Balanced Diet

Friday, October 12, 2012

You know when you go by SP and plug in your calories and then run your nutrition panel you find it very hard to meet all you daily guidelines. I've been having major problems getting enough protein and calcium..But then I usually take a calcium pill a day too so feel like I'm getting that one ok..but even the doctor told me I needed more protein. I have been getting tired in the afternoons and she told me it was because of that when I told her what I ate..she suggest 2 T. peanut butter..but even though it is good for protein boost and the fat in it isn't as bad as some, it still comes in high in calories...I don't want to eat more eggs as I eat one egg for breakfast every morning and don't want to boost my cholesterol more than that..then I could eat yogurt but really don't care for it that much..and then there is turkey breast...I do keep this on hand as hubby will smoke them along with our hams every couple of months..then I found the Babybel cheeses...and the light ones have protein and not as many calories as the nut butters..and also found out that the lowfat or fat free milk has to be enriched with extra calcium as when they remove or reduce the fat our bodies can't absorb as much..so I drink whole milk..I just count the calories in. I don't normally like drinking my calories but thinking of all the added benefits of whole milk..the fat in it helps your body absorb the calcium and vitamin D..so it isn't as bad for you as you think..I normally drink just 1 glass a day and it is usually the amount that totals for entire day that I put in my tea..but with cooler weather coming on, I will be drinking a cup of warm milk before bed..think it will help in many areas for me...added calcium and vitamin D...added protein and added bonus of helping me sleep better.

Over all it is hard to keep a balanced diet..I have an easier time during the summer months when our garden is coming off but I'm working at it..and we do have much of our fresh produce in the freezer now so eating on it as well.

Protein is the main nutrient that I struggle with as well. I found that eating black beans, pinto beans, or lentils every day helps. Also cottage cheese or greek yogurt. Those two are definitely an acquired taste though.

Keep working at it!

Diet Glasses

Thursday, October 11, 2012

This is going to be a strange post..I used to wear glasses for distance..they were as thick as pop bottle bottoms...and was almost considered legally blind..I had RK surgery when in my late 30's and got them fixed. I still have some bends in the curves of my eyes which make it hard to focus sometimes especially at night so I rarely drive at night now..but it has been like a miracle being able to see distance especially to read a clock at night with out fumbling for my glasses. I have gradually gone to the drug store readers..and try to buy mine at the dollar tree. I still go in occasionally for an eye exam and think now one is needed.. I've had to go to stronger and stronger readers and the other day I even drove with them on..so think my eyes are now getting bad again. And also found myself eating with my glasses on this morning..didn't realize it until I had finished and went back to my rug hooking..Also when I went to get my license renewed this year, I wasn't sure I could use my readers so almost didn't pass the test..my sister told me later I could have used the readers..Anyway I'm thankful for what I can see and not having to wear those heavy pop bottle bottoms.

I know what you mean about going stronger and stronger on the readers. I wear bifocals, but when I am doing any needle work, I have to use the cheaters that are a higher magnification or I can't see the work.

I hope you can get in soon to see your eye doctor.

Have you any Wool?

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Yes sir, yes sir 4 bags full..

I'm am so thrilled. Most of you here know I do traditional rug hooking and I use wool fabric...I buy a lot of my wool at the thrift store in the way of clothes and blankets. Lately the thrift stores have not had any as there are other rug hookers in the area that usually beat me to the good deals..

Well this afternoon a lady who is in the art guild with me and a beginning hooker called me. She was downsizing her wool stash..and asked if I wanted some of her wool..So we met and I was thinking maybe a bag full..well I wound up with 4 huge garbage bags full..the middle red one is completely full of red coats...I was running out of red and was thinking I would have to buy some off the bolt expensive red wool as in dyeing wool red and black are the hardest 2 colors to get deep enough..so now I have to get busy and cut the clothing apart and bundle and cut "woolie worms"...I'm so excited...

I got some walking in today but not like I wanted. My hip and back was hurting pretty bad..thinking a front is coming in soon. I have managed to stay on the low end of my calorie range and haven't felt hungry today..eating more protein has been helping me to keep the hunger pains at bay.

Diet and Exercise 10/9

Tuesday, October 09, 2012

Just a little update..Strangely today I have had trouble making my low end of my calorie tracking..rarely happens but it has today and don't seem as hungry. I've begun eating those Babybel light cheeses to give myself more protein and wonders of wonders think it is keeping me feeling full..so know I need more protein. Since our garden is over, I need to try to eat more veggies but I am still eating apples left from our tree (every day) so think it is all combining to help keep me from feeling like I want to chow down.

Still struggling with exercise. I did get a 20 minute walk in and did 10 minutes of arm exercises so got 30 minutes..but when it is cloudy and cold, I just don't want to move much..The joint problems I have seem to be worse during these type days..
I will keep plugging away though...

Bread

Monday, October 08, 2012

This time of year I think bread is my downfall. It is like my body is telling me to feed it...like a bear getting ready for his winter nap..stock up on the food and especially the more fattening things like bread..It is like I crave it and think of it constantly..I've been trying to keep chewing sugarfree gum and eating an apple during the day when I get the bread craving..I refuse to give into this..This is leading into baking season and I do love to bake but I'm going to stand firm and not bake this year except for a fundraiser for my art guild..and let the DILs doing the baking for the holidays this year.

I WILL STAND FIRM.

I love bread too and I don't eat it very often but every once in a while, I do have to eat some. I agree with doinitright, this is the rest of your life kind of life style and we only live once so bake and eat just a little and give the rest away. emoticon

Oh yes....homemade bread with homemade strawberry jam...mmmm... and I have a neighbor who seems to think it's her duty to bring me a loaf of her fresh homemade whole wheat bread when she bakes...it is incredibly yummy....

I just try not to do it too often. When I do, I try to have a "plan" in mind so there are not bunches of leftovers to tempt me. For example I will plan to make french toast for the kids breakfast or dinner rolls out of most of the dough (easy to freeze).

Or....if I must....one day of bread with every single meal and snack and then I'm overly satisfied and done with it!!

What makes bread your downfall? Is it that you just can!t stop at one slice? Is it what you put on it? I prefer cream cheese and home made jam. Remember this is a LIFE STYLE. If Fall calls you to bake, bake! Work it into your plan, then give the extra loaf to a neighbor or relative or friend. You can do it!
