlebells: Twice the Results in Half the Time (ACE)
The Iron Out the Facts on Kettlebell Training (SparkPeople)

We hope you enjoy this update to the SparkPeople Fitness Tracker!

BOWK5150 - I agree. I also am not sure why it adds it as a cardio workout. I use the Danskin Now Calorie burner workout DVD and while it does raise my heart rate, particularly during the kettlebell throws, this is primarily more a strength workout. So on the fitness tracker I just enter my own workout as a strength exercise with total minutes. I can't fill in the reps and sets options because I am doing multiple different exercises of varying # of reps and I skip the calories burned because I don't even want to venture a guess. Previous spark articles even mention that Spark will NOT attempt to calculate calories burned on strength workouts because of too many variables. That made sense to me, so why the fitness tracker now asks for and includes number of calories burned when you enter a strength workout does not make sense. See this FAQ from Spark here:

BOWK5150 1/26/2012 7:39PM

I believe this needs some adjustment. Why is it that for anyone who enters this as exercise has the same number of calories for the same amount of time. For instance; two people exercise for 30 minutes, one has a body weight of 125 the other has a weight of 190 pounds they both enter 30 minutes of kettlebell in the exercise log...both show 600 calories. This is impossible! I could see if person A was 250 pounds it's possible he could burn 600 calories in half an hour. An extremely fit person will not burn as much.

Please fix this to allow proper body weight to play a part in the calculation. It is severely flawed the way it is and is vey unrealistic as a result.

I absolutely love it! One or two pieces of equiptment and I work my whole body. The swing of it I find very hypnotic and I can actually keep at this where the other gym machines bored me.     I just purchased my kettlebell(s) and have ordered some DVDs, to include the one that yogagirl55 mentioned. Also, I'd love to hear of the experiences that others are having with the kettlebell workout.

SOOO Very excited that you guys added this!! I want to YELL FROM THE MOUNTAIN TOPS!! Finally!!

Kettlebells are the BEST workout, it's strength and cardio in one.

I have a dvd by Lauren Brooks and I also have both workbooks by Art of Strength

This information is great! My only question is - the pdf from ACE states that the average workout burns 272 calories in 20 mins, but when I put 20 mins in fitness tracker it says I burned 400 calories - should the fitness tracker be adjusted??

Woohoo! Alright! I love my KB! Anyone interesting in trying them should check out Dragon Door .com. I use the KB Goddess DVD and it is excellent.
The SheHulk emoticon is also great! She's the background for my SparkPage so now I have a signature emoticon! heehee
Maybe there will be some KB SP vids soon? Even ones just demonstrating the basic moves and good form would be great. KBs are awesome in that with just simple movements you get really dynamic results!

Wouldn't this be considered more of a strength workout vs cardio (or combination of the two)? Still, great that we can now track it!

Along those same lines, I would like to be able to track boot camp classes that I take. We do an hour class (about half cardio and half weights). I have been logging the weights under strength the best that I can. Sometimes I can't find an exact match so I get as close as I can. I don't really know how to log the cardio part though. It is not just running though. We do running, shuffles, back peddles, walking lunges, and a variety of other stuff.

I think I have been logging the cardio part as 60 minutes of circuit training because we will do stuff and then go back and repeat it and we are constantly going from one thing to the other. However, I don't think that is right. Maybe I should be doing only tracking it as 30 minutes of cardio I don't know.

I am so in love with my kettlebell. I use it for strength and cardio training. I get a major workout and am seeing the results. I would encourage anyone looking to take their workout up a notch, to purchase one.
