Planning ahead is critical for me! From planning meals before going to the grocery store, keeping healthy snacks and meals on hand, making my lunch the night before, or reviewing a menu before eating out - it's all about making a plan and sticking to it!
I have never been a huge coffee drinker, but every once in awhile I like a good coffee based drink. Instead of spending $3-$5 at either Starbucks, McDonalds, or others, Target sells a variety of low cal, low fat latte drinks. Similar to the Starbucks drinks you can buy at the store, but a little more affordable. It's around $1.25 per drink, but it settles my craving and saves me some cash.
I am just not one of those people who is ever going to enjoy going to the gym and working out on a regular basis. Therefore, I try to incorporate exercise through fun activities, such as hiking, biking, canoeing, etc. or useful activities, such as housework & yardwork. It just makes my life much more enjoyable :)
January 1st, my husband and I truly got serious about leading a healthier lifestyle. Instead of having a "target" weight or deadline, we decided we wanted to make healthy changes to impact our lives as a whole. Looking at life this way has allowed us to make good choices most of the time, and not beat ourselves up if we miss a step a time or two
My husband and I have used Fat Free Promise Butter for years. It only has 5 calories per 2 tablespoons, and 0 fat. We use it on toast, grilled cheese sandwiches, and even in many recipes. Unfortunately, it doesn't do very well in pastries, cakes, cookies, etc. due to it's high water content. It gives us a little flavor, minus the calories/fat. We love it.
It's not always fun, but it is wise to live below your means. When you start looking at what you truly need vs. want in life, I promise you will find that you don't need the premium cable package, the designer clothes/accessories, the luxury vehicle, the latest technology, or even the daily Starbucks run. My generation especially seems to have an "entitlement" complex, which isn't reality. Be honest with yourself, find your inner peace, and it will provide for a much happier future.
Before I started counting calories, I ate cereal like crazy! One thing I learned - no matter what kind of cereal you get, you typically receive very little nutrition. However, I recently discovered Archer Farms High Protein Cinnamon cereal. It has 180 calories per 3/4 cup, yet 15 grams of protein! The most I have found in a cereal. And it's darn tasty.
When I am really wanting a certain type of unhealthy meal, I google healthier versions of the meal, or see what I can substitute to make it something I can eat. Of course, I LOVE sparkrecipes.com, but I also keep an eye out while reading my Health magazine. You can pretty much eat anything with special attention to the details!
I know that not everyone likes or needs credit cards, yet having a Target credit card allows me to save 5% on every purchase, large or small. I really appreciate that the 5% is taken off during the initial purchase, versus sending out points, rewards cards, etc. The key to having any type of credit card is paying it off in FULL - monthly! I never accrue interest, and I save some money on every day items.
