I am old school when it comes to new gadgets like cell phones...Let me give a little background to my phone lines first...
We moved here to the "boonies" in 1986. We had a phone that was a party line land line which was all we could get at the time. We had the party line phone for about 4 years until Alltel finally upgraded to a private line..and that was about the time you could get internet here but it was dial up only for years. Then finally cell phones came out but we could not even get cellular service for another few years..we live in a really hilly mountainous area and to get any cell service you would have to drive to the top of a mountain to use a cell phone so we never bothered to get one..then finally Alltel sold out their landline service to windstream and windstream upgraded and we finally got DSL but still no cell service in the area..then finally they built a tower in our area and we were able to get cell service which I promptly did..Then Alltel sold out to Verizon and things changed and got worse..Now we have been with Verizon through Alltel for years!!!!!! and been good customers all this time..bills paid on time etc...
Well about 20 months ago we decided we needed new phones and really didn't want to get on a so called "plan" with a contract..and since we were both retired, I decided we needed to ask for a senior discount..well what they gave us was awful!!!! We had to sign an 18 month contract and get new phones since we were still using alltel phones..then they said they could lower our bill to a senior plan and so we went ahead and signed the contract..well we got a savings of $4 per month is all and we lost minutes..we went from 700 minutes to 450 minutes but we were told we could have cell to cell minutes free..and it included other company cell phones..well our contract ran out in June and they called us wanting us to upgrade to new phones and sign new contract and I told them no..so we were not under contract with them now..well got my monthly bill and it was double what it usually was..it was $156 and was usually $89...Now we are very basic people and don't text, don't message people and don't use any dataplan...never go online just very basic calling people and talking to them is all we ever do..but my sister is with ATT and I had been calling her cell phone and so Verizon charged me 5cents per minute for going over my 450 minutes per month and this was calling her cell from my cell or she calling me from her cell so Verizon screwed us all the way around..
I called them this morning to see what they could do and talked over 2 hours to 2 different people and they could not do anything..they could upgrade us to more mintues but would be more than what it was when we had the 700 minutes or we could keep the plan we have now..They would not work with me at all.
Now here is the bad thing.. since we are in such a rural area Verizon more or less has a monopoly here..the only other service we can get is straight talk..I explained to Verizon that I could go with Straight talk and get a dataplan to use phone for internet cheaper than they could do for me with no dataplan..and still they would not budge..so I told them to just drop us..then they said we had been such good customoers over the year that it was sad they couldn't do anything for us..well they have just gotten too big for their britches..so tomorrow we are going to get a straight talk phone..
My wish is that more people would just drop them and go with someone else and then they would think about it if they start losing customers..and I'm making sure to tell everyone how sorry they are..
