Plum good

Sunday, April 15, 2012

If nothing happens weatherwise, we ill have plums this year. We have several varieties from a small wild yellow to an ozark to a green gage to a red....We eat at many as we possibly can and we give away and also make lots of plum jelly. I'm thinking of maybe trying to just can some this year to eat next winter..An plums are plum good for you as well. They are a good source of fiber and many vitamins (C and As) and minerals (potassium) ..They have high anti-oxidants, help with blood clotting and also with alzheimers..so eat your plums...they are plum good and plum good for you.

Excellent! Isn't it great to have free produce??

Our neighbor gives us figs and pecans, and we have a garden for veggies. Have you tried freezing the plums? Just wondering if that would work. They might be good stewed or just defrosted with a bit of sweetener.

Last year I discovered that what was supposed to be ornamental plums actually had really good plums on them. I just got a few off tree and was waiting a few days to get more. When I went back they were all gone. I guess the squirrels had been getting them all along.

Weighing

Saturday, April 14, 2012

Today was weigh day and I'm down my 1 pound..I'm excited about this and am hoping that next week is even better. Personally I don't like weighing as usually when I weigh one day, I want to weigh several times that day and then everyday. It is hard to resist weighing whenever I see the scales..But I do love seeing those pounds come off. I can feel my clothes getting looser as well..I'm just hoping the weather stays nice enough to keep the walking routine up. When it gets hot, I have to get up at the crack of dawn to walk and when it is too cold, I'm so achy that it is hard to get going. But weighing and walking go hand in hand I think.

Congratulations on the weight loss. I have found that if I don't weigh in I really get into some bad habits. I only count what I weigh in the morning. My husband weighs morning and night. I can't convince him otherwise but he has lost 35 pounds so I won't argue.

    Great job!

I don't weigh myself very often since I am stuck at a plateau. I do, however, keep track of how I am doing with my fitness levels and with how my clothes are fitting.

Congrats! I saw your great weigh-in on the team board today. Keep up the great work, you're right that the effort and the reward most certainly go together.

Just another busy day!!

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Just been busy today running errands and doing things around the house. I did manage a 15 minute walk but much too short really. I need to step it up some. I did eat on the low side today so that part wasn't hard..But it was cold again today...Finally we built a fire in the firepit so I was finally able to sit and get some hooking on my owl rug..Sorry for the short post.

I also had a busy day, but doesn't seem nearly as productive as yours, as I didn't even get a walk in. 15 minutes is definitely better than none ;-)

Garden hint

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

One of the things that hubby and I do to save money on our flower gardens is to find plants that are native or buy regular ivy. Ivy makes a terrific plant in a planter. We also have one huge flower bed that is total shade the entire day so there is hardly anything that grows there. Ivy will but it is too close to the house and we don't want ivy doing damage to the log siding. We tried caladiums and elephant ears but the spot is so cold that they don't grow well so one day several years ago we priced ferns in the local nursery...they can be quite expensive and the hot house ones really don't do well in the ground...We live in an area that has a lot of springs, rivers and creeks so there are plenty of wild ferns growing in the wet areas...so one year we planted wild ferns in one small bed and they are still faring really well ..so this year we went back down to the tiny creek and dug more and planted about a week ago and they have already taken root and are growing madly in their new home. I have dug and replanted wild violets and thrillium and just love the natural native forest look to them. So before you spend bunches of money on nursery plants look around where you live and see what you can find to transplant.

Great idea! I noticed a small bush growing in a field near my neighborhood. I may take your advice and a shovel and bring it home.

Garden Scenes

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Today has been another good day. First got a walk in and then hooked on my owl rug outside..then we drove to the local plant nursery and bought bunches of annuals...Got them planted and then ate a light lunch..then we tackled the old rambling rugosa rose which has somewhat reverted to a wild variety..And last we trimmed out the bush cherry bushes. We have alot of dead trees to still remove. The heat and drought we had last year really took a tole on all the trees and plants. Our veggie gardend is completely planted and you can almost see the plants grow. Last weekend you could barely see the plants but now they are up and off to a good start. Then I spent the rest of today sitting outside hooking on the rug again. It has been a good day. I also kept my calories on the low end. I'm on a roll...

Yay! You are doing great! We have been eating asparagus, lettuce, and radishes out of the garden. Yum!

Love the toilet planters -- how whimsical!
