New features on SparkPeople's iPhone app!

Thursday, May 31, 2012

We’re excited to announce these new upgrades to our FREE SparkPeople iPhone app:

Offline Tracking: You can now track your foods, fitness, weight and water whether or not you have an internet connection on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Any tracking information you enter while offline will be synced to your account automatically once you are connected again and will be available to view on the website.

Updated Retina Display: We have also updated our graphics to support retina displays. What does that mean, exactly? Well, seeing is believing! The new retina display allows you to see all the functions of this free app more clearly--whether you are looking at text or graphics.

Click here to download these updates now for your iPhone!

Have a Blackberry or Android? Check out our FREE applications for these devices at www.sparkpeople.com/mobile-apps.asp.

I purchased the $3.99 app for my phone, then yesterday got a new phone and had to purchase the app again. It worked fine last night. Today I decided to get the app for my new iPad and again had to purchase the app. It crashes immediately when it opens and now the app on my new phone also won't work.

So far I have spent about $12 and the app won't work on either my phone (iPhone 5c) or my iPad.

Is there a fix out there?

Help!!!

I just want to throw this out there for all you who are complaining about the app price tag. The founder of spark people has poured nearly six million dollars into the site to provide the best possible content for free. Unfortunately, the costs of running such a highly effective free service is not cheap. Things like the app, the books, the fitness tracker, and the ads are to help offset the costs of the company. They don't offset enough to where sparkpeople can function without the founder still pouring in cash. He wants a healthier america, and he's been trying to help create that. Like all companies though, it needs to be able to stand on its own two feet. Extra's and premium services cost money for that purpose. If its really a big deal, don't spend the money and use your web browser to put in the details. If you do choose to buy the app, make sure you have internet access otherwise the app won't track anything. Web based interface = internet required. Its a great app and I don't see this being a logical reason to leave spark people.

As a side note, I wonder if anyone reads this comments. Looking through them all you can tell when the app changed. When it was free all kinds of good stuff once it turned to a pay app,not good posts and people leaving the site. Very sad.

Ok, I was just checking to make sure I didn't do something wrong. I got a new iPhone and wanted to add the sparkpeople app on to it. That's when I found out a out the new price tag! Very disappointing. In addition, from what I've read here and on the App Store page, it's not very good. I know this is a business and I have taken that into consideration when trying to read articles with ads constantly popping up, but I do believe I'll have to search for a new app for tracking food and fitness. I know I can still go to the website to track for free, but I wonder how much longer that will last. I did have sparkcoach for $8 a month, but have stopped that. I realized the only reason I used it was to get the extra 25 points a day. Not a good reason to spend nearly $100 a year. You'd think that with all the sales from books, videos, other store items, and ads that SparkGuy could've let us have this one for free. Sparkpeople could offer the old style app for free and an enhanced version at a price, like many other companies. Again, very disappointed.

Womp womp, downloaded the app despite the pricetag in an effort to get the stuff from my older version of the app to sync with my account on the website. Not only did I spend $4.00 on what basically the same app, but none of my food/fitness/weight tracking from the last few months transferred over? Better tech, ya'll - huge bummer.

Also very disappointed that this app is no longer free. I probably would've paid $1.99 or so but $3.99 is WAY overpriced. So very sad...switched to Lose It! App, free. emoticon

I'm not paying 3.99 for the app for my iPhone so have switched to my fitness pal. Disappointed that I've had to change as I really enjoy the layout and features of the online sparkpeople site but when you are covered in advertisements and then trying to charge your supporters it's extremely disappointing especially when there are a number of free apps out there. Another lost member :(

You've lost a member since it is too time consuming to track my food and fitness to sparkpeople online and then again on a FREE app for my phone. emoticon

I have been using the App for my iPhone for quite some time-but the last time it was updated, the syncing mode would come on even when I had internet service and it would "stick" there, and would not allow me to enter anything. I have had to go in and delete SP App 3x and reinstall it...not sure why that has been happening, but hope you are able to fix that problem. I read in another blog on SP that other people were having the same problem with theirs.
I like the APP and it's handy when I'm not near a computer to keep logging in food and fitness.

I have my iPhone set for large font accessibility for low vision, and sometimes SparkPeople doesn't play nice with that, especially in their haste to shove all the advertising down my throat. Also, the big banner advertising the various SP iPhone apps? How do I turn that completely off? I've already downloaded every SparkPeople iPhone app that there is!!

Updated version of iPhone Tracker available - problems fixed

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

Hi everyone

Last week we released an updated version of our iPhone Diet & Fitness Tracker application, but after release we released some members were having technical issues. We submitted a fix to Apple right away, and they approved and made available the corrected version last night.

So for everyone, whether you had trouble or not, you can now download the updated version. You can go to "Updates" on your App Store on your phone, or also go to www.sparkpeople.com/iphone on your phone to get the update.

We'll post more soon on the new features available with this update!

Regarding the update, I notice one thing that is kind of annoying. When you do a food search, click on the food you select from the list, and decide not to use that particular selection and go back to to pick another, the keyboard pops back up, so you keep having to "hide" it to see the same list again. Can you put it back the way it was before, when the only time the keyboard popped up was if you started typing in the search box? One other thing that has been there since the beginning: When you are entering your food for the day and select "breakfast," "lunch," "dinner," or "snack," there are about 20 of each from which to choose. We only need one of each to select. emoticon

New design to Start page launched today

Thursday, April 26, 2012

Hi everyone,

As you may have noticed, we have a slightly updated design to our "Start" page where you are taken after logging into SparkPeople. The overall functionality and all the links are the same. However, we did an extensive amount of testing the page with both new and experienced members to find some things that were not as intuitive as we would like. We also added a small "Hide" link by each section so you can hide sections if you don't use them.

As part of this, we slightly changed the "navigation" links at the top of the site (My Trackers, Healthy Lifestyle, etc). We used to have a 2nd row of links, but these were redundant with the "dropdown" links you get when putting your mouse over the navigation. Again, this was done to simplify the site.

Here's a new tutorial video that points out all the key features of the Start page. It's a great thing to watch whether you're a long-time member or a new one, plus it'll point out all the new features of our redesign.

If you have any problems or questions, please let us know here.

Thanks!

Please help, if you can. I have been using this site for some time now. My daughter uses another site that she said is much easier. The other site categorizes the food into groups from the favorites. Not the groupings like Sparkpeople, that we make up ourselves. She has large groupings such as meat, dairy, veggies etc. etc. Example -- when I put in my food ( not all starts with the food group name like bread or meat) it may start with a brand and then I have to remember that brand and sort through the list to find it. She said her site sorts it all by food groups and then she can find her favorites within that. Much easier. Am I just not finding how or where this is? I have made up a few of my own groupings --ie. salads that I always fix the same or my breakfast meals. But she is talking about the favorites, being in their own individual groups. Much easier, she said. I hate to switch sites now, if Sparkpeople has this. Thanks -Evelyn

there is something that drives me nuts. when you pick a food from the favorites, you select the servings, then the portion size then the meal time. if a person is not careful the quantity gets reset because you need to choose the potion size first, then the quantity. it's frustrating because it is time consuming to fix. also, it would be nice if you could do a family thing. i had to enter everything twice and that is time consuming, esp if i make a mistake (hubby is computer illiterate so i enter his)
otherwise i love love love this site! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I liked the second menu below the drop downs, I do a lot of my surfing on a tablet and the second menu bar was much more convenient than trying to do the drop downs.

I miss the red line graphs in the Goals and Progress section, but I bet I will get used to it. Thanks for working to constantly make improvements for us!

My favorite tab was the Health News, I miss having it on the page.

I prefer the new layout as it looks more 'up-to-date' and 'modern'. However, I do agree with some of the points made about the old layout:

The 'My Goals and Progress' does seem to 'yell' out at you - Maybe you could reduce the font size or add the bars back. I personally prefered the bars and I think they would suit the new layout design a lot better!

I really like the new changes. I find it more user friendly. I like that I don't have to go into nutrition to see how many calories I have left for the day. I like that I have the options to hide the boxes as well! emoticon emoticon

Sorry, but I prefer the old setup. I miss the "Spark Points" tab, and I thought the old format was more user-friendly. Also, if someone is standing over my shoulder I don't like the way the new Start page yells out my weight and my goal. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but sometimes change isn't necessary.

The new set-up is more streamlined with less redundancy in the menus.. I remember feeling kind of overwhelmed by the site when I first joined Sparkpeople, and I really think the more streamlined look will help new members navigate better. The graphics are kind of 'in your face'.. but I'm guessing we'll all adjust soon enough, and then not remember that it was any other way. The one thing I wish had been added.. a link for our personal Sparkpage in the menu bar. If you're on your Start page the link is always right there and easy to get to.. but if you're on one of the other Spark web pages, you kind of have to scroll and hunt to get to it. Would be nice if that had been part of the streamlining. :)

I liked the older version much better, this one is too big. The goals and progress bars were way nicer to look at, it's very bland and boring now!

I would like to thank you for all you are doing. I have only used the site for four days now but I already feel so much better. I am now very aware of what I am eating and how much or little I exercise. Very seldom do you find a person like you that will do so much to help others and especially for free. I am truly amazed. Because of what you do, I am on the road to being a happier and healthier person. Thank you and God Bless. Debbie emoticon

I'd really like to, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to take on the financial commitment, and I don't think it would be right to take advantage of a free week knowing I wouldn't be able to subscribe. Even worse if I really liked it but had to cancel. Sorry.

The idea is a good one, just not for me.
