Hi Linda I really enjoy reading your posts. It is nice to think of you so far away but on the same journey as I am. You sound as if you lead a busy life with your teaching and family. Hope you take some time out for yourself. I think most women put themselves at the back of the queue when it comes to time. Anyway the vacation sounds lovely - you will have to get out there on that beach - lucky you. It is really a strange coincidence but we are going to the beach in August with all the family - son, daughter, their partners and four grandchildren for a holiday. We have rented a big house on the coast (eastern coast of UK about half way up). Anyway hope you enjoy your time together as a family - those are some of the best times I think don't you.
I live in the English lake district in northern UK. It is a beautiful area and very popular with tourists (Beatrix Potter coutry) so I am blessed having all this on my doorstep.
Have a good weekend and hope we can etalk again soon.

I do wish you well on your weigh in day. I haven't really established a weigh in day yet; I need to do that. I teach at a local university; I teach early childhood education courses and we're in between semesters now so I can work either there or at home on most days. I do teach two nights a week now; evening courses at a small community college that is located near the university.

The weather is beautiful here today, in South Carolina, USA. It's much too hot, however, for this early in June so thank goodness for air conditioning.

I also have two little grandsons - one is 6 and one is 2. Our family is going to the beach next week for a vacation. My neighbor has a house on the coast so we get it one week in the summer and my children and one son in law and 2 grandchildren and I go. My husband doesn't really like the beach so he rarely goes for more than a day or so.

I'm looking forward to it. Since I've been so negligent in the area of exercising, perhaps I'll make myself begin walks down the beach and then bring that habit back home. I hope so.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Hi Linda - glad you are having a good day. What sort of work do you do? Working from home can mean creeping into the kitchen I bet. I am trying to plan my food for the whole day as I find that I can then stick to the plan better and I am prepared so I do not just grab something/anything (usually high calorie) Had a lovely day today in the garden with my daughter and grand daughter just playing in the sunshine (weather in the Uk is brilliant at the moment). Have bought myself a cross trainer/stepper thingy and have decided to try and do 30 minutes five days a week. So far I love it and just watch TV and step away. I do not watch much TV so I find the time soon goes. Well hoping for an active weekend as I will se my three grandsons and, if the weather holds, will be out and about.
Have a good weekend everyone. Back on Monday - weigh in day - wish me luck
Regards to you all.

Today is going well, so far. I do better when I work in the office than at home. I've been at home for two weeks and I know I munch much more. I have appointments in the office this afternoon so since I've done ok so far today at home, hopefully, I can finish the day well. I also know I need to get to bed at a decent time rather than staying up 'till who knows what time, watching old movies and eating whatever I can find. Those are my downfalls and I must stay away. Your dinner sounds lovely and will be a great way to avoid calories! I haven't even thought about dinner yet but must do that at some point, this afternoon. Take care, all and have a wonderful afternoon. I, personally, know that when I pray, also, I am stronger and avoid my downfalls.

Hi again Linda - So sorry you had a not so good day yesterday - better luck with today. I am trying to stay focused at the minute because for the first time since I joined I have felt really hungry. I am trying to do extra exercise and keep moving as much as possible during the day so I may be overdoing it a bit in that way. Anyway have got a lovely bean casserole with loads of veggies for dinner tonight and am going to have a nice glass of wine!!!! (I will enter it honest) I am vegetarian and have been for the last 30 years and I honestly think that that has helped me keep my weight down up to now.
Hope you all out there have a great day.

Reading these posts is a huge encouragement to me. Yesterday, I began strong, but by late evening and late tv watching (which is a huge addictive attraction for me), I found myself munching whatever I could find. So far, so good on this day. Perhaps, I can make myself go to bed at a reasonable time this evening and not turn on the tv at all this evening. I teach this evening at a community college so perhaps that activity can make me more able to stick to proper meals and snacks. I hope the day will go very smoothly for all of you who are on this journey of better health and weight loss.

Linda so nice to hear you so positive. I too have a grown up family who have left home and I agree that the celebrations when we all get together usually mean extra food and drink but I think as we only do it every so often why not just enjoy it. Tomorrow is another day. A relative of mine used to say 'this too will pass' I use to just think it meant that if things are bad it will pass but I now think it applies to good things as well. I use it as a sort of reminder that if things are good enjoy them because things change so quickly. I am having a pretty good week so far. The weather here in the Uk is lovely at the moment and I am out and about walking and gardening. I looked after my grand daughter yesterday (aged 2) and there were 12,000 step on my counter last night!! Have a good day.
Hi Patricia - I too thought how lucky I was to find Sparkpeople and I have come across many other users from our neck of the woods. The sites from the UK are not half as good as this one are they. I am determined to lose this weight (28 lbs to start but now I have lost 7 lbs only 21 to go)
Regards to you both and everyone else out there reading this.
Come on guys and gals we know we can do this and change our lives with Sparkpeople.

Hi everyone, just checking in, have been on the programme 3 weeks now and have lost 10lbs and I am feeling GREAT. I have gone from a 'Couch Potato' to being a very active person in that time. I find the food and exercise tracker the best and 'The Water'from hating to exercise I now walk about 1 hr.per day and swim for half an hour as well as my stretching exercises. No more just going to the Gym and crawling into the Jacussi without work. i hope to have lost my first stone by the end of June. Not bad for a 58yr old....

Thanks so much for the encouragement. Today is a new day and I'm going to follow your advice. It is 1:20 and I haven't fallen off today. I appreciate your advice and encouragement very much. It really does help. Actually, my children are grown and gone away; we just celebrated here at home with our youngest, our son, who is 23. He, being 6' 1" and very thin and works at a golf course so he's very active didn't want to take the Goodies with him so he left them here with his overweight mom to be tempted. Dad can eat them and not gain a pound. I have told him for 26 years of marriage that I wish he could be overweight for JUST ONE DAY. I kept my weight down pretty much until the spinal cord injury and it has just exploded and imploded since then. But today is a new day.

Hi Linda - It must be really tough when you have children around and you do not want to deprive them of Goodies but I am sure you can do this. Just the fact that you have joined Sparkpeople and got this far proves you are serious. Just think how great you will feel when you get into bed at night knowing that the Goodies are there in your house but you did not eat them. I do hope it goes well for you. Since I have been losing weight each week I feel so much stronger about eating well and logging everything (honest everything - good or bad) in the food log. I have found that if I am tempted I just think about how I would feel if I have to log this particular food in my log and most of the time I stop right there. Planning my whole day as far as food is concerned means for me that I then rarely even think about it. I write down in the morning my days food and so far have stuck to it. I think I will fall off the wagon if I do not lose weight one week! A friend of mine who was an alcoholic once told me that, in recovery, she used to think that the only thing that would make her reach her particular goal was not how many times she fell off the wagon but the fact that she always always got back on. Five years later she is still up there and I admire her so much for fighting her demons. Get back on the wagon I know you can.
Regards to you and good luck this week.

I don't know yet. I've been steadily gaining also. I did pretty well last week but over the weekend, fell off the wagon. It takes time to submit all the foods you eat for calorie count, etc. I've got to do better - perhaps we can encourage each other. We had a birthday party for my son yesterday and the cake and ice cream is still here so of course, my thinking is if I eat it, it will be gone and I won't be tempted. I've not indulged terribly today and hope to stay busy today so I avoid the kitchen. I hope you have a good day and will have will power. I have no energy either. I had a spinal cord injury several years ago and it has left me with no energy and too much pain.

Anyway, I desperately need to get rid of about 50 pounds.

Hi everyone - I joined about three weeks ago and was determined to log everything I ate. By doing this I have now found my way round and love the site. I find it very easy to use and I am certain I will lose the weight. I have lost 7 pounds to date and have not felt deprived. I am entering my own food rather than have a menu created for me and I try to plan the day ahead, enter the foods I am going to eat and then look at the nutrition guidlines to make sure I fall within these. If not I can make changes and this way keep within the guidelines pretty much all the time. I like the way you can group foods together. I have put the food I have for breakfast together and also lunch (a big salad) which I have most days (sad I know but true)and I can then enter these two meals with two selections. I am from the UK and there is nothing as good as this available here without a monthly fee of around $US16 so it has been quite a find for me.
As regards fitness I use a step counter every day and instead of walking 10,000 as suggested I try to do 70,000 each week. This means that if I have a more relaxing day I do not feel that it is a failure and if I have a good day (looking after my 2 year old grand daughter for instance)this makes up for it.
Wish you all well and I know that you all can do this with all the help from this site.

It's hard - I did ok this morning and until about an hour ago. I've eaten 2 fig neuton cookies - that's not on my diet but at least it's less than the 15 cookies at a time that I usually sent.

I am new to this group also. I'm 59, female and have been steadily gaining weight for about 10 years. I have back problems also so I've become very accustomed to doing very little; I can exercise on a limited basis; I've just been very lazy. I've got to do better.

Hi Margaret, WELCOME...

I'm not sure if there is a special diet to follow. Of course there are numerous foods that we have to avoid, limit or simple cut down. Are you currently exercising?

If not try Walk Away the Pounds with Leslie Sansone. Her videos are very easy to follow and you basically walk in place.

Also I am a firm believe in the pedometer to track the number of steps that you take daily. You can find them in any store. They range in style and price.

This site is fantastic and the people here are so friendly and such motivators. They are always willing to help out and are so positive that I am in awe of. You’ve come to the right place.

I wish you much luck with your achievements. Reach out; someone will be there to take your hand. Don’t worry about tomorrow. God will take care of tomorrow.

Today you made a difference…..

Welcome Ladies,

A good place to start is by tracking your nutrition and making it a priority to eat several servings or more of fresh fruit and vegetables, and include whole grains and healthy protein. If you have specific questions I would be happy to answer as best I can.
