Hi chris, Thanks so much for writing The Spark. I have been on spark for awhile and lost 120 pounds in 08 and 09. I won't go into all of it but I gained it back. I did a lot of stuff on my own. I would not follow the program like I was suppose to. I would not make a collage. I could not see the purpose behind it. I did not like blogging etc. I got your book when it first came out and something clicked. I am on a 28 day streak. I made my collage and understand how important it is. I followed the steps from day one. I am eating enough, exercising enough. OH the 10 minutes hooked me again. I can do 10 minutes. Now I can do 36 minutes. I put a picture of me on my page. Unheard of for me to admit I was fat. The book has touched me so much. I have read it again, underlining everything now. I will read it again until I believe what you have wrote is true. Hi everyone!
Exercising with kettlebells is a recent trend that is here to stay, and some members who use kettlebells have asked about tracking calories burned with this popular training method.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) has published a research study on the average calorie burn for kettlebell training. Using this information, we have added "kettlebell training" to our cardio tracker so that members can better estimate how many calories they burn during their workouts.
To estimate your calorie burn and/or add kettlebell training to your Fitness Tracker, simply click the "Add Cardio" button and perform a search for "kettlebell." Enter the number of minutes you performed the exercise and then "Show Calories Burned" or "Add Exercise." It's that simple!

BOWK5150 - I agree. I also am not sure why it adds it as a cardio workout. I use the Danskin Now Calorie burner workout DVD and while it does raise my heart rate, particularly during the kettlebell throws, this is primarily more a strength workout. So on the fitness tracker I just enter my own workout as a strength exercise with total minutes. I can't fill in the reps and sets options because I am doing multiple different exercises of varying # of reps and I skip the calories burned because I don't even want to venture a guess. Previous spark articles even mention that Spark will NOT attempt to calculate calories burned on strength workouts because of too many variables. That made sense to me, so why the fitness tracker now asks for and includes number of calories burned when you enter a strength workout does not make sense. I believe this needs some adjustment. Why is it that for anyone who enters this as exercise has the same number of calories for the same amount of time. For instance; two people exercise for 30 minutes, one has a body weight of 125 the other has a weight of 190 pounds they both enter 30 minutes of kettlebell in the exercise log...both show 600 calories. This is impossible! I could see if person A was 250 pounds it's possible he could burn 600 calories in half an hour. An extremely fit person will not burn as much. Please fix this to allow proper body weight to play a part in the calculation. It is severely flawed the way it is and is vey unrealistic as a result. Report Inappropriate Comment |

I did a class one time just as a change up to my routine and loved it. I did two more beginner sessions to learn to feel comfortable with the bell before I started using it at the gym. I absolutely love it! One or two pieces of equiptment and I work my whole body. The swing of it I find very hypnotic and I can actually keep at this where the other gym machines bored me. Yay kettlebells!

This information is great! My only question is - the pdf from ACE states that the average workout burns 272 calories in 20 mins, but when I put 20 mins in fitness tracker it says I burned 400 calories - should the fitness tracker be adjusted??

Woohoo! Alright! I love my KB! Anyone interesting in trying them should check out Dragon Door .com. I use the KB Goddess DVD and it is excellent. The SheHulk emoticon is also great! She's the background for my SparkPage so now I have a signature emoticon! heehee Maybe there will be some KB SP vids soon? Even ones just demonstrating the basic moves and good form would be great. Along those same lines, I would like to be able to track boot camp classes that I take. We do an hour class (about half cardio and half weights). I have been logging the weights under strength the best that I can. Sometimes I can't find an exact match so I get as close as I can. I don't really know how to log the cardio part though. It is not just running though. We do running, shuffles, back peddles, walking lunges, and a variety of other stuff. I think I have been logging the cardio part as 60 minutes of circuit training because we will do stuff and then go back and repeat it and we are constantly going from one thing to the other. However, I don't think that is right. Maybe I should be doing only tracking it as 30 minutes of cardio I don't know. Report Inappropriate Comment |
