Hellllloooo September!!! (Goals)

Monday, September 01, 2014

I've tried to keep my goals simple and attainable for September. Most of these goals have been goals before, but that's okay. I keep pressing! LOL

- Earn 1000 Fitness Minutes Trophy
- 200,000 steps
- At least 64 oz of water daily
- No fast food, junk food or baked goods
- Track all food/drink (when nutrition data is available)
- Track exercise
- Cardio 3x's weekly (Mon/Thur/Sat)
- Strength Training 2x's weekly (Tues/Fri)

I also have some non-health-related goals that I'm working on for September as well. I'll just keep those to myself, as this is not the forum for that. But, I'm excited! :-)

HELLOOOOO SEPTEMBER!!!!

Great goals! I have some personal ones too that I'll keep to myself, but sometimes I can't keep them. I love to share, but then again. Everything isn't so good to share. Thanks for adding me. I wish you the best!
Let's do this!

Brief Update: What I've Been Up To...

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

Hello Sparkfriends!

I haven't really been active on SP that much lately. I'm sure I'll get back into it at some point. But, honestly, I seem to not have that many active sparkfriends, so I'm not really feeling as much support on here as I used to. And, without the support, it's kind of just a personal blog space. I've really been finding support on Instagram and in a Facebook group that I joined last month. I share my fitness goals, motivations, achievements, and pictures on the special fitness account that I created. If anyone wants to follow me, it's: the_vee_project. But, I have to say, I'm finding the most support and determination within myself. That's new for me. LOL

I'm doing great. I'm definitely staying on track. I've been concentrating on fitness and keeping my activity level up. I can't report any weight loss/gain because I've not been on the scale. I'm pretty much avoiding the scale because I'm on such a fitness high right now. I just don't need any distractions or discouragement. So, I'm trying not to have my every victory be tied to the scale.

I'm participating in a couple of fitness challenges this month. One is an 100-mile challenge that I joined mid-month with a lady from my church. So, I have a lot of miles to get in before the month of July ends. It's tough. But, I'm determined to get it done. All miles (walking, running, elliptical, bike, etc.) count.

I'm also participating in the below wall sit challenge this month with my sister.

greatist.com/discover/july-challenge
-wall-sit-2014?utm_source=Sailthru&utm
_medium=email&utm_term=Greatist%20Dail
y&utm_campaign=Greatist%20Daily%202014
%20-%20Manual&utm_content=Final

I joined that one late as well. But, when I joined I just started at Day 1, so that I would have the same opportunity to build up my endurance as others who started the challenge. I'm on (Friday, July 4) right now. I can say that I'm getting stronger. I remember my legs shaking when I did the sit for 45 secs. Now, I'm up to 01:15. It's been a good challenge.

I've not been using my fitness or nutrition trackers (apps or SP website). I can get a little obsessive about that kind of stuff. So, I'm kind of just using the plate as a guide (half veggies, 1/4 protein, 1/4 carb). I've not had a single green smoothie since I finished the cleanse. LOL That was a lot of greens! LOL But, I still would LIKE to try to have a green smoothie every now and then as a replacement for one meal. I've just not been motivated to do so as of yet. These days, I'm not looking at a clock (timing how often) or a scale (measuring how much) or anything to determine when and how much I am/should eat. I'm just eating when I'm hungry and until satisfied. I'm actually listening to my body. It's just becoming natural and more a part of my life.

I really think this turnaround happened because of the green smoothie cleanse. After I completed that cleanse, my tastebuds and cravings and food desires, just changed. I feel more in control than I ever have been in my life. I'm in a good place.

I joined as many sparkteams as I could, so that my most recent blog would show up to as many people as possible. I only joined teams that were relevant to me, but I'm sure it's over 100. If you do this, you are pretty much guaranteed comments every time you post. It might also be helpful to add a few people from here on facebook or skype and try to instant message every few days to touch base. I think I would struggle to keep up with someone on sparkpeople alone.

Good luck!

Love your blog post and I may do that wall sit just for personal goals! I don't do any other form of social media but Spark so I am consistently on here. Facebook is way too distracting and I know pretty foolish people who use FB for the wrong thing LOL so I AVOID!!

Thanks for sharing you gave me some pretty good ideas, this wall sit and staying away from the scale (UGH!!)

I think you are totally right and I need to stop focusing on the numbers. I want to refocus on feeling like an athlete! I am sorry you feel you have little support here. I am here for you! good luck!!

Great post - always nice to get updates from you. It's so important that we each figure out what's the plan that will be most effective for us. Glad you've landed on a few things that are working well for you. Thanks for the wall-sitting challenge. I have been doing a version of that for my physical therapy but now I can operationalize it with a chart! Yay! Have a great rest of the week!

My Experience: 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse (JJ Smith)

Friday, June 27, 2014

How many of you have heard of this detox cleanse?? The author was recently on the Steve Harvey Show and The View.

Well, after I saw her on Steve Harvey, I said I would buy the book for my husband for Father's Day. He's been drinking smoothies since the beginning of the year and it's really allowed him to get more fruit and veggies into his diet that he's ever eaten. I've seen positive changes, but I see that he still uses a lot more fruit than he does veggies. So, I wanted to help him go to the next level. But, I was interested in it for myself as well. LOL I had to order it off Amazon because it's sold out in every bookstore!!

Before I added it to his gift bag, I read it myself in secret and I thought that I really wanted to try it for myself. So, the Monday after Father's Day, I went shopping for all the fruit and veggies that I would need for the first 5 days of the cleanse. Every day you just follow the smoothie recipe that's contained in the book. The ingredients are meant to facilitate cleansing of the liver and colon, which also will help jumpstart weight-loss efforts.

I began the cleanse on June 17th, and finished up the 10-days yesterday.

Well, after only 10 days of infusing my body with an onslaught of nutrition by way of green leafy veggies, fruit, nuts, fiber, healthy carbs and protein... I feel FANTASTIC!!! I'm down 9 lbs!!! I went from 194 (6/17) to 185 (6/27). I didn't take measurements, but my clothes tell me I'm down several inches as well. My skin is absolutely radiant! I feel light and fluffy and my sugar and carb cravings are absolutely gone. I'm actually craving more fruits and veggies.

Some days (depending on the greens used) were more challenging than others, and I have to admit the smoothie did not taste so good on those days (for me). But, they were certainly effective in cleansing.

The cleanse is meant to be followed for ONLY 10-days straight. It's a cleanse. It's not a diet. So, it's supposed to jumpstart your weight loss efforts. But, as a way of maintaining healthy weight or continuing to lose, you could drink 1 or 2 GREEN smoothies as a replacement for any meal and then eat 1 or 2 regular clean meals. That you could do indefinitely, provided you just alternate your greens. You, supposedly, could lose the healthy 1-2 lbs weekly by doing that.

I'm not sure that I'm going to do that. I did have one smoothie today as my lunch but that's because I didn't know what I want to have. LOL After not having to really think about that for 10 days, it was kind of hard to decide. LOL But, I did have sauteed spinach and an egg for breakfast this morning. For dinner, I had kale and some baked chicken wingettes that I made. I've continued to have over 64 oz of water daily.

In addition, there is an excellent Facebook support community of folks who are doing the full cleanse (3 smoothies and 2 snacks) and/or the modified cleanse (2 smoothies and 1 meal). The author, herself, is a part of the community and interacts with everyone on there.

The testimonies and pictures shared by people who are doing the cleanse are so encouraging and motivating.

So, I'm just sharing my experience with it just in case any of my sparkfriends wanted to try it.

March Roundup (Hits and Misses)

Monday, March 31, 2014

In March, I set the following goals:

- 1000 Fitness Minutes Trophy
- Strength Training 3x/week
- Water 8 cups/day
- Cardio 16x/month (4x/week)
- Burn 7000 Calories
- Step 200,000

So, how'd I do?

FITNESS MINUTES: Well, I gained a 2000 Fitness Minutes Trophy this month! Yay! That goal was met!

STRENGTH TRAINING: I only did strength training about 4x this entire month. So, I still have some work to do in that area... as usual. I don't know why strength training is such a struggle. But, I'm determined to do it with some consistency. I'm going to keep trying until I figure it out.

WATER: I didn't even track my water. Though I started off the month pretty strong in this area, I kind of dropped the ball midway through.

CARDIO: I didn't make my 16x's this month. But, I did get in 12x's. I'll get it next month.

BURN: My SP report says I burned 12,022 calories. So technically, I guess I met that goal. However, that includes FitBit entries. When I set the goal, I didn't even know I could sync my FitBit with SP. So these activity minutes I get through FitBit for just getting steps in, was not expected. Sooooo, I went through my fitness tracker and just added up my formal exercise calories burned and the total was 5,356. No bad at all. Because I really want to know my formal exercise cardio burned, I think I won't sync my FitBit with SP next month.

STEPS: I almost made my goal! LOL I got in 184,154 steps this month. I know I could have made my goal if not for a few days when I was laying in the bed pretty much all day doing absolutely nothing. Soooo, next month it's ON! I'm going to make that goal! I'm thankful for my 10K a Day team challenge which starts back up in April. I've repeated my 200,000 a month goal!

So, that's my March roundup!!

I'm happy for another chance in April to make those goals a reality! Let's Go!!

I love the idea of the steps-in-a-month challenge. I'm charging up my Fitbit for the first time since the end of November, and will probably start wearing it instead of my Spark activity tracker, which I'm not sure I really like...

My New Favorite App: Lose It! (short blog)

Saturday, March 29, 2014

Last Saturday when I was watching the weekend Today Show, Jenna Wolfe spotlighted an app called, Lose It!, stating that she thought it was the best app out there for tracking and weight loss. Well, I can't attest to that since I've not tried a lot of them. But, I can say that it's the best one that I've used so far. It's absolutely great!

For me, what makes the app so great is it's EASE OF USE!

When you first download and open the app, it'll ask how much you weigh, your goal weight and how much you want to lose per week. From that it'll give you a target amount of calories that you need to eat per day to accomplish that.

I said that I wanted to lose 2 lbs per week and it gave me a calorie consumption goal of 1,145. I thought that was kind of low because mine has always been a range of 1200-1550 with Sparkpeople. But, it's been fine. But, it's been a week, and I've lost exactly two pounds! I hope that trend continues for next week.

And the thing I love the most is the food tracking component. You can actually just scan the bar code of foods and it'll automatically brings them up in your tracker and all you have to do is change the amount/measurement. That saves me a lot of time and I love that aspect of it.

The exercise tracker is okay. I don't like that it doesn't have inclines for walking intensity; but it's cool. As soon as you exercise, it automatically adjusts the amount of calories that you can take in for that day, allowing you to eat more. I love that instant feedback. I feel like it's probably underestimating my calories burned. It's always lower than what it shows in Sparkpeople. But that's fine. I'd rather it underestimate the calories burned and I stay in my range for eating than if it overestimated the calories burned and I went over.

So, that's the wonderful app I wanted to tell you all about! Give it a try! :-)

I have a friend that was using that app to lose weight and she really liked it, too, though she said she thought it got to where it detoured into having her eat too little over time, and her weight loss plateaued when it did. It sounds a lot like My Fitness Pal - you put in your weight and how much you want to lose, as well as your non-exercise activity level, and it gives you your calorie level for the day, which increases with exercise. I think it also has a bar code component, though I've never used it because I don't eat a lot straight from a package. Plus MFP has all the local foods and stuff built in, which makes all the recipe building I do super easy. I've enjoyed it and found it useful, and it sounds like Lose It would be super useful too! This is awesome! :) Congrats on your first week, too. :)
