Man in the moon

Sunday, June 23, 2013

Did you see it last night. It came up early and even though it was still somewhat daylight, the moon was so easy to see. It rose in the east above the mountains and by 9p.m. was high enough to get a good photos. And since this is the biggest moon of the year due to how close it was to earth last night. I have tried for years with my old cameras to get good shots of the moon but seems it just hasn't worked. Well now with this new camera with 40X lens, I got a really good close up shot. I keep it on auto as don't know how to do the manual settings yet but it's auto focus will home in on the main feature in your shot. I found if I took photos with the mountains or trees in the background that it would focus on what was closest and the sky would be light. But if I zoomed in and held the focus on just the moon, I could darken the sky enough to get a great picture of the moon.

First going to show you a really eerie photo of the moon I took at 2a.m. on Friday night. I woke at that time for my usual night run to the bathroom. The moon was shining in our window at the top of the mirror. Being half asleep I ran and got my camera and took this photo. Now you are going to wonder what that hand is holding the moon. Well I have this small collection of ceramic, wood and metal hands and I keep it on a ledge under this window. I thought it really took a unique picture. I'm a little weird so really liked this photo. You can even see the spiderwebs on the outside of the window which made it even eerier.

Now here is the shot I got last night when I zoomed in around 9pm. Can't you see the man in the moon smiling.

More photos from around the homeplace

Saturday, June 22, 2013

This year we have grown a lot of beans and peas in our garden. We had ideas to make a 3 bean salad pickle mix. The problem with trying to do that is your green beans come off before the seed beans. But this is what we are trying to do. We made a pickle brine from white vinegar, salt, sugar and water. We had picked all our burgundy green beans. We were hoping that we could keep the purple color to make the mix interesting but when heated they turn green. This picture shows right after we added the hot brine to the jars. The purple still shows at the bottom of the jar. We have stored these in the refrigerator and when the seed beans come off we will add all together with onion and then water bath can them. You don't need to pressure if they are a vinegar mix. Just a water bath is all that is needed.

This is a wide shot looking down across part of our yard to the garden.

This is a scarlet tanger bird. I took this shot by zooming in to the top of our biggest oak tree where he was singing his heart out. We have this pair that has nested near this year. I've seen glimses of them in other years but this year it seems they have become either many in numbers or just friendlier than normal. They come up on our porch and don't seem to be afraid of people. They are a tiny bit bigger than a cardinal and don't have the top knot on their head. Their wings are a reddish brown. I had a hard time taking this photos as zooming that far in takes a steady hand or tripod. But I finally managed.

I love looking at spider webs. I don't like walking into them or really like the spiders much. But I do leave them alone as know they perform a needed function in the bug world and that is eating other nasty bugs. But spider webs are so unique and lovely to look at and like our finger prints...no 2 are alike. I plan to get many more shots of spider webs this year.

You have a lot of Green Beans. DH didn't plant them this year, but our Tomatoes and Bell Peppers are looking good. What a beautiful bird. We don't have them here. That's an interesting spider web. emoticon

Photos from my new camera

Friday, June 21, 2013

I have really been enjoying this new camera. It sure takes photos much clearer and nicer than my old one. So thought I would share some.

This is Fredrick VonBlackballs. (Freddy) My name here on SP is taken from his name but in a little nicer way.
He has always been so hard to take a picture of as he is in constant motion. He has huge ears and makes his small body look smaller. When the grass gets high all you can see when he runs is his antenna ears.

This is Freddy and his playmate Lulu. Lulu is a very loving dog and would love to be a house dog. She is so gritty and not scared of anything.

Gracie is our little princess house dog. Usually when I take photos of her the flash makes her eyes a spooky green. She is so spoiled.

All 3 of our dogs are rescue dogs. Gracie is a Chihuahua rat terrier mix and someone had her in a puppy mill. She has a cute docked tail (though I think docking tails is painful, she came to us this way). Freddy is a Chihuahua and was the runt of his liter and was given to 5 owners before we got him. Noone seemed to be able to house break him. He loves outside and has a heated dog house in winter so he loves his freedom here. Lulu is a multibreed or Heinz 57. She was destine to be put down. We have had our share of hybrid dog but love our rescues much more as we know we have saved their lives.

Now that I've bored you with my doggie babies I will wait and post more photos tomorrow.

New Camera

Thursday, June 20, 2013

There is something about getting a new "play toy" that will really perk you up, especially after being so sick as I was. I had an old Canon camera that wasn't that expensive and it was small and just took basic digital photos. It was a very old camera as I think I got it about the time cameras went fully digital. Well a week ago it died and was mourned over tremendously. So yesterday while doing the monthly shopping in the city and having some extra money in the account I bought a new Canon. I had told DH that I wanted a really nice one with better zoom features..well there were 2 I liked when we went shopping. This was the more expensive one. I've never owned any camera this expensive and am totally in love with it. It works similar to my old one and has auto features and the zoom lens is 40X..couldn't be happier. I can now take photos without a flash in low lights and not worry about the zombie eyes the flash sometimes show. I have a lot to learn about this camera but am so so thrilled.

Back to the walking full time and back to eating the freggies from the garden and orchard. The plums are about gone as we didn't have many this year anyway and had to wage war on the squirrels and birds. Think it will be the same with any fruit this year. Seems we have an over abundance of both critters this year. Already picking a lot of the garden and have put up 2 gallon jugs of pickled beans. When others come off we will combine and then seal the smaller pints to make a 3 bean salad type mix. We will have to buy tomatoes in another week as we lost more than half our plants but we will have enough to eat fresh...just not enough to make salsa and this year was the year to make it.

But all in all I'm back on track.

I really like the digital cameras. I have 2, one is a Canon and then a smaller Sony one. I use the smaller one most because I can easily take it with me for spur of the moment pictures. I like being able to take picture in low light without a flash.
