Food Tracker Enhancement - Add Custom Meal Categories

We launched an often requested enhancement to the myNutrition page today. You can now add extra meal categories for tracking food! Many members have requested this because they eat more than one snack a day. So now you can add as many other meal categories as you'd like.

To add new categories:
1) Go to your myNutrition page
2) At the bottom of your day's entries, click the button that reads "Add/Edit My Extra Meal Categories"
3) You can then click to add a new category, and type in any name that you'd like (Snack 2, Mid-morning Snack, Morning Break, etc)

After adding a new category, you can edit or delete the categories, plus you can change their order at the bottom of your page. Please note that when you add new categories they will always show up at the bottom of your page, under the normal categories.

We hope this makes the Food Tracker an even better tool to help you learn to eat better and reach your health goals!

  One thing to note is that if you use the iPhone/iPod application, the calories of the new categories will count towards your "Calories eaten today" the 'Today' page on the application. However,the categories, and the items under them, will not show on the 'Food' page.

    This is great. I have yogurt during my break at work. I also take a cut up apple to munch on while working. Having to put those amid my later snacks made a very lopsided list. Now, if we could rearrange the order of all of the meals.

    thanks, but it sure took awhile! i've been asking for this for nearly a year since I eat 6 meals a day. I just ignore the top section and named my meals meal 1, meal 2, etc. I now wish there was a way to get rid of the breakfast, lunch dinner sections.

  I think this feature of Sparkpeople is worth it's weight in gold (not food). If I didn't use any other part of SP this is the greatest. Really opens your eye as to what you are actually eating and the calories. Thanks

Have you ever given thought to a calorie count down.
Having my total calories added up for me is terrific.
But seeing how many calories are still available would be nice, too.

    Thanks for adding this feature. It really helps to evaluate your eating when it doesn't look like you just had one big snack! Plus it helps to identify trouble spots - such as late afternoon snacking - to find new strategies for improvement. Spark People is wonderful!

    This addition of extra meals is great as I'm diabetic. I send my report to a dietican and we need to connect the snacks to the time of day and my meter readings. I'm pretty new to Sparkpeople anyway, but this just made my day to read what that means

Just a note; spark people mynutrition is the easiest and most complete diet record I have seen.
Others are more complicated, less complete food listings...therefore more difficult and less likely to be used.

    This is just another perfect example to ABSOLUTELY LOVE SP!!! Like so many others here that have said, "everyone is so gracious and considerate”...they say it because everyone really, really is! I have only been with SP for a week and can already see the change in me and my whole attitude about health and fitness; it is amazing! With the support that is given here from everyone, managing our weight might become something that just comes naturally.

    Love this! I added "Afternoon Snack," "Evening Snack," and "Unplanned Grazing." I like my nutrition page to show me the truth about my choices -- this will help so much! Thank you! Thank you! SP ROCKS!!

BTW, I added all the information on my daily vitamin as a manually-added favorite food. Then I just choose it as part of my breakfast. I like this method of tracking my vitamin because it adds the info to the day's report on nutrients.

    This is a great idea. I snack mid morning and in the afternoon and in the evening. (trying to eat smaller meals) Right now when I look at snacks I think in terms of eating it all at once. Great to have the separation.

    That sounds fantastic!! I will have to play with that! Can you move the categories around on an individual day basis, or does it stay constant across days? It would be nice to have a mid-morning snack on one day but maybe an afternoon and an evening snack on another without a morning one.

I agree completely with NancyAnne65 too! I am trying really hard to motivate myself on my vitamins and its difficult.

    THATS GREAT! Now I dont have to see a very long snack list...
now if only I can get the routine Indian food ( chapati/roti, daals, pickles ) listed on the nutition tracker... that would be HEAVEN!!! right now I enter each food into the recipe cal counter, but that does get tedious as the pages dont open up fast.

    An excellent idea Nicole. I rejoined SP after couple of months gap. Am currently logging my meals & exercise on a UK based site as it relates more to stuff I buy and cook in England. But I still very much value all the features & advice on SP. It is more fun than the other site & the social side is far more varied with people from all walks of life to contact. I am also more likely to join in with your 10 minute workouts at my computer than to do an exercise video on the TV! THANKS

New weight ticker option - shows weight goal vs. current/start weight

We launched an enhancement to our weight loss tickers today where you now have the option to not show your actual weight, but instead your goal. If you go to Edit SparkPage and to your ticker section, you will see 2 options:

1 - Show my starting weight, goal weight, and current weight (example starting 180, goal 160, current weight 170)
2 - Show my total pounds to lose and pounds lost (example starting 0, goal 20, pounds lost 10)

So basically option 1 used to be the only option (and if you make no changes how your ticker will appear), and you can now change to option 2 if you'd like.

    Yeah, it won't let me change it! grrr I didn't want to show my weight and goal weight this time, just do a 20 pound ticker like he described above but it won't let me change it. I should be able to put any amount on the ticker without it telling me it's not good or whatever. It doesn't know what I am trying to do.

    hey guys...this particular issue was driving me nuts!! u have to go back tot he weight measurements page, and re-enter the all the weights in kilograms or pounds...whichever one you prefer.

    I have the same issue as Serene.One except I want mine to show in pounds and it shows in kgs - and it doesn't even do the right conversion!! I've lost 20 or so lbs to date and it shows I've lost 20 or so kgs - I can only wish for this!

    Finding and updating ones weight loss on this site is a real pain as is trying to get back to doing a ticker once you first set up. It would be nice if when you put your weight in weekly etc., that it would show you progress on your main page so that you could see your progress with out using a ticker for everyone else to see. Instead we have a chart we have to find and redo the dates etc. This is a big drawback to this site. I really like sparkpeople but really my weight should be as easy for me to track and see as is my water intake.

    There really needs to be an easier way to change your current weight. I finally found it last week thanks to the help of my 13 yr old son and of course I can't find it again! It should be a function you can change on the "edit" page which would make the most sense to me. I have read the FAQ on it and it doesn't help in finding the right section to make this change. I agree with the member that said way too much time is spent trying to find this.

    Weekly weight changes are done on your start page under the My tools tab and scrolling down to click on the 'weigh in' of the left side of the 'start' page. This weekly weigh in report will make your ticker move weekly.

    This sight is so exciting i can't tell you how happy you have made me! I am 58 years old and all my arteries are over 80% blocked but i won't give up! Finding sparkpeople has give me hope and tools to work with that are super! I might not lose weight but i am not depressed anymore and am eating well! I know i have lost at least 5 lbs since december and i have cut down to 1200 calories aday the 1st of March and getting weighted the 30th of March ! If i don't lose i will cut down to 1000 calories aday but no lower! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SITE AND THE CHANCE TO FEEL ALIVE AGAIN! I WILL BE HERE AS LONG AS I CAN AFFORD INTERNET !   Well I love the idea but my page will not change any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

    I think it's great. My starting weight and my currant weight are right there in my face.
I was embarrassed at first. But now I'm so proud of myself!
Seeing other people posting their weight tickers shows me that I'm not all alone afterall.

    I LOVE the new feature. I'm NOT shy about my starting weight. But, the new option focuses on what I've accomplishedd, while the original seemed to focus on how far I still have to go. If others see it another way, they have the choice to use the original version. Personalization & customization are one of the many wonderful things about SP!

    I think it is a bad idea, because one of the main things for success is "getting REAL" and acknowledging what you weigh and doing something about it. Many of the people who come to SP haven't been on a scale in several years and when they do get a starting weight it is a SHOCK. I've read many of their pages saying how they had to go to the doctor and when they were weighed they couldn't believe what the scale said. I think it is good to be honest with other Sparkers where you are starting out at and where you are going.
But, I'm sure if they actually do lose the weight, they will want to brag about where they were to begin with, so we will find out.

    THANK YOU!!! it has NOTHING to do with being shy for me...i am a teacher and there are many of my students on here, as well as my own kids and family members.
Frankly, i dont WANT them to know my weight! it wouldnt bother me at all if i was anonymous as most are but with a picture posted, etc, plus sharing this wonderful site with everyone its just none of their business!!
I dont walk down the street proclaiming my weight....and that would be exactly the same if i posted it here.
So, my heartfelt thanks for this option. I've been doing it on my own thanks to lilbitfit's instructions.
Plus, its actually a BIGGER shock to see how far you have to goal, for me anyhow!!!

  Great idea! Many new members are shy about sharing their weight with others. It takes awhile on SP to get up the courage to say, "This is where I am and this is where I want to be!" Maybe not looking at that scale each day as they post will give members the incentive to think Healthy Lifestyle and rid themselves of the Diet mentality! THANKS!
