French Food Rules

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

I found this and thought it could fit adults as well as children..So here are my changes.
1. YOU are in charge of your food preparation...whether you eat at home, at work or dine out...You have control of what goes into your mouth at all times.
2. Avoid emotional eating...boy this can be a hard one..but when emotions get the better of us, sometimes it is better to step away from the table and go take a little walk or something...do not bring your emotions to the dinner table.
3. Plan scheduled meals..even if you have to get up earlier to prepare a lunch for work or if you think it will take too much time from your already tight schedule to sit down and plan your meals for the day everyday or plan for a weeks worth. Plan those fruit and veggies into your meals..don't always look to fast food or boxed mixes to get you by.
4. Sit down and eat together as a family. Hubby and I still sit down for our planned meals together. We only eat breakfast and a late lunch but these are done at our breakfast table and we do not allow interruptions..it is away from the tv and if phone rings we either ignore it or will excuse ourselves..our planned meals are just that..nothing else..Even when our son's were still at home, we had planned meal times..breakfast and supper..and they were expected to sit down and eat without interruptions..Just a family thing we always did.
5. Eat your veggies..In season, veggies and fruit seem easier to eat but you must plan more veggies even in winter.. Our lunch always has a meat, a bean (not green) for our starch and at least one green veggie like cabbage, broccoli or tossed salad..we have sides like pickles, pickled beets, pickled okra, 5 bean salad, etc as well..so get those green veggies into your diet.
6. Unlike my mother who would make us eat everything on our plate whether we liked it or not, we always had our boys to take a small bite of everything at least once and if they did not like it then they did not have to eat it..we never forced it on them..but then if they didn't like any of the food on the table they could not snack on junk food between meals either..they could snack on raw veggies or fruit but nothing else..surprising how as adults we have foods we think we hate and won't touch but sometimes when you prepare it a different way then you wind up liking it..Hubby is an example..he hated any kind of green veggie when we married but with steaming the veggies instead of cooking the nutrients out of it, he found out he liked them..now he expects a green veggie at every meal...(hate to say it but we still both draw the line on eating liver)
7.No snacking is the hardest I think for both of us...Hubby really doesn't have to worry as much on weight gain as I do as he stays so active that he never gains but I've found that I cannot do active mindless snacking. I have to figure my snacks in ahead of time and SP calorie counter helps..so I just prepare the amount I can eat for the calories but my snacking has changed from chips and cookies to nuts and fruit..but still I count those calories. I also find that chewing a sugarfree gum and drinking more water helps..Don't have to worry about drinking pop as neither of us like or dink it..water and tea are my mainstays
8. Slow food...this I think is the hardest for me to do and that is slow down and really chew my food. Growing up super thin and not liking to eat, I would hurriedly eat so I could get on to more fun things..then when I was in my teaching years, we may have 10 minutes to eat so learned over a period of time to eat way too fast. For last few years I've been trying to learn to slow down and really chew and taste my food and give my body time to tell me it is full..it really does make a difference.
9. Eat real food..All the boxed mixes and things that make it so easy and quick to prepare a meal should not even be in our pantries..it takes maybe 15minutes longer to make a dish from scratch than from a box..Learn to cook and eat with natural foods. Try to eat more veggies and fruit raw..Find an appliance you can use to make the prep time quicker..we grill a lot of our meats and I steam my veggies. We use the microwave to bake a potato and then throw it on the grill to crisp the skin. Preparing rice takes the longest for me as we prefer brown rice and it must be cooked longer. Soak your dry beans overnight in water or use your slow cooker for many meals..I will put in a whole frozen chicken at night and by morning it is done to debone..I may do this on a weekend and after deboning and skinning the cooked chicken I save the broth (fat skims off after being in refrigerator in one piece) and divide the chicken into 2 or more meals. It may take a little more effort to plan to eat healthier.
10. Relax!!Don't let preparing meals become a major chore..there will be times you will have to do something quick like fast food, etc..then choose something from a fast food place that is much healthier..Surprising some places offer healthier choices..find out ahead of time those healthier choices and then go for them in a pinch.

I love the list, we all need reminders , I do plan main meals ahead, it's the lighter meal I struggle with, I try to avoid bread which rules out a lot of snacks. Agree on use of steamer for veg and slow cooker/crock pot. I think I will use mine today for soup making , then they will help with my lighter meals dilemma.
Lets remover to enjoy our food ! Ree emoticon

This is a great list. I especially like the idea of having a meal with no interruptions. When we get together for family meals, I usually have to tell/ask my SIL to turn the TV off. He and my husband are avid watchers of football and we usually get together on Sundays. However, my DH rarely has lunch with me w/o the TV on. He watches METV -- a lot of old westerns. He watches and rewatches. This is a great enjoyment to him.
Have a great day! emoticon emoticon

Older than dirt

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

You have heard the expression "older than dirt"..well how old is dirt? Think about that one!!!!Some is really pretty new in the stuff that has just been composted from food trimmings and leaves..and then some that is crumbled and crushed from rocks..well that might be pretty old..and then when things die, they return to dirt and dust..so how old is dirt?...ok now that I've given you something to think about..

Do you creak and groan and moan about the stiff joints..well think we all will eventually suffer from this malady at some point in our lives..but the more we keep moving the less stiffness and aching will occur. Having RA I've learned if I give into my pains and sit still, I get worse so I have to keep moving..so my preferred exercise is walking. I really need to do other body exercises but partly it is more painful and mostly I'm lazy..yep I said it...I'm lazy..I found out how bad my hands had become and had not realized it until the other day but can not open jars and things anymore. I know they make the lids and all tamper proof but then there are some jars that are my own canned goods and I used to pop those lids right off..not anymore. I now have a trusty church key...you do know what that is or is that showing my age..back in my days the guys always had a church key on their key chains..to pop off the lids of a lady's soda pop..or their beer bottle which ever they happened to have..so now you know another thing today..what a church key is..

So let's all get MOVING!!!

You are so right....we all need to move more. Thanks for the reminder!

My MIL had problems with her hands too. She used this hand exerciser that looked like an inverted V that had a large spring in the bottom of the v. She swore by it. Unfortunately, I don't know where she purchased it.

I did know what a church key was :-)

Rug Hooking Demo

Monday, January 21, 2013

Well I did my rug hooking demo today for the art guild. We had several people from the community to show up and was so surprised at the turn out. I managed to make the demo for an hour and seems they had lots of questions..one lady is really wanting to start hooking so may offer her a private lesson or 2. But was pleased how it turned out.

Finally got my phone call from the pulmonary clinic reminding me of my yearly check up..so now they get to hear my hacky winter cough..air outside has been so dry that it causes the coughing to get worse..also sinus drainage doesn't help. But over all felt so good today. Only problem is that food has no taste due probably to the sinus issues..but that is a good thing as I don't want to eat as much. In fact I was way way low in my calorie count today so going to eat some cheese (baby bel lights) and almonds to bring it back to barely 1200 calories. I also got 20 minutes of walking in today so hope my back allows me to do that much or more each day now. Sunlight sure helps in the "feel good" department and air wasn't as chilly and wind wasn't blowing..so felt warmer today.

So all and all had a good Monday.

Sunday

Sunday, January 20, 2013

Wow I'm so surprised that this photo uploaded as usually it is too big a file and have to resize in corel..but just reinstalled my corel today and of course the computer went wonky..had to close the computer down and walk away from it while so went out and walked some..but back to the photo..I took this over a week ago..when we had the 2nd snow..really took the photo to show an online friend the bird feeder hubby made a few years ago..2 scrap pieces of wood and a mason jar..but don't know if you can see them, but there are 2 golden finches on the feeder..But this all is a lead up to what happened earlier today..the jar was empty and the little chickadees were still out looking for a hand out..heard a terrible noise out the window and this little chickadee had gotten up inside the jar and was flopping around trying to get out..I tried to get a photo but all I got was a blur..so shared this one instead..had to hurry out and rescue the poor little thing but think he is back since I filled the jar..or maybe his relatives..I so love to watch the birds on this feeder.

I used to feed them on a ledge over the windowfan (built-in) in the living room but the birds kept hitting the window..and in the summer one year (I always stop feeding in summer) I was tracing a design against the light of the window and fell through the window..it appears that they had weakened the glass so hubby forbid me to feed there anymore..so now they can bump my studio window s all they want..but do notice 2 panes are cracked in there probably caused by the birds..and I really think I need to get hubby to take the a/c unit out of the window and really clean it this spring..hard to find a decent spot to take a photo..bird pooh you know..they are messy buggers..

Sinus infection has gotten worse..I'm walking around cold all day long and hot at night..has made my hormones funny..have no taste for food..head is stopped up but nose is running..I know it isn't a cold as get this sinus crude from time to time when allergies kick in..but this time think the outside air is dry..low humidity so therefore it has dried them out and now they are stopped up..feel pretty good except for the aggravation..but upside is I'm not eating much..only can taste salty and sweet and not much sweet so nothing appeals to me..I've struggled to make my calorie count last 2 days but going to drink a cup of cocoa which will make it for me today..barely!!

Slowed down my walk and have only gotten 15 minutes per day in..back has been giving me fits again..but wanted you all to see the newest photo taken last week with hubby and Miss Molly..I look so much slimmer..

Our journey in life

Friday, January 18, 2013

Our journey in life takes many twists and turns and some ups and downs..Some are happy time and some are sad times and some are even scary..but over all in this journey of life we become stronger if we keep pushing ourselves and challenging ourselves. Sparkpeople has sure challenged me and pushed be to be stronger not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well...I'm not who I was in 2008 when I first joined here. I made the mistake of dropping out from here a year later and after returning last year, I've realized that I need SP in my life continually and also all my SP friends I've made here..We are on this journey together becoming stronger people. Just wanted to tell you all "thank-you".

Feeling much better today..after a good nights sleep and sniffling salt water my sinuses seemed to have cleared. and back to my usual routine helps as well. Got my first walk in today as the weather is perfect. Wind is a little chilly but nice and dry and sunny. Going for another walk soon. Diet is doing good as well..Hope everyone has a great Friday or Saturday wherever you may be in this world. emoticon
