A Carnivors Vegan Experiment!

Wednesday, June 05, 2013

So a few weeks ago my boyfriend and I were talking about trying out different diets and seeing which ones worked for us and experimenting with different lifestyles. Both of us have been on an up and down weight roller coaster for the majority of our lives and we thought it would be interesting to see how different diets, cultures, and lifestyles affected the mind and body.

About 3-days ago we started on a Vegan diet. This is not going to be a lifestyle choice we make for a long period of time but we wanted to see the affects it has on the body. It is only day 3 but I am feeling great! I have more energy then I usually do and I don't feel sick or bloated. Our plan in the beginning was to try out all sorts of different things so obviously I am not going to stay on this diet but if I weren't doing this then I would definitely consider giving up meat and dairy products. We have been blogging about our journey on our new website, if you are interested in a more in-depth look at what we have been doing from a girl and guy perspective.

Today was a beautiful day and I found myself to have a lot more energy then normal. We decided to go for a hike and after that I had baseball. I think this vegan thing is doing some pretty good things for my body. I am feeling very motivated to get over this plateau that I'v been stuck in and I am very excited to see how the next week goes for me!

It is always great to experiment, different ways suit different people. That soup looks really delicious. Whoever said vegetables can be boring never tried going vegetarian

It was delicious! I just used low sodium vegetable broth, a lot of mixed veggies, mushrooms, red onion, garlic, mixed beans and spices. I don't have an actual recipe because I just made it up as I went and threw things in that I thought would taste delicious. It was very good, very filling and I had a lot left over for the next day too!

Getting back on track!

Soo, falling off the wagon is something that many people trying to lose weight do but I am not going to let that happen. Everybody can hold me to that, I will reach my goal!

Last year I started out strong, losing 60lbs from Jan-June. Once the summer hit I started dating a new guy and going out a little more, eating a little more and working out a little less. I havent gained any weight but I havnet lost any either. I would say I was going to eat healthy and something would come up.
Summer brought bonfires and stag and does and themeparks so I used baseball and a nightly run/walk to keep everything in check.
Fall brought me fairs, festivals, and comfort foods. At this point I was lucky I have an active job which is why I maintained a stable weight.
December, was the worst. Food everywhere! At work there was a constant buffett of delicious foods and decadent deserts for a solid two weeks but yet I still havent gained any weight, though I havent lost either.

Soo back to today. At the beginning of January I started eating healthy again. It stuck to healthy eating very well last year and I will do that once again to reach my goal weight and then maintain it. I have an active job so that helps me out a lot and I do enjoy working out. Last year after I had lost 30lbs and started to feel more comfortable, I started taking an interval boxing class. I am still enjoying my boxing classes every Monday night. Fitness has never been an issue for me. I can run longer and train harder then most of my "skinny" friends.

Since fitness isnt the problem in maintaining a healthy weight, we all know what I have the most difficulty with. FOOD! I have been addicted to food since I was young. I was teased growing up and it brought me comfort. Now I know I need to use certain tools to help me in my weight loss. I keep an up-to-date and accurate food journal.

I have many goals for this year but when it comes to losing and then maintaining my weight my goals are to..

1. Keep an accurate and up-to-date food diary
2. Drink water!
3. Make healthy food choices
4. Designate one "cheat" meal so I dont feel deprived
5. Reach my goal weight (-50)
6. Tone! I dont want to have a skinny body, I want to have a fit body
7. Stay fit with my son, and teach him to make healthy food choices
8. Run! I want to start jogging on a daily basis once spring comes and in the meantime I will go to the gym and use my own elliptical.
9. Keep taking pictures!
10. No fast food, if I am in a bind I will find a healthy alternative like going to a grocery store and buying a premade salad.

So those are my goals. I have lost -60 so far and am over the half way mark! I promise I will be a success story!

Half way there. -50lbs (with pictures!)

Wednesday, May 02, 2012

I have had quite the struggle with weight my whole life. Deemed the fat girl in school I was always worried about how I looked, what I was eating, and what my clothes looked like on me causing me to change over and over again before I went out; something I still do to this day. I have been a Spark member since 2006 and I actually was at my healthy weight but unfortunately after going through a rough time I gained it all back and then some, reaching my highest weight at 250lbs. Working at a fast-food restaurant defiantly did not help especially since we were allowed to eat for FREE! I convinced myself that I would save money if I just ate there and it would be easier to pack one less lunch. I packed on 50lbs in the year I was working there and living with my ex. I remember feeling like I was hopeless. I would ask my ex for motivation to lose weight and he would call me names (he said that was his motivation; an ex for a good reason) and play with my tummy.

The day I left him I vowed to lose weight. I wanted to feel good about myself again and the one thing I learned about being in that relationship is that I lost myself and needed to find me again. I finally wanted to do this for me and no one else. I mean donít get me wrong it is very nice proving to the people that told me I couldnít lose weight and even nicer hearing the compliments but when it comes down to it I want this so I can be healthy, have energy, and not have aches. I mean common Iím only 24, it shouldnít be a chore to do simple things. Throughout my journey, so far (since November) there have been ups and downs. I went through a couple hard months, after my breakup and having my grandmother pass away. I have gone through weeks where I have lost weight and weeks where I have gained but I just try to forget about the past and not let it bother me. It I have a bad day, who cares it was one day it wonít affect me all that much, go for a walk and eat right tomorrow!

Today I have reached my 50lb mark. I have pushed through plateaus and I am finally at a point where I donít feel ashamed about my body. People are noticing my efforts and it feels great! I get cravings occasionally but for the most part I can control them and my favorite is fat-free frozen yoghurt so a little bit of that can usually satisfy. Exercise is also a big part of my life now. I go to interval boxing 2 times a week, do cardio, and I have recently started running now that I am becoming more comfortable.

My goal right now is to keep up with the running and healthy living so that I can run in the marathon this fall.
