A full description of the entire 84 miles of trails for hiking, snow shoeing, horse back riding, cross country skiing and in some places, snowmobiling is here:
www.fogvg.org/trail_user/description.php
The trail begins in the Genesee Valley Park:
Miles 0-2 Paved trail. Access the trail from the parking lot off Elmwood Avenue at Genesee Valley Park . This is the lot next to the swimming pool on the west side of the Genesee River . The trail that leaves the parking lot is the Genesee Riverway Trail. Soon you will come to the Erie Canalway Trail which goes left over the Waldo Nielsen Bridge . For the Greenway, continue straight ahead over the arched bridge. Just beyond the foot of the bridge is a sign on your left. It describes the three trails that meet at this point, the Genesee Valley Greenway, the Genesee Riverway Trail and the Erie Canalway Trail. The Riverway Trail extends straight ahead of you along the river bank. It joins the Greenway after about half a mile. The Greenway curves diagonally ahead to the right. The Canalway Trail continues directly right toward Greece .
Genesee Valley Greenway
The Genesee Valley Greenway is one of hundreds of greenways being developed across the nation along old canals, abandoned rail beds, and riverbanks. It passes through scenic woodlands, river and stream valleys, rolling farmlands, steep gorges, and historic villages located in sixteen towns in Monroe, Livingston, Wyoming, Allegany, and Cattaraugus counties in New York State.
The Genesee Valley Greenway is open for winter activities such as snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling. Snowmobiling is allowed on open sections of the Greenway in Monroe and Livingston counties, south of Ballantyne Road in the Town of Chili in Monroe County. Snowmobiling is prohibited on the Greenway north of Ballantyne Road. Courteous respect for other trail users will ensure a positive experience for everyone.
The Greenway is also closed to snowmobiles between Morgan Road in Chili and Route 253 (Scottsville-W.Henrietta Road) in Wheatland until ramps are constructed at the Route 383 (Scottsville Road) trail intersection.
