....to lose OR maintain weight. When I went on a "diet," I could go to extremes, and when I reached goal weight, I was "done." So I "stopped." Lather, rinse, repeat. Now, if there's anything I do that I think, "Oh, I can't keep doing this" (eat so little, eat certain foods, not eat certain foods), I stop and regroup. And recommit, or make a change.
I took a dance class on a whim in my early forties and ten years later perform flamenco regularly. I picked something I loved that involved a lot of activity, and "exercise" followed. And my life is so much richer for having passion in it.
