Day 4

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Well wasn't able to get here yesterday to do much. Was so busy and then when I found time, I couldn't get on the internet until late last night. I got on with my tablet when I got in bed and just put in my calories and did my update for the 5% challenge.

I thought I had a set back as a friend sent me a tiny box of the Whitman chocolates..the one with 4 pieces but when I put them in my calorie count I still stayed under the 1500 calories so felt so much better. But think it may have gotten me on a chocolate binge. I had a hot cocoa this morning but I've tracked the calories so it won't be as bad either. But got the chocolate tea out and will be drinking it instead now..it really helps..it is by Biglow and I have to order it online. I order a case of it, pumpkin spice and eggnog tea for the holidays. I keep some and give some as gifts as they are hard to find in stores and just as cheap to order as to find in a store and buy. I also got out my Stash tea that is almond flavored and then I have a wonderful loose tea that is jasmine. I love it in summer iced. it tastes like the teas they use in the Japanese tea gardens..and since it is a green tea, it is quite good for you in losing weight..My usual favorite is Earl Grey and I really need to get a decaf of it so I can have a cup in the evening hours. I drink it with splend and a touch of milk..I justify and track the milk as know the milk offsets in the calcium that the tea may deplete from my body.

Exercise is coming along too. I'm getting 15 minutes of core exercises each day and trying to walk. I'm still doing about 10minutes of walking in but today I will walk in place as it is pouring and due to rain for several day. I haven't gotten my yoga tape ot work yet. I don't have the spare tv and VCR set up to use..need to put that on my to-do list.

But the 5% challenge is off to a good start.

You are doing great with the exercises! Keep up the good work. Yes, we are due for a LOT of rain in the next few days.

Your tea sounds wonderful. We only recently started having "tea time" around 3:00 pm. It's a nice break in the afternoon. I would love to try some of the chocolate tea. Where do you order it online?

5% Challenge day 2

Sunday, March 18, 2012

Well today didn't go as well as before. We had 2 of the sons and their families out to eat outside..I did great until we got to the cake..splurged as it was strawberry shortcake and so topped out over my 1500 calories...not good but not going to whip myself over it. It isn't everyday that we have the kids and grandkids out and the weather is so nice. Both sons work off shore so are only home at certain times and usually not together. Oldest son is supposed to come up to visit this next week..

Anyway the day went ok really. But while I was looking around, I found a blog where they posted the goals they intend to do the next day and also if they accomplished their goals for that day..So thinking about that, think I might try to do something similar. I will list tomorrow's goals and then tomorrow will list whether I completed it.

Goals for tomorrow 3/19:
Walk 20minutes (may have to do in 2-10minute stretches)
Arm exercises (10minutes)
Begin organizing studio
Dust the house

Yes, you can't beat yourself up over your choices -- pick yourself up, move on, no regrets. Tomorrow IS another day! I do like the idea of setting up tomorrow's goals...as Scarlett O'Hara said, "Tomorrow IS another day!"

5% challenge Day1

Saturday, March 17, 2012

Well I surprised myself today. Since I have a really bad back due to the RA, I find I can only walk 10-15minute stretches. But I've been so busy today that barely got the 15 minutes in. Strangely my back wasn't hurting as bad today (warmer weather helps) so I got lots of housework done. I'm counting those minutes as exercise minutes as I worked up a sweat. So today I got a total of 30 minutes in.

Another goal today was to get 9-10 glasses of water. I never have a problem drinking water...It is just something I've always done natureally so this goal will be simple for me. Our practice run was for sleeping 8 hours and I do have problems with that but sometimes I just don't feel I need all of 8 hours. It usually averages around 7 hours a night depending on the weather changes.

I have done well with the calories today too. I kept them on the low end but not under the 1200. I'm already feeling good. Since last weekend when I started the practice run, I had lost 1lb...So will be changing my ticker tape.

I've got a bad back and arthritis in my feet. At first I could barely walk but I am finding that the more I walk, the less pain. I know there are days when it's not possible. I am so happy for you for doing what you did. Most days will be a bit easier.

(((angel hugs)))

Keep up the good work, and keep those minutes coming! Have you investigated other fitness options that work with your RA besides walking? I did a little googling and there is lots of information out there, and it sounds like exercise is one of the best things you can do for your RA, too!

Here's a neat slideshow I found with exercise ideas.

Maybe you can find something new that you love and suits your current abilities! Tai chi is the first one I'd try, if it were me, or perhaps recumbent cycling if your back is your weak point?

Good luck, and woo hoo for your progress today! emoticon

Problem areas in diet and exercise and strategies to overcome them!!

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Diet Reason: Mindless snacking while working on the computer.
Strategy: Keep any food away from computer area...Keep all food items in kitchen.

Diet Reason: Snacking in evening hours when hubby snacks in front of tv.
Strategy: At first go into other room and read or do something else. Keep hands busy with hand stitching instead of snacking.

Diet Reason: Crave sugars and chocolate when stressed.
Strategy: take a walk or do some stitching. Drink water, Drink chocolate flavored tea with sugar substitute.

Exercise Reason: Walking is my main exercise. As summer comes on and heat and humidity arrives, I want to stay inside..
Strategy: Get out early morning hours and walk. After 10 straight days of walking, reward myself with pedicure, massage or someother bodily treat.

Exercise Reason: Never want to drag out the exercise mat, hand weights and find the yoga tapes..
Strategy: Transfer the yoga tapes to CD. so it will be easy to pop in my comuter. Keep exercise mat and hand weights in computer room as a reminder to work out after morning walk and before computer time. Reward will be same as walking exercise.

Great job in getting it all in focus! I'm proud of you. emoticon

One of the strategies I used to curb mindless eating is portion control. I only have the proper amount while I'm tasking, watching tv, etc. When it's gone, it's gone. That's helped me stop so much mindless eating because I really LIKE the snacks I buy and I don't want to waste the taste by not paying attention. That's too much like getting cheated out of it. I now savor the treats. It amazed me how quickly I became a mindful eater!

Sounds like some good goals. Where do you find chocolate tea? Have you ever tried any Leslie Sansone indoor walking dvds ?

Eggs are such a wonderful little package..so self contained and high in protein and some vitamins..and really pretty clean..Having free range chickens (we do keep in outside pen due to dogs in the area) and they have been pretty productive over the years. There is nothing like eating a really really fresh egg. The ones in the grocers don't near compare to the taste and freshness of "chicken eggs" right from your own hens. We do have one rooster so ours are fertilized which over the years hasn't really been a problem. I can count on one hand the bad or bloody eggs we have had in over 5 years. Our eggs probably cost us more than store bought eggs as we have to buy cracked corn and laying pellets but they are so worth the extra time, effort and cost.

Last year during the drought our hens quit laying. We had old hens then and our new pullets weren't big enough to lay. Also they didn't lay in the winter. We had mulled it over to really get rid of all of them as it was costing us to feed them with nothing in return...well about 3 weeks ago they have really started laying again. Old hens and new alike. So now we are overflowing with fresh eggs. We usually give one of the sons and his family eggs as they are the only ones to eat fresh eggs..other son and family don't like the idea of "fertilized" eggs...they just don't know what they are missing. Also we sometimes gift the neighbors...Think this year I may try to freeze them and see if I can save some for next fall and winter when the hens quit laying.

If you are interested in eating really fresh eggs, check around your area and you may find someone willing to sell you some. Our local farm and ranch store sells from a refrigerated case in their store..Or they may be able to send you to a local farmer that has them to sell.

And another thing...eggs are NOT bad for you..they are really a very healthy food.

Interesting info - never have had the opportunity to have real fresh eggs - I am sure there must be some somewhere around where I live -- thanks for sharing about your hens

I love eggs, love fresh eggs, but I live in a housing development and can't keep my own chickens. I have one staff person that I can sometimes buy from but not often enough for me! Thanks for the blog! Love it.

Didn't know you could eat fertilized eggs, and am not sure why you would want to??

Our neighbor used to sell us eggs for $1 a dozen, can you imagine? They finally sold their chickens because of the cost. Sad day for us!

A member of our craft guild brings eggs from her chickens to our meeting. She really pampers her chickens. Even making them warm food when it is really cold. They have the fanciest chicken house I have ever seen. I have got to remember to buy eggs ever month. I just forget to.

Sure is here.We daily range feed ours, they do so much better when we do.Indeed eggs are very healthy, even eating the yolk! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Love fresh eggs! In fact, I suspect I have a mild allergy to the factory farm eggs which I avoid if I can. I am lucky to have a friend who has "Urban Chickens" so I buy eggs from her whenever I can. I can tell you, they blow their pale yellow yolk cousins out of the water!
