Monday's new start

Monday, January 07, 2013

Well as everyone knows good intentions sometimes go by the wayside. I had so wanted to start this new year out to a good start on the exercise and dieting..I did ok but not spectacular last week. I'm starting over this week and these are this week's goals..

1. Keeping the calorie count within the tracking range. (I know I can do this one but will be hard)...know you are wondering why it will be hard..well yesterday we made a trip down to visit the SIL and she knows both mine and hubby's favorite candy are the chocolate turtles..well she had made us a HUGE batch to bring home..I couldn't resist last night so ate 2..so I'm going to get hubby to put them in the refrigerator outside and when he gets a craving, he can go out there to eat them out of my sight..I have such terrible will power especially when it comes to that candy..Thing is SIL knows I'm dieting as her daughter and her struggle with it as well but the SIL is doing great keeping the weight off and her daughter finally resorted to a lapband..but think she was thinking more of Sonny than me so there fore if it is out of my sight it will be out of my mind (hopefully)

2. I plan to walk at least 15mintues per day whether inside in place or outside when the weather allows. This shouldn't be hard either.

3. I plan to start doing some other kind of exercise for 15minutes per day as well. I'm starting with arm and upper body exercises this week..this should be easy and maybe if I continue it will become a habit.

I will add to or change my goals each week. I have a terrific team here who will help me stay honest. Thanks all and you know who you are.

Jan 4 &5 Day slip

Saturday, January 05, 2013

Well let a day slip by me yesterday without posting. Our oldest son finally came for his Christmas visit as snow and ice had hindered him the week before. He only brought the grandson but that was good as last visit with them, he was so tied up with his friends. The only grandson is in the 8th grade and 5'10" already. His dad is 6'4" so imagine he will be tall as well. He has epilepsy and has already tried the brain surgery to control it but it didn't work so now besides medication, he has a pacemaker for the brain. He has hearing loss and learning disabilities also because of it but he is a trooper.

Today is going to be quiet though I am cleaning house as tomorrow we are finally making that trip down in the southern part of our state to finally visit the SIL. So busy day tomorrow and may not get here to post much.

Diet is going ok but still struggling with the walking and other exercises. I'm just going to have to crack down and just do it..but it is easier said than done. So may get a good start this Monday.

Jan 3. Creating a better self

Thursday, January 03, 2013

Aren't we all here at SP trying to create a better version of ourselves? I know I am. I'm determined this year to make myself healthier and stronger and smaller.

Did good today on eating but really need to get into more exercise. I'm thinking of buying a walking DVD and maybe a Bollywood dance DVD and think they will keep me more focused when the weather won't allow me outside. I did finally figure out how to add apps to the new computer so have added a couple of yoga ones..now to make myself use them. And really SP has so many good videos I could use instead of spending the money on one.

Had a good day..went to our small town and found a few things for my SIL for her Christmas. I had planned on going right after Christmas but the snow kept me from going anywhere and today has been the first sunny warmer day. Also got a little something for her husband. So think we may have trip down to visit them this Saturday.

Don't know if I mentioned it but the other cold night it got down into the teens and hubby forgot to turn the thermostat up on the heater in our plant house where we keep all our house plants..and think we lost all our begonias...but they were the ones that were a pain to grow anyway...Our lemons and oranges did ok as well as our palms and ivies and ferns so am glad about that...the only reason we had the begonias as his mother who had a green thumb had given me cuttings of them years ago..and how knows they may come out from the root later on.

I think I'm starting out this year on the right foot if I can just get off my duff and get walking or exercising more.

A friend of mine had her begonias freeze over winter, and at least one came back in the spring. I guess it depends on the type, maybe? I definitely do not have a green thumb (I even manage to make the leaves fall off silk plants - no joke!)....

The videos on Spark people really are good, if your computer can run them, since you have the new one it should be fine. Also, UTube has some great ones that are also free. You may find some Bollywood ones on there.

I am also determined to make 2013 a success. I am tired of the up and down, and just need to get to goal once and for all.

Jan2 Portion size

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

Are we really careful with our portion size?
Do you still measure your portions or eyeball it?

I find myself sometimes eyeballing my portion size and most of the time I can get it just about right but then other times I really need to take the time to truly measure it.

Note on today.
I did get 15min. of walking in place today. Going to have to get one of those walking videos. It is on my list of things to buy this month.

I also got my computer completely fixed..Tech lady called me and walked me through with changing the email account and also showed me some things on how to move about in apps..it made is so much more enjoyable..also found out that the windows 8 program that I first used must not have been working properly as things run so much better now..

I also fudged a little today and ate one piece of fudge but counted it on my tracker and still came out ok. I still can eat 2 cutie tangerines later. I made a terrific deep dish kind of pizza but used low fat crescent rolls on the bottom and low fat cheese on top..then when I ate it, I took the crust off my portion on my plate..the meat I used was ground venison so meat was low fat as well..very very yummy with added onions, peppers, garlic and mushrooms..It is a good alternative to plain pizza or spaghetti.

Also working on some embroidered pillow cases for a change.

Oh, how I miss venison! My grandfather used to hunt every year, and we'd have venison at least once a week over the winter.

Our kitchen scale disappeared the last time we moved, so I've been eyeballing and using measuring cups since. emoticon It's definitely time to pick up another scale.. lol

THETURTLEBEAR 1/3/2013 11:20AM

Yup - I got out the food scale last night and revisited the portion size practice. I did pretty well. I was guessing on a 3 oz portion of steak and it was 2.7 oz, so my eyeballing is still on target...but I will keep checking anyway!

I probably measure 50% of my food, and eyeball the rest. I try to measure all the high calorie stuff, because if I underestimate that it could be disastrous.

Your pizza sounded really good (other than the venison) I know the meat is so much healthier for us but I have never been able to eat wild meat.

I measure grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds (I don't use oil, meat, dairy, or eggs), or ingredients when I'm assembling a recipe I think I will want to record to make again in the future. Fruits and veggies, I don't bother, because that's never what's going to put me over the top.

Jan1 New Beginnings

Tuesday, January 01, 2013

Well this is a day of new beginnings in more ways than one..

First it is the start of a New Year. Did you make resolutions? Only thing I resolved to do is to get back on track with dieting and exercise. I did watch what I ate today but didn't take time to exercise. Too cold outside to walk and have been fixing major issues with this new computer.

It is a new beginning with this computer. I totally quit on me yesterday and just bought it on December 19th and had it crash..so at first I was so frustrated that I couldn't find a telephone number to call HP for help so had boxed it back up to take back to Sam's...but this morning had clear mind and found the number to call and got a nice tech who walked me through completely restoring windows 8. It would not let me back up any of my files so I lost everything. I am thinking now it all started when I set up my emails through incredimail so afraid to set that up again so going to my main server site and doing emails from there..it is a pain but at least it works properly..I had a couple of games downloaded from Microsoft and lost them and when I reinstalled the computer I accidentally put in the wrong email addy so now cannot access the store to get the apps..but really guess it is best as I need to be more focused on the computer stuff I need to do and then have more time for SP and for working more at my crafts. so no need to download them and found I can play solitaire online instead..majohng as well..so really probably a bother but then I cannot get any other apps either so tomorrow the techie is to call me back and maybe I can get her to walk me through changing this to access it...we will see.

But think I have made a good start to the new year.

    A great start!

If you've got one, you can use a flash drive (sometimes called a thumb drive) to back up some things. I have my writing and some of my patterns backed up. My oldest uses an external hard drive to keep her stuff on, she says it was pretty cheap and it's easy to use. :)

I didn't make any resolutions, but I did reassess my goals. I always find this time of year is good to get focused again.

I am also still fighting with my desktop. I need to take it in this week. I have tried downloading new drivers. etc. and nothing is working. I have my laptop, but don't have any of my favorites on it, nor my music. Luckily, I was able to get a back-up done last week before it went completely wacky. I hope HP techs are able to get yours back working perfectly for you.

It sounds like you are off to a good start! It was too cold out for me too, so I used a Walk Away the Pounds DVD. My grandkids all came in there and walked with me, we had a regular "class" and by the end of it, 2 of the 4 of them had dropped out!!
