Dr. Beck's book, The Beck Diet Solution, subtitled train your brain to think like a thin person, has over 40 great activities to change your relationship with food. I'm just getting started but already feel more in control of my eating.
When I'm on the elliptical, treadmill, or stationary bike I keep a bottle of water with me to swig as I go. I find that when I'm warming up and cooling down I can just drink it straight from the bottle like I would if I wasn't exercising. However, when I pick up the speed I have to be a little more careful not to choke. I squeeze the water into my mouth, set the bottle down, and then swallow carefully. I do not have to slow down to drink and I don't choke!!
When cooking for extended family, take the time to calculate what you need so you don't end up with lots of extra fattening ingredients on hand you don't need.
RoBarr is a tasty calorie-free, caffeine-free, and acid-free hot drink. RoBarr is roasted barley that is brewed or perked just like coffee. I find that unlike tea or coffee, I can enjoy original RoBarr absolutely plain, so it is really helping me kick my overuse of artificial sweeteners. Sometimes it is really hard to get back on track. I set a goal to lose two pounds in October and two pounds in November. I planned to lose, but I gained about half a pound. Instead of giving up, like I would have in the past, I just kept trying. I just had a nice loss, or as some of my good SparkFriends call it, a release of weight this month.
For the past two years I have used my bookmarks as a visual clue, somewhat like Chris Downie used his vision collage. I put my completed 2009 bookmark with monthly stars on my bedroom mirror and my 2010 bookmark with its stars-to-date on my refrigerator as frequent reminders of my maintenance goal.
As an overweight teen I thought I was eating three times the amount of food I should have been. I thought I'd have to starve to be a normal weight. In reality, I was just overeating a little each day. I finally realized it was rather a small amount of food each day causing me great distress. When you add a little more activity it is even easier! Since that realization, losing weight and keeping it off has not been nearly as difficult.
I was absolutely intimidated to go to the gym, fearing that it was full of jocks who would just laugh at an old woman. I waited until I lost the weight and did four months of SparkPeople strength training before I got the nerve to join. I should have joined earlier! I found that people are focused on their own efforts, that there are other people like me, and the only people who don't fit in are those who are rude!
You've probably already heard that a reasonable serving of food looks like more on a small plate or in a small bowl. It's true. To take it a step further, make it a really special, attractive plate or bowl, and your food will look even more appetizing. A little presentation flare will help you feel not deprived, but worthy of delicious healthy fare.
