This morning hubby and I drove out to a forest service lake near us. These are made with earthen dams to have water to fight forest fires. This one is exceptionally large and they have stocked it with hybrid brim, crappie, and catfish. They have also built a concrete boat ramp and a wooden fishing pier..We have fished this lake a lot and usually fish with crickets and catch the hybrid brim. These brim are usually big enough to fillet. Well the mornng was perfect with steam rising off the lake but the sun soon burned it all off. There was very little wind and the temps were perfect...well sometimes when the day seems wonderful, the fish don't bite that well. We fished about 3 hours and had enough for our lunch. It was good to take a day and just get away for a change. But it gave hubby the fishing bug so he and the middle son have gone catfishing and they plan to go every night for about 5 days.

Tomorrow hubby is helping a neighbor who has MS rake and bale his hay. I am working at the art guild from 3-8pm. so going to be a busy day.

Sounds like an absolutely wonderful day! Some of my best memories from childhood are fishing trips with my Dad, they were always an adventure.

I like to be out on the water. I really haven't been fishing much since my husband Bill died in 1988. Some of those trips weren't fun but I enjoyed looking out over the water and sometimes I actually caught fish. I gave most of my fishing gear away last year to a youth group that wanted fishing stuff.

"Worm Tree"

Thursday, May 17, 2012

I bought this tree for hubby many years ago for Father's day. It is what we call a Worm Tree. It's real name is Catalpa or Catawba tree. It has beautiful blooms which later turn into long bean looking seed pods. It is also called the Fish Bait tree. Once it gets big enough many fishermen find another tree that has worms and they put them on the new tree. We put worms on our tree about 3 years ago. Two years ago we had a lot of worms which we picked, blanched an froze to use for catfish bait. But last year the heat and drought hit about the time the little worms came out of the ground and so they went back into hibernation. We are hoping that the heat and drought didn't kill them all. We should know in the next week or 2. The worms will begin to come out as soon as it quits blooming. The worms will be tiny but will grow really fast.

Our tree is exceptional for this type of tree. But it has been taken well care of. Like our bodies need taking care of to be healthy.

We will be using the frozen worms soon to go cat fishing. Got to find a good recipe for catfish without frying it.

I've known of this tree since I was a child but didn't know where the worms came from. I just knew of the long pods and it being fishbait.

Sunshine and gardens

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

I took a short break from SP just to enjoy the sunshine and the garden. It won't be long now before we will be eating from our garden. In fact think we may have fresh squash today. We grill it and it is so yummy. Our Allred plum has ripened it's fruit and for such a scruffy tree, we got a gallon bucket. It was struck by the heat wave and drought we had last summer so we had trimmed it back so drastically that it was pitiful looking. But the few branches that were left produced a bucket full..They are the best eating plums we have..Hubby and I have already made a dent in the bucket..they won't last long. They seem to be smaller than usual too this year so one plum is a bite full. Our wild plums are ripening slowly so we have eaten a few here and there...There won't be enough of them to make jam and they aren't as sour as I expected. This is the first year to eat them. Hubby dug them up off the side of a road 5 years ago and this year is the first year the weather has cooperated and they were big enough. They grow in a clump of trees and spread by their root system.

By next week, we ought to have cucumbers, greenbeans, zuccini and maybe blueberries on our table. We so enjoy our garden and the exercise it provides.

Sounds wonderful! I wandered around the plant nursery yesterday, but came home with flowering plants instead of vegetable plants. Maybe next year :-)

Sounds like a yummy garden. I haven't planted anything this year. Didn't want Zack tilling with his heart acting up and his ankle like it is. After a month the ankle and toes are still blue. There is still some swelling but not near as much.

5% Challenge update.

Saturday, May 12, 2012

I'm posting the original commentment I made that is on my front Soarkpage and then the update at the bottom.

5% Challenge Commitment:
How much and how often will you exercise?
I'm already walking 10 minutes a day. I plan to up the walk time by a minute each day as my back will allowe. I am adding core and upper body exercises using hand weights. As I get stronger I plan to add yoga to the mix.

What diet will you follow?
Spark diet of charting all my calories, eating more fruit and vegetables, less sugar and lower my fat intake.

How will you support your team?
When I am placed in with team members into a team then I plan to get to know each one and try to post to one of the members blogs daily and help each to step out of their comfort zones and expand to do more each day.

Starting weight 211 (March 12, 2012)
Lose 10.6lbs by May 12, 2012
Calorie count kept between 1200-1500
Burn 730 or more per week

UPDATE ON THE CHALLENGE:. I'm very happy with my results. I have lost about an inch overall on my measurements. I've gone from only being able to do 10minutes of fitness daily to 30minutes per day. I have lost 10lbs...not quite the 10.6 but I'm very very happy with these results. I'm looking forward to a summer challenge as well as I'd like to keep this roll going...I feel so much better even though having to endure 3 weeks of allergies due to pollen and not able to get as much fitness in on those days. Over all I'm pleased. I plan to keep on going until final goal is made.

We have had this huge brush pile at the top of our hill for over a year. It had not only brush and tree tops from trees and brush we had cleared but also lumber scraps from hubby's wood working he has been doing. I had gone through and picked out some of the lumber to use for birdhouses but most was trash wood. We also had a couple of old mattresses on the pile. It had just grown bigger and bigger and was such an eyesore. We were wating for the perfect time to burn..no or little wind, a few days after a rain and right before another rain....and the brush had to be dry enough that it would burn quickly. Well late yesterday afternoon was perfect...so we fired it up and set it ablaze..And it was completely burned by dark. It is still smoldering today and the ashes will remain hot for a few days. Then we will go through it with the tractor and get all the metal pieces out. I am hoping to salvage some old bed springs to use in my crafting first.

But to use this as an analogy of my life....I grew up skinny and didn't have any problems gaining weight...just never happened...then as I aged and I was diagnosed with RA I continued to be active and only put on a little weight which wasn't bad as I had been so skinny. Well the RA got to the point that my knees were so affected that I needed knee replacements but the ortho dr wouldn't do it until I turned 50..so I went 5 years limping and just not walking and being as active as I had been before and the weight piled on..like us piling on the brush and wood...and before I knew it, it was out of hand...same as the bursh pile. So with taking steps to really diet and try to do the exercise I can do, was kind of like setting fire to that brush pile. I needed the Spark of Sparkpeople and our brush pile needed the spark from a match...I just really wish I could lose the weight as fast as that brush pile went up..but it doesn't matter, the result will be the same..and getting healthy is my priority now as will making that area where the brush pile was a much prettier place as well.

I know that my reduced activity has really added to my weight in the last 5 years. Until then I had bounced up and down several times but nothing like this.

It would be great if we could burn it off quickly like your fire. Great blog.
