The Veloway is southwest Austin's first trail exclusively for bicycles and rollerblading. Located on more than 100 acres in the Slaughter Creek Metropolitan Park, the Veloway is a 3.1 mile paved asphalt loop 23 feet wide. It is totally free of motorized traffic. Riders ride in a one-way clockwise direction. Helmets are highly recommended and required for kids. The trail is open from dawn to dusk. The trail can be accessed from Loop 1 Mopac, about a mile south of Slaughter Lane, or from Bowie High School on Slaughter during non-school hours.

Thanks for the info about the veloway! I live nearish and have wanted to try it. I just got a new bike :)) and am excited.
Just having a little information makes it sound less scary.

The veloway is pretty, but its not a long enough bike ride. I ride in the neighborhoods surrounding Circle C, as well as Circle C itself, though Slaughter feels a little dangerous due to speeding traffic, so on Slaugther I ride on the sidewalk.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the veloway! I am counting the days until the time change so I can ride there after work again!! It's a safe place to ride in a beautiful setting.
As a newbie, it wasn't immediately clear to me that the ALL traffic on veloway travels in clockwise position, for there is a stripe down the middle of the pavement similar to the center stripe on a real road. Take heed and travel in clockwise position at all times.
The Veloway is a great ride for cyclists of all abilities. It's also a good warm up for safe street rides in Circle C and on South MoPac. After cycling, triathletes can run in the neighborhood adjacent to the Veloway; there is a circular park in the center.
If you decide to go, be sure to drive carefully and be aware of cyclists on La Crosse as you approach the Veloway; cyclists watch for car doors and parked cars pulling out.
On the Veloway, keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife -- bunnies, roadrunners, deer, even the occasional tarantula. It's also gorgeous during wildflower season, especially since it is on the same street as the Wildflower Research Center!
