Garden time

Sunday, May 26, 2013

Thought you might like a peek at our garden. The barrels in front are our potatoes. We don't eat many potatoes and just like new potatoes with our fresh green beans. We have planted7 different varieties of beans and peas this year. Our corn rotted so we won't be having any of it. But it is another veggie neither of us likes much. Our squash, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers have blooms so it won't be long now. Asparagus in in the top section of the photo and not sure you can see how it ferns out when over and we let it grow to produce a more abundant crop next spring. Our mint, sage, rosemary and garlic are in the far right bed. It is so thick with these herbs that no weeds grow there now. Nothing like munching on fresh mint as we walk the garden. We used to make a garden twice this size but downsized it last year. Only one of our sons likes the veggies we give them. The rest are into too much junk food now. But the 2 younger sons are growing some things of their own now. It is too much in their blood not to. One has a good potato patch and other has herbs, tomaotes, peppers and cucumbers. He enjoys making pickles. His wife is learning to make jams too. So think the tradtion will carry on though not on a big scale like we have always had. There is nothing like eating fresh veggies from the work of your hands. And we freeze the beans and peas so we eat well in the winter as well. Love this time of year!!!

Oh , I love the garden. It is impressive. Thanks for giving me the motivation to keep going with mine. Every year when I start planting everything and it takes days, I wonder why I am crazy enough to love gardening and canning. Then, I eat the first onion, carrot, cucumber, tomato, etc. and I know why I do it. emoticon It's been passed down through the generations here, too. My 10-year old daughter has really taken an interest and she has become so much help for me.
I love summer!

What a lovely garden! I would love to grow a few things. My husband thinks that all of the deer and rabbits would eat it. But I think just a few tomatoes, some peppers and maybe a cucumber or two would be good!

Impressive!!! I barely keep up with my 15x15 victory patch - a few beans, peas, carrots and spinach, plus one tomato plant. My mint was all killed off this i winter - i didn't think that was even possible! Can't wait to see how your harvest turns out later on!

Thankful

Saturday, May 25, 2013

I'm so very thankful for the good Lord giving me 34 wonderful years with my best friend and husband. Have been having a lovely anniversary today. Laid back and restful. Doing the things we love. Puttering around our little piece of heaven on earth.

Miss Molly's big brother

Friday, May 24, 2013

Most here have heard me talk of Miss Molly. She is my youngest son's daughter. She is named for my mother and grandmother. She has a big brother who is our step grandson. We are so proud of him and so glad he is a part of our life along with his mom and Miss Molly. Johnny graduates tonight and then heads to aviation school on Monday. His father and grandfather were both pilots for American airlines so he is following in their footsteps. But he is also wanting to get a 2nd degree in engineering. He is smart enough and determined enough to do it though both are grueling fields to go into alone. Anyway this is a picture of my youngest son Sean, his wife (our daughter in love) Carmen, Miss Molly and Johnny. Just had to share a little of my family.

What a lovely family, and how wonderful that Johnny aspires to do these things! It seems like so many of the kids today don't want to do much of anything and it is refreshing and inspiring to see a young person who has goals and will work to meet them!

Life is short

Thursday, May 23, 2013

We need to live like there is no tomorrow but in a healthy way. Put people, especially family and friends before things. And remove those things from our lives that are not relevant or that bring us down. Even if it means no longer having friends that bring us down. Life is short. Do what you can to help others expecting nothing in return. And above all make time for yourself as well.

Bottle tree

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

I have been wanting a botttle tree for a few years now. Last year hubby cut down a large cedar tree as his sister and I wanted a larger bottom part with branches to set on our dining tables. She is putting butterflies on hers and I have owls on mine. But the top he saved for me a bottle tree for the yard. We tot it cemented in on Saturday and was set up enough and the rains are over so got my blue bottles out and put them on the tree. Don't think I drank all that wine. I didn't. In fact I drink very little wine and only on special occasions. But many years ago, I collected bottles to make into wind chimes and these were some that were given to me from different people. I have boxes of bottles in my lean-to shed. Going to start cleaning out the shed soon and will save a few to make a few more wind chimes and then getting rid of most. Will take to recycling center.

Thankfully we did not get the storms but about 3 inches of rain and it cleared out the privet hedge pollen for awhile so stayed outside this morning. Now will be a prisoner inside again until next rain or until the privet quits blooming.
