Board Certified by Coca-Cola!

With Halloween approaching and these recent events in the news we cannot just sit back and do nothing. We must stop the destruction of our children.

The American Academy of Family Physicians has announced a corporate sponsorship with Coca-Cola and is also accepting an undisclosed amount of money from them as well.

The AAFP today announced a corporate partnership with The Coca-Cola Co., in which the beverage giant will provide a grant for the Academy to develop consumer education content related to beverages and sweeteners for the AAFP's award-winning consumer health and wellness Web site, FamilyDoctor.org.

According to the Kansas City Business Journal, Coca-Cola is providing a grant of an unspecified amount to the AAFP for the project.
Now it comes full circle. The drug industry manipulates and controls the drug information given to doctors and now soda companies fund the nutrition information. Good work guys! Even if the AAFP changes their mind due to public outcry it won’t be enough for me. They need to clearly state publically that drinking soda has been a significant contributor to the epidemic of overweight, heart disease and cancer in this country and is disease and death promoting. It is designed to be addicting and serving it to children is child abuse. What if the AAFP accepted funding from Phillip Morris and promoted smoking in moderation?

P.S. Just in case you didn’t know, the American Dietetic Association, the organization that certifies nutritionists and dietitians, also accepts money from Coca-Cola, as well as PepsiCo, Kellogg’s, General Mills, Mars and the National Dairy Council.

I know this was written awhile ago, but I thought I would give my input on this. I agree that when large corporations fund things it should make us wary of the results but at the same time I believe that funding needs to come from somewhere. Maybe we can convince the companies that it's in their better interest to fund things so that they can change their products to better suit the results as opposed to changing the results to suit the products?

Just read "In Defense of Food" excellent book, talking about food and nutrition research, has suggestions on how to avoid problems with this sort of thing.

thanks for the post.

unfortunately they do not get paid to be honest. This is why we need to advocate self education in this area. We need to start taking responisibility as wives, mothers, parents, etc. and do the research on our own. We cannot trust that these organizations have our best interest at heart. emoticon
FLUTTERBUGCE 10/28/2009 7:30AM

I'd like these industries to be more closely monitored. Both of them! We're trusting them with our health for goodness sake. The least they could do is be honest with us as consumers. That may be too much to ask however!

Thanks for sharing - information is power!
LOSINGLINNDY 10/27/2009 11:44PM

This is shocking. Thanks for sharing the article.
LIV2RIDE 10/27/2009 9:15PM

Interesting article. No different than just about any other organization out there. It's all about the money. It's a shame that these organizations feel that taking money from companies that contribute the the obesity epidemic is ok and acceptable. IT'S NOT OK TO SELL YOUR SOUL FOR A DOLLAR!!!!

From IdealBite.com ~ This tip on buying fresh produce.

“Are your fruits and veggies blessed with good genes? Peel your eyes off the silver screen and check the number on the little label on your apple or squash. It'll help you make sure what you're buying is organic and non-genetically modified. Kind of a big deal.”

“Look for the PLU codes on the labels stuck on your fruits and veggies.
A four-digit number means it's conventionally grown.
A five-digit number beginning with 9 means it's organic.
A five-digit number beginning with 8 means it's genetically modified.”

How fabulous to head to my store with this knowledge!

You can go to the website and sign up for a daily hint on making your life greener!

Will use this process when I head to the store next. I just went shopping last night but had missed this blog.

Thanks a bunch for the information..
AMALIA8 9/1/2009 7:29AM

That's neat. I'll never remember it but it's neat LOL. Thanks for sharing!
NANNIOF8 8/31/2009 1:36PM

Thank you so much for sharing this info with us :)
I'm going to check out the codes next time I'm shopping and I'm going to check the codes for the produce I have now.
I'm from Canada as well, and I'm sure it must be the same here as in the US as a lot of our produce come from the States.
NO # 8 produce for me !!!!!!!!
FLUTTERBUGCE 8/27/2009 8:49AM

Wow! I didn't know that! Thank you very much for sharing that information!
JESSYLANNE 8/27/2009 12:39AM

Thank you! I didn't know anything about the 8...Like Laserthecat said, maybe it's different here in Canada. In front of me there is an organic apple which number starts with a 9, and an organic mango... same thing. So it should be the same in canada than US. it makes sense because most of fruits we buy here are made in US.
thank you so much! I'm gonna check the number 8 now!! now way I'll eat transgenic produces without knowing it!
VIVRE5 8/26/2009 11:18PM

ty so much for the info!!!!!
LIV2RIDE 8/26/2009 9:38PM

This is great information! I found this article a couple months ago. I used to think the numbers for just for the cashiers.
SOMASLIM 8/26/2009 9:11PM

    Good to know. Thanks.
WILD4STARS 8/26/2009 3:07PM

I just got home from the grocery store and checked out the numbers and it's true. Everything that was in the organic section was 5 digits starting with 9, the rest were 4 digits. I didn't see any 5 digits starting with an 8.

If you ever thought you would be interested in trying a vegan diet this might be for you. Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is promoting a 21 Day Vegan Diet starting September 8. They have meal plans, recipes, everything you need to give the vegan lifestyle a try. It's only 3 weeks - what have you got to lose? Maybe a pound or two and some bad eating habits??

Check it out, see if it's something you would be interested in.

I've been vegetarian for several years and have been wanting to transition to vegan. This just showed up in my in-box today. I think it's a sign! I just wanted to share for anyone else who might be where I am.

Comfort Food Made Better

Thursday, August 06, 2009

This was in my in-box from Whole Foods Market. It sounds pretty good, and better than the traditional high fat, low fiber Mac N Cheese. I think I'll be trying this soon. Thought I would share.

Recipe:
Stovetop Whole Wheat Macaroni and Cheese

Using whole wheat pasta and flour gives the finished dish a hearty texture, aroma and flavor.

Ingredients
8 ounces dry whole wheat elbow macaroni
1 cup nonfat milk
2 tablespoons whole wheat pastry flour
1 teaspoon dry mustard
Cayenne to taste (optional)
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper to taste

Method
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add macaroni and cook until al dente, 10 to 12 minutes. Drain well.

Meanwhile, whisk together milk, flour, mustard and cayenne in a large saucepan until completely blended then cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened, 6 to 8 minutes. Add cheeses and stir gently until melted, then add drained pasta to sauce. Season with salt and pepper, stir well and serve hot.

Nutrition
Per serving (about 5oz/156g-wt.): 370 calories (100 from fat), 12g total fat, 7g saturated fat, 30mg cholesterol, 370mg sodium, 50g total carbohydrate (5g dietary fiber, 3g sugar), 19g protein

Thanks for the recipe. I will try this soon. Yesterday I had a box of lean cuisine mac and cheese and was disappointed in the taste. I know I can do it better myself.

Mmmm looks yummy. I wish I could send the rain your way, we've had too much of it. My sister fly into Miami yesterday and I checked the weather and it's suppose to be raining all week. What's it like now?

Awesome, thanks for sharing. I am vegan, but my husband is not. I have been a little concerned about his eating as his weight is going up as mine goes down. Maybe this would be a good way to make him a skinny version of his old favorite.

Your Kidneys are Safe but Hang on to Your Thighs !!

Thursday, July 02, 2009

WARNING Most of you have read the scare mail about the person whose kidneys were stolen while he was passed out. While that was an "urban legend," this one is not. It's happening every day. I'm sending this "warning" only to a few of my closest friends. You too may have been a victim -- read on.

My thighs were stolen from me during the night of August 3rd a few years ago. It was just that quick. I went to sleep in my body and woke up with someone else's thighs.

The new ones had the texture of cooked oatmeal. Who would have done such a cruel thing to legs that had been wholly, if imperfectly, mine for years? Whose thighs were these? What happened to mine?

I spent the entire summer looking for them. I searched, in vain, at pools and beaches, anywhere I might find female limbs exposed. I became obsessed. I had nightmares filled with cellulite and flesh that turns to bumps in the night. Finally, hurt and angry, I resigned myself to living out my life in jeans and Sheer Energy pantyhose.

Then, just when my guard was down, the thieves struck again. My rear end was next. I knew it was the same gang, because they took pains to match my new rear end (although badly attached at least three inches lower than the original) to the thighs they had stuck me with earlier.

Now my rear complemented my legs, lump for lump. Frantic, I prayed that long skirts would stay in fashion.

Two years ago I realized my arms had been switched. One morning while fixing my hair, I watched, horrified but fascinated, as the flesh of my upper arms swung to and fro with the motion of the hairbrush.

This was really getting scary. My body was being replaced, cleverly and fiendishly, one section at a time. In the end, in deepening despair, I gave up my T-shirts.

What could they do to me next? Age? Age had nothing to do with it. Age was supposed to creep up, unnoticed and intangible, something like maturity. NO, I was being attacked, repeatedly and without warning.

That's why I've decided to share my story. I can't take on the medical profession by myself. Women of America, wake up and smell the coffee!

That isn't really "plastic" those surgeons are using. You know where they're getting those replacement parts, don't you? The next time you suspect someone has had a face "lifted," look again! Was it lifted from you? Check out those tummy tucks and buttocks raisings. Look familiar? Are those your eyelids on that movie star?

I think I finally may have found my thighs...and I hope that Cindy Crawford paid a really good price for them!

This is NOT a hoax! This is happening to women in every town every night. Warn your friends!

Good one. It is amazing how we do not notice earlier.
JULIEN* 8/15/2009 2:09AM

: ) Actually, it's a little sad. I go to school in San Diego and our school warned us about getting attacked for our organs if we go across the border to drink and end up in the wrong place in the wrong time.

I would like to know who to contact to get some of these lifted parts. I've always had the "needs to be traded in parts" that I'd like to trade in. Any info would be helpful...I'm desperate.
