No need for fancy equipment or a gym membership. Just get outside and start walking (or jogging) laps around your neighborhood or even up and down your driveway. Track your laps on "Map my Walk" and it will calculate your speed and distance. Those laps = miles in no time at all!
For 25+ years, I drank SEVERAL diet sodas daily... sometimes a full 64oz bottle! I have wanted to cut back or quit for years but have intense cravings. I finally told myself that I could have one but needed to drink 8 oz of water first. I couldn't believe it... by the time I drank the water I had forgotten about the soda! Intending to just cut back I actually was able to fully quit. Been over 3 weeks now. Yay!
I have to admit that I am addicted to Diet Soda. For years, I have regularly drank 2-4 cans a day.. sometimes more. For sure this isn't good for my body or my pocketbook. Since I can't quit cold turkey, I have told myself that I can have one only after I drink 8 oz of water first. It is working! The past two days I have only had one... If you have issues with soda you might want to give this strategy a try. Spark on!!
If you find yourself dreading exercise, consider taking a class at the gym. I found the energy of a group very motivating and love the music. Call or look at the class schedule on the gym's website and try out a class. You just may find it to be the boost you need!
I do a series of crunches, planks (front and side) tricep dips, step-ups and donkey kicks every evening. It only takes 10 minutes and the changes I have seen in my overall strength has really been noticeable. Don't discount the impact of just a few minutes of exercise... doing it consistently is what matters.
Every week I sign up for the Spark Virtual Races and post my time... either walking or running. If you walk (or run) at least a mile once a week you are eligible to post your time and collect a trophy! If you aren't doing this already be sure and check it out.
You know those pages of exercise cut-outs that are in the fitness magazines? I never really knew what to do with them but thought that using them would be great. I now clip them, hole punch and keep them on a metal ring that I bought at the office supply store. I just open the ring and add new ones to it every month. When I need ideas or help with proper form I can flip through the cards easily and locate just what I need!
One of the hardest things for me is to stay on a healthy eating plan while on the road traveling. I have found that if I buy a box of instant oatmeal that I can add a packet to a cup of hot water and it is quite satisfying. Paired with a fruit and walnut plate from McDonalds and it is a meal!
I tried out the method for cooking corn on the cob recommended by a friend... and boy is it a winner. You cook the corn in the microwave. Just put the corn in the microwave oven right in the husk and zap it for 4 minutes per cob. Take it out (use an oven mitt.. it will be HOT), cut off the end (where it was attached to the stalk) and then just shake the corn out of the husk. It will slide out without a problem and NO SILK attached. It was yummy too.. no fuss... no mess.
