11 Active Vacation Ideas

Just because you're on vacation doesn't mean it's time to lie around. Get up, get out, and get moving! Here are 11 ways you can see the sites while working up a bit of a sweat.

Climb Every Mountain

Boost your adrenaline level by going mountain climbing! There are many companies that offer climbing education, so you can learn as you go. There’s a climbing adventure for everyone, even if you’re an absolute beginner.

A River Runs Through It

If you’d like to be close to the water without hitting the beach, then whitewater rafting or kayaking is sure to get your heart pumping. Most companies offer half-day trips, as well as full day and overnight trips for those looking for the most exhilaration possible.

Cycling for Excitement

Taking part in a cycling tour is a challenging way to catch the sites while enjoying the company of the rest of your group. Biking gets your heart rate up and lets you enjoy a region's beauty along the way.

Sail Away

Hit the water and take a lesson in sailing. More than just steering a boat, you'll learn to tie knots, manage the sails – and work up quite a sweat in the process.

Walk This Way

Walking tours are excellent ways to discover the most beautiful places in the world. Besides burning hundreds of calories a day, you will immerse yourself in local culture and come home with memories (and photos) to last a lifetime.

Dive In

Snorkeling is a great way to get up close and personal with magnificent sea creatures while getting in some exercise. Whether you're scuba diving in deep water or snorkeling along a sandbar, there's plenty to see while you swim.

A Whale of a Time

Want to get up close and personal with a whale? You can, with a sea kayak adventure where you'll paddle along with the whales, become an explorer, and soak up a little history while you exercise.

Get Active with Social Activism

Some people prefer to spend their down time helping others. There are many charitable organizations that need volunteers. Swinging a hammer or digging a ditch for others will warm your heart as well as give it a good workout.

Surf's Up

Surfing lessons can be had at practically any beach. Learn how to paddle out, and test your core strength by trying to stand up on a board. Surfing might seem challenging, and it can be, but it's also a great total body workout.

Hit the Slopes

Whether you're a daredevil heading for the black diamond slopes or sticking to the bunny trails, it's easy to find an affordable ski vacation. Not keen on steep slopes? Cross-country skiing over flat terrain is great exercise. Or try snowboarding for a great core and lower body workout.

Take a Hike

If you enjoy walking but want to try something more intense, hiking is the way to go. Some of the most beautiful parts of the world are right here in your own backyard.

Hiking is probably my favorite on vacation and even in hometown.

If 55+, try the ElderHostel travel programs (road scholar.org); international and domestic learning adventures that includes classes on the culture being visited, lodging, meals, and tips, with people who are older but not old; costs are less expensive and many adventures include airfare. I'm taking a ferry to Alaska up the Alaskan Passage in April that leaves from ferry terminal 50 miles from my home in northern Washington State for a week.

We can't afford most places mentioned but for our family a vacation is camping, during which we hike, swim, and fish. The entire family loves it. Another vacation I would like to take is going to Arkansas's Crater of Diamond Park. We plan to camp in a teepee and climb over rows to dig for the chance to find real diamonds. My "Wildbunch" loves to dig in the dirt anyway, lol.

To marvalousmujer... I love that you said God is on your side! That is so true, without Him on our side we are fighting a losing battle! It's like walking up hill in a snowstorm against the wind in the dark without Him!

Active vacations are the best! I always lose weight while I'm on vacation because I walk and swim so much. Last time I tried kayaking - a lot of fun. This time I want to add riding a bike, which I haven't done in years.. Sanibel/Captiva is a great place for an active vacation. ( :

I admit I stopped at 6 out of 12 ideas. I have balance issues so a lot of these might just get me killed! Any other ideas?

I started reading this thinking that it wouldn't include anything I could do, because I have severe arthritis in my knees. I was pleasantly surprised that I could do at least a couple of these. Thanks for reminding me that I can find ways to be active.

Today I took a walk to the park and return in a lot of pain, but in a way it was worth it. I needed to know if I could go that far (5 block). I will cut back and gradually get up to 5 blocks with not pain. God is on myside!
