5% Summer Challenge Goals

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Today's assignment is to list all the reasons you want to lose weight. What do you want to change? How do you want to look? How do you want to feel? What things will you be able to do in the future with a slimmer healthier body? And list all the OTHER things that you want to change!

I accomplished the Spring challenge and had a gradual weight loss each week..sometimes only half a pound a week. I felt so good about this accomplishment and also got under the 200# mark.

Here are my reasons for wanting to lose weight...
1. Mainly to get healthier. I have been so sick these past couple of years. Over 3 years ago, I started SP and lost 47lbs...when I got sick that next winter, I quit and gained it all back plus some..
2. I want to be able to wear some smaller clothes instead of the same old size 20's. It is so hard to find decent looking clothes in the larger sizes.
3. I want my husband and family to be proud of me and my accomplishments. They love me as I am but not sure I don't embarrass them at times.
4. I want to get more physically fit so I don't lose my other joints and become wheel chair bound.
5. I want to be able to go hiking again with my sister.
6. We have a queen size bed and sometimes feel like there is no room in the bed. I want us both to fit the bed.

What do I want to change?
1. I have already changed alot of my eating habits, but want to continue to eat more fruit and veggies and continue it during the winter months.
2. I want to cut out sugar completely from my diet. (not sure this will be possible but willing to try).
3. In the spring challenge I went from 10minutes of walk time to an average of 20minutes. I want to increase this to at least 30 minutes.

How do I want to feel and look?
1. I want my joints, especially my feet and back to quit hurting.
2. I want to be able to wear smaller size clothing and to dress up more and not look so slouchy.
3. I want to have more energy to do the things I love.

What I hope to accomplish in the future is to get back to walking and hiking more often and spend more time with my sister.

You did great during the Spring Challenge and I know you will do your best this go around too. I think small consistent weight loss every week is the way to go. You are building healthy habits as you go, and will most likely keep the weight off then.

Hey Von! What team are you on? I'm back to the beautiful butterflies.

These are all great reasons. You've done great doubling your exercise, so now it's time to step it up another 10 minutes a day. You can do this!

I know your sister will enjoy having her walking buddy back!

Garden Views

Saturday, June 09, 2012

These are our potted citrus...the top is a lemon (I know it looks like a lime) and the bottom is an orange..not sure if the orange will be a miniature or not..Our winters are too cold here to grow in the ground so we grow in pots and take into a plant room for the winter. They began blooming in February this year and are still blooming. We also have a potted pomegranite but it can grow in the ground here.

We planted a red, a white and a blue clematis this year on our new trellis..the reds have begun blooming and are more maroon than red. But they are loaded with blooms.

These are someo of our produce we have gathered this year. We have gotten 5 bushels of pinto beans off our vines this year and so far we have picked 7 gallons of blueberries.

This is my newest garden gnome. My sweet DIL got this for me for my birthday this year. Think she got it at Lowes...anyway he is almost hidden in the faux sweet potato vines...we have 3 varieties of them this year. And they do so much better than flowers in our heat and drought..though we do have to water every other day. The wheel barrow was my grandparents so it is about 100 years old.

Wish my clematis looked as good as yours do. My little beagle got bored one afternoon and dug mine up. I replanted it but it's still looking rather sad, although it's still alive! Love all your blueberries! I think I need to plant a couple of those bushes! Enjoyed all your pictures.

Oh my gosh Barb I so LOVE everything about your garden and all your harvest. I am still hunting for the perfect gnome for my yard when we get moved in. But you have so much of what we want and I cannot wait until next year when I can start putting pictures on here of things we have grown & harvested and things that are blooming.

So wonderful and so healthy for you. I LOVE pinto beans, do you freeze or can them?

Pat Sonny on the back for his green thumbs and you to sweetie.

Wow, I am really jealous! Our garden got totally burned up in the month we were gone.

We had to buy a new lemon tree this year so no blossoms. Maybe next year.

That's a lot of pinto beans! What are you doing with your blueberries?

Squirrel madness!!!

Thursday, June 07, 2012

I know you are wondering why there is the above photo...well I have squirrel madness..We have 3 peach trees with peaches and one had almost ripened...but they were still green...The neighborly squirrels decided to have a taste...well as you can see they broke some branches and ate quite a few peaches...I'm so furious...we have declared war on the squirrels..This tree is really no loss as it is a very old tree and only produces tiny peaches now but they are still tasty...We hae a large fully loaded Elberta peach tree so think we may put up an electric fence around the base of it to keep the pesky critters at bay. One year the squirrels, raccoons and deer tore a plum tree completely down...it has taken 3 years for it to recover...I've been dreaming of fresh peaches for awhile now so these squirrels have made me mad.

Squirrel stew is the answer in my book. We killed all the passenger pigeons by eating them why not squirrels?

Critters! If it isn't the squirells, it's the deer. If it isn't the deer, it's the bunnies. If it isn't the bunnies, it's the woodchucks!

Man against nature, and while we can win the battles, I don't think we'll ever win the wars!!!

If you grow rhubarb near the trees they avoid it because the smell = poison to them.

Blueberry Dreams

Tuesday, June 05, 2012

I'm having blueberry dreams...Our blueberries are beginning to ripen. Yesterday afternoon we picked abut 2 gallons...then the DIl came out this morning and she and Miss Molly picked more..Now I will wait a day and hopefully be able to keep the birds out until Thursday when I will need to pick again. It seems the berries aren't as big as usual or as many. We lost half our bushes last year so are down to 5 bushes but they will be more than enough. The picking used to be so intense but now with just 5 bushes, it should be easier to handle.

Gardening is now an every day thing...water and pick..and put up...I boiled down another couple gallons of plums we had left in the refrigerator. I just hated to see them ruin. We still have one plum tree that hasn't ripened and it is loaded. The oldest peach tree has had a few to ripen but they are so tiny this year...but they do taste good. We have been watering the Elberta peach and those are much bigger so hope we get a few...we are in major drought now..haven't had a rain (even a drop) for over a month (almost month and half) and we have no grass left...watering is strictly for the fruit and veggies. Wishing and praying for rain.

Wow, I'm jealous of your blueberries AND plums! The place where we always U-Pick lost ALL their bushes last year (why??) so I had to buy them this year. It actually was a lot easier and not any more expensive. Go figure.

I would be eating plums until they came out of my ears. I love them, and they are so expensive in the store.

Those blueberries look wonderful! There is so much work involved, but it has to be gratifying when you eat fresh food you have grown yourself.

I wish you had a fruit & veggie stand close by. Last year the Texas heat was so bad one of our big trees died. Praying for rain!

Fast Dash Weekend

Monday, June 04, 2012

Well our trip to Texas was a made dash!!!!! Really not much fun..no sight seeing and it was so hot and miserable the entire time.
We left home around 8:30a.m. Friday and when we were within 40 miles of our destination, we called for directions to the motel..told to drive to Magnolia..but they failed to tell us it was in New Magnolia not the old one so we drove about 15 miles past our motel and had to turn around and go back...so arrived around 5:30..rested about 30 minutes and then went to the son's house..

They live in a gated community and was told the gate would be open only to get there and found it locked so had to wait about 20 minutes for someone to come open it for us. The visit was an eye opener..the DIL's entire family was there and they were all inside their beautiful home in the a/c...and no room for us to sit anywhere so hubby and I and other DIL with her girls that live near us and the son all visited in his hot garage shop, but at least we got to visit some with him. Granddaughter who was graduation was only there 5 minutes...

Then on Saturday the graduation was at 3p.m. Hubby and I usually eat just 2 meals...breakfast and then lunch around 3..the breakfast which was free at the motel was awful and not healthy at all..had a queasy stomach from it and we couldn't eat until after the graduation. Graduation was at Texas A&M campus in the Reed Arena. The college had scheduled all the area high schools for the same day so the traffic and the crowd of people was just terrible..With 400-500students graduating per school..Well we left as soon as the granddaughter got her diploma. The motel was an hour and 20 minute drive from College station so we didn't eat until we got back and then decided on Mexican food at cafe next door to motel..it was the worst food ever...and so needless to say, eating this late and such terrible food all day, made me so sick all night, so I didn't get very much sleep. The reason we didn't eat with the son and DIL and her entire family is they never eat until around 8:30 or 9p.m...
Sunday morning hubby got up early and went over to just visit with the son. He told him the next child who graduates that we will come the week before or the week after but never to that mad house again. We left around 9:30 and got home by 4:30.

The reason we didn't visit much at the son's house either was not only was the DIL's entire family there but her ex-husband and his new wife and his other ex-wife and her husband and all their kids...it was a madhouse with all those people and also the entire neighborhood..several families with kids..We just don't do crowds well..So there won't be a repeat.

So good to get home and back into routine...thankfully I didn't gain a pound but didn't lose any either and couldn't get much walking in either.

Now that we are home, we have garden to pick and water, blueberries are ripening and so are the peaches..so going to be a busy time for next few weeks.

That sounded like a terrible weekend. I've never had to deal with such a thing with my children and their in-laws. I guess I am fortunate. We have never had that big a gathering. All the ex's made me think of a Chrismas that got a bit strange with a step-son I had.

I have a cousin that lives in College Station but I have only seen her at a few funerals and when I was a very little girl.

Oh my goodness. It does sound like a very hectic weekend. My hubby and I are not big crowd people either. I would love to live closer to my sister when we retire, but her hubby has a HUGE extended family that is around all the time. They never have gatherings with less than 40 people at them, and that would drive me crazy.

I am glad you made it home safely, and back to you routine.

Have a great week!
