SparkPeople: A (5-Minute) History

This short video clip from Fox News Chicago does a great job sharing a brief history of SparkPeople. Our Founder, Chris "SparkGuy" Downie, reached his own goals by co-founding eBay's leading competitor and selling that company to eBay as their first acquisition.

Chris first developed the SparkPeople program to overcome his own social anxiety. A co-worker named Pat then used the same program and lost 50 pounds, which changed his life. Pat then went on to start a walking group and motivate many people. Seeing Pat's transformation made Chris understand that our daily actions and words impact more people than we realize.

Chris then decided to start a new company with the mission to SPARK millions of PEOPLE to reach their goals using health and fitness as a springboard to reach milestones in all areas of life (yes, this is where our name came from). Now, Chris considers himself to be just a small part of the SparkPeople team--and that team includes our millions of members supporting each other to reach goals.

Our team loves seeing real people reaching life-changing goals on the site every day--like those featured in this video. Thanks for your support, and have fun reaching your goals!

  • Thank you so much for your efforts Chris. I am new to the site but with Gods help, commentmenr and all the wonderful tools you have provided on Dpark people, there is only one way to fail at reaching my goal. That's to give up which I am praying I don't do. I look forward to exploring all the articles, videos and more! - 9/1/2015 6:09:54 PM
  • Thank you Chris for your outstanding act of kindness !! There are angels here on earth and you are one of them. - 8/31/2015 8:02:30 AM
  • Kudos to creator of this FREE weight-loss online page. It took me a year to lose almost forty pounds due to my Polio disability. What I had found helpful were the ease of inputting foods consumed and ability to print personal Records to aid with future meals and present to doctor. Extra plus was the availability of Nutritional Guides for food items. It did, however, become tiresome to keep inputting each food item on a daily basis. To help maintain my weight loss, I have continued to weigh my foods and employ the Start Page's Goal Board.Thank you. eek - 8/28/2015 8:32:32 AM
  • I just found this site and as I went through the pages (more to go), I kept waiting for the price tag. I'm 64, on a fixed income, so I' extremely cautious about where the pennies are going to. I never found anything about money! This video finally convinced me that this is truly a free site/program! You're wonderful! I feel like I just might be able to lose the 100+ pounds I need to get rid of for health reasons and for my own vanity! I still remember all the activities that I've had to put aside because of health but instead of finding replacements, I sat on the couch feeling sorry for myself. Thank you for also introducing me to so many others up against the same issues. - 8/26/2015 2:43:04 AM
  • I had a gastric bypass 20 years ago and kept the weight off until this last winter when I went on a "devil may care" binge of potato chips, pizza, pop, and taco bell food and freezes and gain weight, and I haven't been able to take it off. We've moved to a new state, I trying to make new friends (I'm 64) and I need support and this site looks like a good place to start so I joined it today. - 8/23/2015 4:56:01 PM
  • I had gastric bypass surgery in March 2011 and have never gotten down to the 145lbs that I wanted as my goal, in fact, I am up to 183 lbs today. I saw a lady on Facebook who posted about losing 50 lbs so I said Okay, let's try this. I am starting in the morning 23 August 2015 and look forward to seeing how this program works over the many (all) the others. I just want to say a BIG THANK YOU to the creator of this program for giving it to us for FREE! I am very great at advertising about things that work for me and will do my best to work this program so I can promote it! - 8/22/2015 9:36:51 PM
  • I actually thought the intro with folks walking into what looked like a dungeon was about SparkPeople! (It was an ad for Hotels dot com.)

Thinking of giving this a try. - 8/21/2015 3:13:45 PM
