Hi,

Make a list of those great foods, then find healthier version recipes for next time you are at the store.

If you replace the oil with plain applesauce and the eggs with egg whites only, then you can make a pretty good cake without as many calories. I don't do it everyday, of course, just for "occasions". And sometimes it's just okay to splurge (SOMETIMES).

Everyone has their own list. As for tuna, you might replace it with canned salmon, and turn that into salmon patties or in place of tuna. Or it might be what your mixing your tuna with that's causing the problem. Try eating it plain and see what happens.

Can't help ya with the Tomatoes or veggies... sorry! That's something you'll have to work out.

Every one has their own staple list. I guess what I would recommend is that you sit down and figure out what you already know how to cook and what your family likes to eat.

Shop around the outside of the store. The aisles in the middle contain all the prepackaged foods, and that means salt, fat, and sugar. The outside cases contain fresh fruits and veggies, meats, the deli, and dairy products.

Don't shop hungry. Grab an apple or other piece of fruit before you go.

Read labels and know that "high fructose corn syrup" means "poison". Avoid it like the PLAGUE.

My staples list includes:

Ezekial Bread (in the health food section)
Canned tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste (for sauces)
lentils and other dried beans
brown rice
popcorn
tuna
salmon
oatmeal
hummus
tabbouli
falafel
frozen boneless,skinless chicken
frozen ground turkey
other frozen meats
frozen veggies
cake mixes
canned soups or bagged soup starter (whichever is on sale)
sugar free jello
assorted cheeses
eggs
assorted rice cakes
tea
Splenda
whole wheat and white flour
cornmeal
nuts
raisins

And some other odds and ends, depending on what's on sale.

The best place to keep all this stuff if you don't have room in your cabinets is in a back hallway closet somewhere that you can turn into a pantry.

Good luck!!

I used to use one of those services - ours was Dream Dinners. I loved going and it made cooking meals really convenient. I did still have to go to the store for breakfast, lunch, and snack foods. I also realized that from home I would have made healthier choices for some ingredients and used higher quality meat... but maybe that problem was particular to the store.

If you have the money, there are services that will package your meals for you and you just go home and cook it.

They measure out the spices, cut the veggies, prepare the meat, marinate what needs marinating, and package it in neat bags or containers. They then add in an instruction sheet.

All you do is schedule a time to pick it up, pick a meal, pick it up, take it home, and follow the directions.

The result is for a fee you can get all the prep stuff and decisions made for you.

I don't know what there is in your area, the local one here is "Let's Dish".

good luck

I second the idea of going after you had a good meal, also, it helps me to go when I'm tired or exhausted. Then all I want to do is go home as soon as possible. I also plan my meals out for the week ahead and write down the items that I need. I also try to organize my shopping list by aisle. I visualize the store I'm going to visit and write down the items in the order of the aisles in the store.

Some of my staple foods are
- whole wheat pasta
- whole grain rice (I prefer instant)
- frozen vegetables (fresh ones always go bad in my house)
- chicken breast
- whole wheat bread
- whole wheat tortillas
- canned diced Tomatoes (no salt added)
Perishables that I buy every week or two include:
- cheese (for sandwiches and for cooking)
- turkey breast
- fruit
- cereal
- yogurt
- milk
- fruit juice
- lettuce

Staple items are the basic things that you always have on hand. Like your choice of bread, healthy toppings, deli meat, yogurt... just the basics so you can prepare meals without having to think so hard.

Kebuzzi - That is so helpful to see your staple items. It really is hard to know what to buy and finding someone who's gotten that far is very helpful. Thanks.

I don't know if you have a service like this in your area, but I order my groceries online through PeaPod from Stop & Shop. I can sit and home and scroll through all the specials, buy all the healthy, whole foods that sound good (and are on sale!) and plan specific meals for the week. It keeps me from being tempted by the treats in the actual store, and the quality of the fresh produce, fish & meat is really good.

Making a list seems to help me a lot. I sit down and plan meals for a week or two, make my grocery list from my mealplan, and then go to the store. I try to make sure I go right after I have a meal or snack so that I am not "hunger-shopping". If it is not on my list, I don't get it (and no adding to the list while at the store, that's just cheating). If I see something that looks good, I make a note of it and it can go on next weeks list if it still sounds good.

The only thing I do give myself some latitude with is fresh produce and seafood. With seafood, I go with what is freshest and looks best, and with produce I do the same.

They best thing to do is go to the supermarket either right after you workout or right after you have a full meal so you're not tempted as much by unhealthy items. There are so many great healthy products now and super healthy dishes are so easy to make.
I always have on hand:

*Whole wheat pasta
*Boca vegan burgers
*Light english muffins
*Light ice cream
*Fat free american cheese
*Light whole wheat bread
*Egg beaters
*Chicken breast
*Chunk white tuna
*Light mayo
*Fiber one
*Nonfat yogurt
*Fruit preserves
*Almond butter
*Apples
*Bananas
*Unsweetened light almond milk
*Tomatoes

Of course there is other stuff I have, but I make so much stuff with those staples. I have a great healthy cookbook it's The Pump Engergy Kitchen. I eat at their restaurant a few times a week. It's all SUPER healthy and very tasty.

I would love to make some great dishes for my family. But, I am overwhelmed when I go to the grocery store. I see all this great food... a lot of it not healthy...I love fresh whole food but can't seem to keep the junk out. I also feel like it's not easy for me to decide on a recipe. I just don't cook much. How can I make this easier to avoid fast food? One good thing is that a Whole Foods Store is opening up in the next 6 months or so.
