Love long-cooking oatmeal? Hate stirring? Use your crockpot

My hubby loves the oatmeal that takes 40 minutes of constant stirring until it's cooked. (example is McCann's Steel Cut Oat Meal).

Now he can use a small crockpot, 4 cups cold water, 1 cup oats and set it on low just before going to sleep.

6 hours later, an entire pot of perfectly cooked oatmeal.

Kitchen Workout!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!

If you cook wearing your work out clothes; you'll be less likely to keep on tasting; therefore saving calories. Sounds silly and it may just be. But it works. lol
Plus it also may remind you to squeeze your booty muscles! emoticon

Buy chicken with bones -- then make soup with leftovers

I usually buy my chicken with the bones in -- whether it's chicken breasts, thighs or an entire roaster.
Then I toss any left over carcass in water to cook for about 4 hours. Delicious broth and occasionally pieces of meat as well that were just too difficult to pull off the bone.
If I only have a couple of bones, I freeze them until I have enough.

fats

well instead of making goodies with sugar or bad fats I use very little or add things like unsweetened applesauce, or bananas, coconut milk, whole wheat flour, nonfat milk if called for, nonfat cream cheese, etc. little tricks that help lower fat and sugar too.

The Weekly Purge

Once a week, I 'purge' the refrigerator, getting rid of all limp or wilted foods, wipe down the shelves and drawers; then I can see what we need to replenish and it helps me w/ my grocery list as well as menu plan for the week. (It only takes minutes)

USE BANANAS!!!!

Need a healthy, natural, sweet, and usable substitute for cooking? IN place of eggs or anything else unecessary? Go the Vegan route and use bananas. It only takes one, mush up your ingredients w/ your hands and it makes it fun!!!!

Lasagna without noodles

I blanch cabbage leaves and drain them and then use them in place of the pasta. It freezes beautifully and my husband and I hardly miss the pasta.

Extend splt pea soup with spinach and butternut squash

In addition to sauteed carrots, onions and garlic I added 4 cups of fresh spinach and 1 cup of cooked butternut squash to the 8 cups of water and 1 pound of dried split peas when I made soup. Once cooked, the immersion blender mixed everything into the familiar look of split pea soup. Doing this adds flavor, nutrients and some volume lowering the per serving calorie count. . I also added a splash of balsamic vinegar to finish the soup. Quite Yum
