Mastering the Buffet

When I know I am going to a buffet I don't tell myself, hey you are off to a Chinese Buffet tonight - or whatever kind it is, I think of one healthy meal I could eat there. Tonight I told myself, I'm off to have a delicious veggie laden Mongolian BBQ. It totally helped me to focus - that's what I ate and I loved it!

Stubborn Stains

Use shaving cream to remove stubborn stains. Smear it on and leave it for an hour or so, then scrub. My daughters wedding gown was a total mess after the wedding and I didn't think the hem would ever be clean, but I did this and it came out perfect! My son-in-law called me a miracle worker!

Coffee Grinds at Deordorizer

Freshly ground coffee is an excellent deodorizer. Try leaving it on a plate in the fridge or any area that smells badly - you will be amazed how it clears out the smell. It is very effective to leave in a car that has had milk spilled in it - believe me _ i know :) emoticon

Thinking Ahead

When I am in the kitchen preparing a meal I think ahead to the next meal and ask myself, "will I be eating this at home?" If the answer is no, then I go ahead and prepare the next meal to take with me - this makes it easy to take my lunch or dinner with me, and doesn't add alot to the prep. time. I work shift work, so this is a handy way to keep on track - try it, it's simple and effective!

Labeling meat

When I buy meat, I divide it up and freeze it. Before I put it in the freezer I write on a piece of freezer tape how much the meat weighs, and stick it on the package. Then, when I get it out of the freezer I know how much meat I am working with - it makes it easy to enter the right amount in my SPoints.

Celery storage

When you buy celery, try taking it out of the plastic bag, rinsing it, and replacing it putting the leafy end in first. That way you can pull the root end out an inch or two, cut off as many stalks as you need and slide the rest back to the bag easily.

Removing Ink Stains

If you get ink on clothing, soak the stain in whole milk or 1/2 n1/2 - yes, it needs the fat content - the ink will come out after an hour or so. True story! (I put the milk in a saucer, and drape the stained part in it so that the entire garment does not have to be soaked in milk!)

Do I Keep this Outfit?

Sometimes an outfit stays in my closet for a long time because I can't decide if I still like it or not, so I have adopted a new method. Now, if I can't decide I wear the item(s) at the next available opportunity, and ask myself how I feel wearing it. If I don't love the way I feel , it goes straight in my donate box.

Using tap water

If you don't like the taste of your tap water try this. Pour some into an open container and place it in the fridge. In an hour or two a lot of chemicals will evaporate out of it, leaving better tasting cold water ready to drink. I put my water in Starbucks cups (the ones with straws) with the lid off, then screw on the lid and off I go - I have three large cups that I rotate - one for morning, one for afternoon and one for evening - that's 9 cups of water ready to go and easy to monitor.

Brown Rice Transition

I wanted to transition to brown rice but no one liked it, so I started mixing a quarter brown to three quarters white. No one complained. A few weeks later I went to half in half, and then three quarters to one quarter. Now we eat plain brown rice and no one has complained and honestly I can hardly tell the difference.
