Sugar House Park is managed by the Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Department. Sugar House Park is one of the city's largest and most beautiful places to enjoy the out-of-doors within the city. There is a creek that winds through the park and fills a duck pond on the west side of the park. There is a wonderful trail (1.6 miles long) that outlines the park's outer edge that is great for walking. The park's 7 pavilions can be reserved family gatherings and company picnics, barbecues, or other group functions. Check out the two playgrounds, several sport fields/courts, the rolling hills (perfect for sledding in winter),and 110 acres of grass.
Sugar House Park is the center of numerous events held here each year such as the 4th of July fireworks, and the Strut Your Mutt fundraiser (for homeless pets) usually held in May. The park is open daily from 8 am to 10 pm. Dogs of all sizes are welcome throughout the park, but they must be leashed and owners are asked to clean up after their pets.
Most people do not realize that Sugar House Park occupies the original site of the Utah State Prison. Brigham Young ordered the penitentiary to be built in 1853 and the adobe structure was completed in 1854. The first two inmates were Paiute Indians accused of murdering William W. Potter. Later inmates included jailed polygamists after Reynolds vs. the United States declared polygamy to be illegal.
Comments From Other Members:
I love walking around Sugar House Park. I usually walk around the walking and biking half of the drive around loop, but I've always wanted to try the trail. The park is a very good location for me, close to school, so I can go for a quick half hour walk before classes in the afternoon if I plan well.
A few years ago (2004, I think) when I was still in high school, I had a summer physical education class that met at the park. It's a great place for a workout.
