I think the most important thing I learned and am still learning, is that it is what it is!! I have Diabetes. I can control my BS, but Diabetes doesn't disappear. It took me months to admit that. To help control it, I do aerobic walking, mild strength exercises, drink lots of water,& limit carbs.
If you are newly diagnosed or diagnosed as pre-diabetic don't wait until something goes wrong or your condition worsens be diligent NOW and you could be saving your life and at the very least improving the quality of it. Take care of YOU! Nobody else will.
An A1c is a measure of how well your diabetes is doing over a 3 month period. Get one. It is one of the best ways of determining if your meds, exercise, diet, etc are working
i also have diabetes but now off meds after a year of walking, drinking water, logging ALL my food intake and giving up white bread and potatoes. i have lost some weight,also! i now munch on veggies, fruit and i eat lots of yogurt and oatmeal!
This applies especially to those who are newly diagnosed, but also to the rest of us. It takes time to find the right amount/type(s) of meds, how many carbs to eat, how to deal with all of this life with diabetes. Be patient. Educate yourself (American Diabetes Association website/books, and dLife.
I have a 20 oz water bottle at work and one at home. I constantly fill them and drink at least 3 bottles while at work. then I drink out of the one at home when I eat my evening meal and take my evening meds. My Blood Sugar is lower when I drink more water.
When I needed 2 start Insulin after oral medications had quit working, my family doc referred me 2 an Endocrinologist. After being interviewed, almost interrogated, he gave me a couple of choices of how 2 manage my diabetes. 1 was a standard insulin control, the other was a "Strict Control". Strict
All the difference in the world for me. Meeting with a diabetes educator showed the ins and outs of having diabetes and how being proactive can be beneficial to your life in preventing many health and life threatening issues. Meeting with a nutritionist helped me start eating healthy w/a meal plan.
I hate vegetables, however since I have started eating greens regularly every morning (green smoothies) my bs has never been lower. I used to be in the 300s now its pretty consistently around 125-155. By filling up on green vegetables the carbs aren't even a concern.
