I've never been one to take a nap even as a child..it seems to give me a belly ache but mainly I think it keeps me from sleeping well at night so I usually avoid naps. I have taken a cat nap for 10-15 minutes and seems not to bother me as much but then may still have the sleepless night if I do. I've always been hyper by nature and could never sit still..Even when I sleep at night, I tend to toss and turn and kick so when I wake in the morning, the covers are everywhere. The pulmonary doctor was concerned and said I had restless leg syndrome but I just explained that I've been that way as a child..I just don't want to be medicated for something that I've always done. But I have to really try to make myself stay in bed in the mornings when I wake at 4 a.m...and usually I will manage another hour or 2..but by 6a.m. I'm ready to get up..I usually go to bed around 9:30 or 10 and will read for about 30 minutes to an hour..it seems to lull me to sleep..We do not have tv in our bedroom. I also found that a nice HOT bath seems to relax me enough to sleep better...Another thing I've found out about my sleep is I do not sleep well if I can see any light..and our appliances around the house are lit up like Christmas trees..so much so that I can walk through the house at night without any extra light..also I struggle when there is a full moon..but I have found sleep masks at Walmarts so have purchased a few and make sure I go to sleep with one on..it has sure made a difference on my sleep time. I'm still more restless on full moons but now I can sleep some.

    I have had sleep problems most of my life (partly due to being on call so much). Since I developed Sweet Syndrome 5 years ago I almost always have to take a nap. I rarely sleep straight through the night.

    A good night's sleep is one of the most valuable things in the world, but a nap in the nick of time can go a long way, too!

    There are times I just can't get through the day without a nap. For years I could only sleep 3 hours a night. The doctors tried every sleeping pill out there, and none of them worked. I'd fall asleep and be wide awake 3 hours later. I worked two jobs during that time, too, so I really did need the sleep.

Now I can fall asleep but I can't stay that way. I keep waking up. I've been tested for apnea and I don't have it. I just wake up.

    I don't nap much either. I'd rather get a good night's sleep than to waste my daylight hours sleeping. But I have been known to zonk out from exhaustion from time to time on a Sunday afternoon.

    I don't nap either, well not on purpose! I have fallen asleep sitting in the big chair with the dog watching tv. I think it definitely affects how I sleep at night.

Fat Pets

You know our pets sometimes become overweight just because we are..We have a chihuahua that was a rescue dog from the side of the road..she was so thin when we got her that we fed her as much as she would eat just to fatten her up..well now it is several years later and think we have done too good of a job fattening her up..We have had her on a diet since last fall and she still hasn't lost much weight..her problem like mine is she hates to exercise..So when it is hot she tends to lay up and get fatter. Meet Miss Gracie....


Then my sister has 2 indoor cats..they have been de-clawed (which by the way I think it cruel but it is their cats) and so they stay inside all the time and rarely get much exercise..My sister has gained some weight over the years as well though she isn't near as fat as I am..but she is shorter and smaller build than me and now that her back is out of whack she can't do the hiking she loves. Her cats are not only fat but they are huge cats..long and tall.This is one of her cats The other isn't as fat. ....So maybe it is a good time to take a look at our pets as well as ourselves..take those pets for a walk or play with them more..

I know I will be walking Miss Gracie more and playing ball with her inside.

    We are limiting our Daisy dog's food right now because she is being kept quiet from her recent surgery. Once we can start rehabilitation, though, we will be (me generally!) taking her for multiple walks a day. I can hardly wait. She is definitely gaining weight even with limiting her food. Just goes to show, diet alone won't control weight, requires exercise too!

    The biggest concern with overweight cats is diabetes. We had a cat who developed diabetes when it was 10 years old, which is apparently geriatric. Luckily, he realized the insulin shots made him feel better and he would sit in front of the fridge when it was time for his shot. Our current felines are sisters and both like to play but with different things. We have catnip balls for one and a laser pointer for the other. We try for 15 minutes a day with each one but sometimes it's just not possible. One of them likes to be held while I'm starting my warm up in the morning but then that's enough "exercise" for her!

I don't know about diabetes and dogs but I would guess that getting exercise will help prevent that for Miss Gracie! Good luck and have fun with the extra walks!

    I've never had overweight cats before, but now I have a very chubby kitty. I always used to free-feed my cats before, but now I've had to resort to measuring this cat's food, but he's still holding onto his weight. Now I need to figure out how to make him get more exercies.

    Totally agree with you! Our cat was a stray and super-skinny when we adopted her. Now she is a fat cat even though she mostly stays outdoors. The funny thing is she will NEVER totally empty her food bowl -- she'll stop eating before it's completely gone and then just meow and meow until we refill the bowl! It's true; our pets train us! I have her on a lower calorie food.

    Hey there - I know what you mean. I adopted my Daisy, an orange tabby cat, 5 years ago after my cat I'd had for 18.5 years passed. Daisy came to me weighing 15 pounds & she is only 13 inches long & had 3.5 inch legs - she's supposed to be a petite little flower!!!

What a challenge she has been - In December 2010 I took her to a new vet (all she had done was gain weight on the diet my former vet had her own - I think he was literally having me starve her & she did NOT lose weight)! She weighed in at 18.5 pounds - she could barely walk, hobbled! I felt so badly for her, her weight was killing her joints - she was in such pain - I could just tell. She got to where she wouldn't jump up on her favorite places; I had to get a 3 step walk up for the bed or she couldn't have gotten up there with me.

Bottom line - the new vet said she needed a light wet catfood - no more dry food. As of April 2012 she now weighs 9.75 pounds. The vet is delighted - really wants her to get down to 8 pounds - so we continue on.

Daisy runs all over the house - jumps up & plays so much now! She feels GREAT & looks so adorable!

Good luck with your pets! I tell people the "girls" in our house (me & Daisy) are getting thin & fit!!!

Sitting!!!

I just love this saying..I really need it about now as well..thinking I may blow up and tape to my bathroom door so I will see it and get off my duff more..This heat drives me to just want to sit around and do nothing..Sure I can hand stitch and stay busy but it isn't going to help in the exercise department...as I've said before, I DO NOT like exercise..I don't mind walking.............when the weather is nice but to exercise another part of my anatomy is like pulling teeth...I need someone wiht a wet noodle after my duff to get me moving...any takers?????

    Exercise is still a four letter word for me too ... work! I agree with LadyJ, you need to find an active activity you like, and do that for exercise. I am lucky that I have a Curves within a mile of my house. When the weather cooperates, I can actually walk there and back.

    I know what you mean! We do our exercise first thing (8 miles, started at 5:40 this morning IN THE DARK), but then we are done for the day! OR, we'll go to the fitness center and then...we're done for the day. (as in spending the rest of the day in the house sitting on our duffs.)

This Arkansas heat is KILLING me this year.

    Too cute, find an active activity you like vs simple exercise and it'll be easier to get moving. That or early morning or evening exercise in the heat helps too.

I just read an article here on SP about 10 Strategies for Success.

1. Start Small.....We tend to make our goals so large sometimes that they become unattainable..so we need to start with smaller goals we can reach..Say 2-4 pounds lost a month, 10minute daily walks..these are the ones I have started out with and have stuck with since January..it is slow but its progress.

2. Get it on paper......better yet post it on your SP page front and center for everyone to see and it will keep you accountable.

3. Focus on everyday habits......if you make a goal of eating more fiber every day for a week then focus on this every day..don't overload yourself with too many goals at a time..but keep focused on those you do make..make it a habit..after 30 days it should become second nature to you.

4. Always see your goal....write it down and post it on your bathroom mirror or refrigerator or in bold letters on your SP page..but always think about your goal and what you have to do to obtain it.

5. Be consistent.....if you decide to walk everyday then do it at the same time every day..if you measure your food, never skip a time where you measure thinking you can eyeball it and be fine..or if you plan to drink more water, then keep water with you at all time and be consistent in all you do.

6. Never Stop Learning....there is so much information in the world today and so much we can learn about getting healthy and doing the right thing for our bodies..SP has lots and lots of info and why I love SP so much.

7. Come out os seclusion.....sometimes when we are overweight we tend to hide from others..we will cover our fat with loose baggy clothes..we will not tell anyone what we are doing and when we eat, we sometimes hide to eat as we dont'others to know how much we really eat..but if we are open about everything like many of us here then we not only help ourselves to seem real but we help others in the same walk they are doing.

8. Allow for Setbacks....sure we aren't going to do it right every single minute of every day...it is a struggle and sometimes we lose that struggle...but instead of just chunking it all and saying "whats the use?" and use it as an excuse to pig out or skip a walk..we need to realize we all have times where we take a step backwards..but learn from our mistakes and realize noone is perfect and get back to it and do it right the next time around.

9. Trust your plan....if you have set good goals that are attainable you need to trust that plan to work,...you may not see much in the way of weight loss and it may be slow as snails..but if we keep trusting that it will work...then later one down the road we will realize hey I've lost this much or hey I can walk a mile or hey I can run a marathon..etc..

10. Have fun!!! Always remember to have fun..find ways to have fun exercising..one I watch here does alot with a hula hoop and it sure looks like she is having so much fun..I noticed the ad for the Bollywood exercise so I'm taking the plunge and buying those CD's as it looks like so much fun and not so hard on the joints..Find ways to prepare your food that makes it fun..be a kid again..try new veggies and fruit..just have fun getting healthy.

    Great blog! I think that setting small goals is so important. I have started with the following goals: items to cut from my diet , track my food, and drink more water. I of course had to eneter a target weight but I chose an attainable weight and will change it when I achieve it.

Prayer Answered

I had mentioned here to several people to pray for my SIL who is my husband's youngest sister. She has been through breast cancer and is over a 5 year survivor..well she got a bad report from her mammogram and also ultra sound and was sent to Little Rock to the cancer center doctor to do some kind of biopsy..well she called after her appointment today and is not going to have a biopsy after all..it seems that fatty tissue has built up in the area of the mammogram that showed a spot..But since she has been having problems from the nerve damage that was done when she had lymph nodes removed and also partial masectomy ..they do suggest she have a breast reduction..so she is looking at surgery with 3 week down time..she teaches school and is going to wait until Christmas to have it..
But the good news is the cancer has not returned..and I'm so so thankful..there were so many who had her on their prayer lists and I do so appreciate it and prayer does work..God is a healing God..Thanks.
