Delicious, fast, energy-boosting
,
and surprisingly nutritious, breakfast

Here's my go-to breakfast when I need some "get-up-and-go" in a hurry in the morning, energy that will last me a few hours. Don't judge this by the list of ingredients, just the taste and how great you feel!

In a blender, mix the following until smooth:
1/2 cup lowmilk
4 oz soft tofu
1 small banana
3 tbsps unsweetened cocoa powder
4 pkts splenda

Even if you hate tofu, you won't be able to tell it's in here, and it makes this SO healthy.

2 x 30 minutes or 60 minutes? Once you've started, just keep going!

I found that you burn MORE calories by exercising for 60 minutes in one shot than for two separate sessions of 30 minutes.
For me (and everyone is different) I burn approximately 200 calories in the first half hour, and *300* in the second! Yes, I burn half as much again by keeping going!
I can burn more calories by doing an hour today and taking tomorrow off than by doing 30 minutes each day. Or I could work out both days, and burn even more!
Remember, the first 15 minutes are the toughest!

Figure out what you are hungry for - it might not be food

Hunger isn't necessarily for food!

When I am tired, I am hungry for sleep.
When I am thirsty, I am hungry for liquids.
When I am feeling down, I'm hungry for support.
When I am feeling lonely, I'm hungry for people.

Don't eat food when you need friends, or fluids, or sleep!!! Recognize what your hunger actually is for, and satisfy it with what it is craving.

Ice cream rarely gives you extra sleep, quenches your thirst, or gives you a hug!

Give your body time to change

It takes time for the body to accept smaller portions and healthier food as "normal". However, until it does, eating this way will feel challenging. My own body took 3 months to reach the point when I just felt too full to finish what had previously been a "normal" helping.

This taking time for the body to adapt to a NEW normal of smaller portions and healthier food is a big part of why successful weightloss doesn't happen quickly. Be patient - your body IS changing!

Use Food Groupings on the Nutrition Tracker

This REALLY helps you save time if there are a few things you always eat together. I find this really helpful for breakfast when I have one of 5 things: 2 different smoothie combinations, cereal and milk, english muffin with cheese, or scrambled eggs, together with coffee (with the works...) It takes a little longer than simple inputting the first time, but then it is just 1 simple fast move after that. Saves an amazing amount of time, especially if you are using an app version of SP.

Couch to 5K - getting non-runners to run!

I've NEVER been a runner, not even as a teen. I'm not inactive though, but exercise has never seemed to have the magic effect it is supposed to on my body.

Then I discovered Couch to 5K (C25K). I downloaded some podcasts, and then invested $3 in an app (Get Running). 7 weeks of exercising 3 times a week (25-30 minutes), and I have progressed from gasping after 1 minute of running to being able to go for 30! The amount of calories burned is amazing, and my body looks much better already!

What's your goal? Dream small....

Looking at most SparkPages I see goals that are often so huge, so hard to attain, so far away. Personally, I started out here at 170lbs, and ideally need to lose about 30lbs to get to a healthy BMI. That's an IDEAL. Of course, I could dream and say that I'd love to get to 125 or 130, but I'm not even thinking about that 30 or 45lbs, just the next 5! I do what I need to do to reach that - eating, exercise - and rejoice when I get there! I've reached 2 goals so far, and feel like a winner!

Waiting around? Step right up!

If you find yourself waiting for someone or something for more than half a minute, use the time! Even if you're self-conscious, you can benefit from some secret exercise that no-one knows you're doing, unless they look closely. If I'm waiting somewhere, I try to find a step (stairs, doorway, curb etc) and quietly step up and down. It's amazing how the heart-rate jumps up, and you start to burn calories in a very short time! Hey, the train (or the kids) can be late and it's really OK....

Nothing tastes as good as feeling thin!

I heard this a few years ago, and it's SO true. I've recently lost a few pounds (though nowhere near enough) and the most DELICIOUS feeling is slipping my clothes on rather than squeezing into them. Remembering this phrase is key when you are faced with food that may or may not be "worth it".

Eat small organic apples - tastier and less calories

Most of the time in the stores you see big apples (2 per pound). If you compare the calorie load of a large apple with a small one (3 per pound), the difference is astonishing. Usually you just want one apple, and a small one will do. Where to find small apples? In the organic department - smaller and tastier, and healthier too. When you figure the difference in cost between a big regular apple and a small organic one, there's not much in it.
