Today's Focus

Thursday, July 03, 2014

I have had a cough and a cold for about 2 weeks and i am done with it!! Finally feeling much better and did not wake coughing during the night.

So my 3 goals for today are:

Laundry - a couple of loads - DONE - only had one load to do.

Dr. appointment to have by BP meds checked. - DONE - went well except my BP is elevated, so she is changing my meds and ordered an antibiotic for the cough. And i go back in a couple of weeks.

Plant the impatiens that are looking so forlorn in their little pots. - the plants will have to wait until it cools off later this evening - just too warm out there right now.

"Under the Weather"

Monday, June 23, 2014

This past week i used the expression "under the weather" a couple of times and just got to wondering where this phrase came from. Found this explanation - among a few others - at urbandictionary.com.

under the weather
During the days when ships were powered by sail, the captains log documented everything that happended during the day. As sickness could spread rapidly on a ship, there were often times where the number of sailers that were ill exceeded the space provided in the log to record their names. During these times, the excess names of the sick were recorded in the next column, which was reserved for the weather conditions of the day. Thus, it was not unusual for an ill sailor to be listed "under the weather".

How many other expressions do we use daily and never stop and wonder where they came from??
And isn't it amazing the things we can learn on the internet!!

Pendleton's Walk for Life

Sunday, June 22, 2014

Still a bit "under the weather" - i wonder where that phrase came from. Will have to research. So will be staying home - not going to church this morning. So will just do some Bible study here at home.

Looks like a warm day - right now it is 55 with a predicted high of 84 - and will probably get that warm. Oh, i do love the warm weather. My son likes it about 68 - and not much higher. So he is not too excited about the warm weather to come.

This weekend we had the Walk for Life here in Pendleton. My friend Elaine is a cancer-survivor and is active in the local group. I had been interested, but had not taken part. But after losing my son, Greg, to cancer this past year, I became much more aware of the program. I decorated a luminaria in honor of Greg and one in honor of Tom, a veteran friend who is battling cancer now. The event took place Friday night at the Middle School - from 6 p.m. to 6 am. Saturday morning. The luminaries are placed around the track and there are people walking the track all night - beautiful!! I had wanted to stay and walk the track at least once, but the school is on the south hill and it was a bit windy - and with this cold and cough , i decided it would probably not be such a good idea. But, Elaine was going to pick up the luminaries for me so I can send Greg's to my sister in Medford.

This afternoon will probably be knitting and watching more Jesse Stone movies - we have all of them and i have not watched them for a while. Also, am going to do a bit of weeding and plan to take a short walk in the neighborhood.

Hope everyone is having a good day -

What a lovely idea, I bet the luminaries look lovely.
We had a walk for life this Sunday too but ours are in the daytime and the ladies dress up in pink tutus or else wear pink clothing. It's for such a good cause and I did one a few years ago before I got ill. I would like to do another but I just haven't been fit enough but now things are on the up and I've lost my weight maybe next year! emoticon

I hope you're feeling a bit better now barb, take care emoticon

You were wise to keep warm and not stick around in the cold. We're having much the same temps here. It is deliciously cool in the morning but picks up the temp in the mid-80's during the day. We have the even breeze that comes through from the coast or the mountains and cools it down again. Absolutely perfect.

I had a bit of a tummy bug yesterday. Still not up to par, but better. A good day to stay inside and make some more earrings.

Have fun watching the movies. If you're like me, I have to get up and walk around or do some stretches when I start feeling stiff. Otherwise tonight I can't sleep and tomorrow I can't move.

Thursday, June 19

Thursday, June 19, 2014

Well, i did have good intentions! Getting to the club at least 3 times each week. But will have to start next week. I have had a scratchy throat the past couple of days and woke this morning with a full-blown cold. Don't remember the last time i actually had a cold - so guess this one is making up for it.

So will be staying in for at least a couple of days.

But i do have my knitting - yeah!! and a couple of books to read.

Got the first one at the library. "The Aviator's Wife" by Melanie Benjamin - a fiction and history meld story about the relationship of Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Looks like it will be a good read.

The second one is "Wild Goose Chase" by Mark Batterson. The Celtic Christians' name for the Holy
Spirit is "the Wild Goose". And, seems like a very fitting name for the Spirit of God that is so personal and yet quite mysterious - whom we cannot track or tame.

Looks like it will warm up today - after the rain and overcast, gloomy days - will be welcome. Right now - just after 8 a.m. - it is 58 with a predicted high of 84. So looks like Summer may come soon.

No excuse, a cold needs exercise too, plenty of rest and exercise. Those books sound good, maybe you could exercise between reading-goodluck.

Another Goal to Track

Tuesday, June 17, 2014

I an actually still drinking water - really had not thought i would actually drink water consistently but have for 60 days. I have a glass on the kitchen counter that i keep filled - i like the water room temperature. When i empty it, i put a mark on the white board on our fridge - then fill the glass again. And my son nudges me too and that helps - he is a water-drinker but wants his cold from the fridge.

So have decided to add another goal to track. I have a membership at the local Club 24, but have not taken advantage of it like i should. So my current goal is to go at least 3 times a week. A good start!!

OK - so now i have posted this. And that means that i do it!!

My motto this past month has been " Just Do It!" and that has actually helped me accomplish a few things that i probably would not have done.

Way to go!!! Those are biggeeees!

Yesterday the acupuncturist gave me a copy of a study she'd done about osteoporosis in women . . . one of most important things is weight-bearing exercise - 30 minutes a day. Walking is top on the list. Any movement is good.

We can do this!
